9 Saving QuickTime Files You can import a single MXF file, or multiple MXF files. If you select more than one file to import, MXF Import displays a modified save as dialog to provide save options. Saving a Single QuickTime File When you select a single MXF file and click Open, MXF Import displays the Save converted file as dialog. Provide a name and select a destination folder. Click Save to convert the file to QuickTime and save the file. Accept the current name (same as the imported file) or edit it, then select the destination folder and click Save. MXF Import saves the file as QuickTime (without media conversion), and automatically adds it to the project list. The suffix.mov is supplied by default you do not have to supply the suffix. Saving Multiple QuickTime Files When you select multiple MXF files and click Open, MXF Import displays the Save converted file as dialog with two options near the bottom, to make saving multiple files easier. Provide a base name and optional sequence number. Select a destination folder. Optionally, check Auto-rename and auto-renumber. Click Save to save each file. Before you save files, determine how you want them named. Automatically rename each file. If unchecked, you manually supply the destination file name for each file you selected. Check this option to have MXF Import save each converted file as a.mov file in the selected directory, using a file-naming convention. This option permits you to click Save one time and convert and save each selected file without further intervention. Flip4Mac MXF Import Component Version 1.0 User Guide Page 7

10 In the Save as field, enter the base name and sequence number (basename001, for example) you want to use for the first file, and as a template for the remaining files to be converted. For subsequent source files, MXF Import uses the base name (basename, in this example) you provided for the remaining files. For each file it converts and saves, MXF appends the base name you supply with the number from the source file. The number of digits in this number matches the number of digits you supply in the template in this example, 001, which is 3 digits long. If the base name you supply has no trailing numbers, the minimal number of digits for the sequence is used. If you supply a sequence number, the number of digits you supply is used. (MXF Import add digits if necessary due to the number of files.) If the destination file name you supply does not match the numbering convention of the first file, you must manually supply the destination file name for each file you save. Number files sequentially. You can only check Number files sequentially when you have already checked Automatically rename each file. Check to have MXF Import save each converted file using the base file name you supply, plus a four-digit, ascending numeric sequence beginning with the value If you do not change the original destination file name (which is the name of the first source file), each file name is created by using the base name of the first source file, and the sequence number, including files whose names are different from the first source file. Source file names are always sorted alpha-numerically in ascending order before encoding and saving them using these file-naming conventions. The suffix.mov is supplied by default you do not have to supply the suffix. Click Save one time and convert and save each selected file without further intervention. 11 Networking Sony Devices You can connect your Macintosh to Sony XDCAM devices or e-vtr decks in several ways. Each connection is actually a network connection, via Ethernet cable and optional network gear. In this section, you ll learn about: Typical Ethernet LAN connection schemes and how to connect Ethernet cables, auto-sensing ports, and basic cabling requirements Setting up a direct connect LAN Connecting via hub Connecting to an Existing Network Setting up Networking on Sony XDCAM PDW-1500 Setting up Networking on Sony e-vtr Setting up Networking on Sony PXDCAM PDW-530 / 530P Note: Sony publishes operation manuals for each of it s products, and you should refer to them for all operations regarding Sony equipment. The networking information provided here is for your convenience only, and should not be relied upon as the final authority. Typical Ethernet LAN Connections Computers and network-capable Sony products can connect via a LAN in three typical ways. In the figure below, each is illustrated: direct connect using a single cable, without intervening network gear or hooking to a corporate network. This method is handy when you re on the road or other location away from an existing network, or connecting to a LAN requires assistance from an IT person on network administrator. Direct Ethernet Connection Corporate LAN Connection Ethernet Connection via Hub Flip4Mac MXF Import Component Version 1.0 User Guide Page 9

12 Ethernet Cabling Ethernet cabling is not universally interchangeable. Cables you use to connect to network gear are straightthrough cables. However, you can connect two computers (or a computer and a network-capable camera or deck) directly without network gear but you often need a special Ethernet cable called a cross-over cable. To eliminate cross-over cables, some Macintosh models and network gear have auto-sensing ports. These ports test the connection when you plug the cable in. If the connection fails, the port re-tests for a cross-over cable. When connecting a computer to network gear, use straight-through cables. When connecting computers, XDCAM devices, e-vtrs, and other network-capable end-user devices (with Ethernet ports) to each other directly, use a cross-over cable unless you re sure that one of the devices has an auto-sensing port. Setting Up a Direct Connect LAN You can connect your Macintosh directly to a Sony device without any network gear. You ll need a cross-over Ethernet cable, or you can use a straight-through cable if the Macintosh has an auto-sensing LAN port. To direct-connect your Macintosh to a Sony device, follow these steps: 1. Determine the IP address of your Macintosh and verify that the subnet mask is Determine the IP address of your Sony device and verify that the subnet mask is Change either the Macintosh or Sony device IP address so that both are in the same subnet, meaning that the first 3 sets of numbers (octets) are identical (and in the range 1 to 255), and the last octet is unique on the Macintosh and device, within the range 1 to 255. For example, Macintosh: , and Sony device: Both have the same subnet mask: Connect your Macintosh to the device with a cross-over cable (unless you determine that the Macintosh has an auto-sensing port). Make sure both the Macintosh and device are powered on. 5. Test the connection by running Network Utility application (Applications > Utilities). Click the Ping panel, enter the IP address of the device you re connected to and click Ping. If you get a response, you re connected! Connecting via Hub You can connect your Macintosh to one or more Sony devices in a hub arrangement. You ll need an Ethernet hub and an Ethernet cable for each device. To direct-connect your Macintosh to one or more Sony devices via a hub, follow these steps: 1. Determine the IP address of your Macintosh and verify that the subnet mask is Determine the IP address of your Sony device (each device if more than one) and verify that the subnet mask is Change the Macintosh and each Sony device IP address so that all are in the same subnet, meaning that the first 3 sets of numbers (octets) are identical (and in the range 1 to 255), and the last octet is unique on the Macintosh and device, within the range 1 to 255. For example, Macintosh: , and Sony device number 1: , and Sony device number 2: The Macintosh and all devices must have the same subnet mask: Plug in and turn on your hub. Next, connect your Macintosh and each Sony device to the hub, avoiding the uplink port (usually the first or last, and noted). Power the Macintosh and all Sony devices on. 5. Test the connection by running Network Utility application (Applications > Utilities). Click the Ping panel, enter the IP address of each device on the network and click Ping. If you get a response, you re connected! Flip4Mac MXF Import Component Version 1.0 User Guide Page 10

13 Connecting to an Existing Network You can connect your Macintosh to one or more Sony devices on an existing LAN. You ll need a networkconnected Ethernet cable for each device. Before connecting, make sure you have permission from the IT department or network administrator, and you know what IP address you can use. Some network administrators require that all devices use DHCP. If you enable DHCP on your XDCAM, make sure you are connected before enabling it. If you are setting the IP address manually, connect after setting the IP address. If you enable DHCP, you need to view the IP address currently assigned before connecting, because the IP address can change over time. To connect your Macintosh to one or more Sony devices on an existing network, follow these steps: 1. Ask the network administrator if DHCP is available. If so, set up your Macintosh to use DHCP. If not, change the IP settings of the Macintosh to the IP address, subnet, and gateway address supplied by the network administrator. 2. Update the IP address and subnet mask of your Sony device (each device if more than one), per the requirements of the network administrator (DHCP or a specific IP address and subnet). 3. Make sure your Macintosh each Sony device are connected to the network. and the Macintosh and all Sony devices are powered on. 4. Test the connection by running Network Utility application (Applications > Utilities). Click the Ping panel, enter the IP address of each device on the network and click Ping. If you get a response, you re connected! Setting up Networking on Sony XDCAM PDW-1500 The Sony XDCAM PDW-1500 provides the username admin, which can not be changed. The default password is pdw-1500, which can not be changed directly on the device. If you do not have media mounted in the device, you can not connect to the XDCAM via MXF Import. An error message is displayed which indicates that no media is mounted. Some network administrators require that all devices use DHCP. If you enable DHCP on your XDCAM, make sure you are connected before enabling it, and enter the default gateway address. If you are setting the IP address manually, connect after setting the IP address and subnet mask, disabling DHCP. If you enable DHCP, you need to view the IP address currently assigned before connecting, because the IP address can change over time. Expanded View of Display. 16 Troubleshooting Sony Networking Problems If you can t ping the device, check these potential causes: Verify that your IP address on the Macintosh and the target Sony device are identical for the first 3 sets of numbers (called octets), and the last octet is unique for each computer and Sony device. All octets must be in the range of 1 to 255. The subnet mask should be class C set to Other subnet mask settings are permitted, but should be directed by a network administrator. Verify that the cable you are using for a direct connection is a cross-over Ethernet cable, unless your Macintosh has an auto-sensing port. Test the cable in a known good environment. Make sure the Sony e-vtr is turned on and the Access switch is set to Network. If using a hub, make sure the hub is on and operational, and each connected port s link light is lighted. If connecting via corporate network, make sure the cables are connected to the network gear. Test your Macintosh s connectivity by displaying a Web page.
