Creating an imovie project Launch the app, choose projects at the top and tap on the + icon at the top right of the screen to begin a new project. You can choose either to make a movie or a trailer. First choose a theme. Be aware the theme will pre-populate transitions, music, title styles and more. You are able to alter this theme during the project editing process. When you ve chosen your theme, click create in the top right corner. You ll be taken to the Project editing screen. Adjust Project Settings Tap on the settings icon to set your preferences for the imovie project. Preferences include adding filters or themes to the full project, as well as overall settings like fade in/out, and a speed setting.
Adding Media to Your Project When you start a new project the project screen will appear and you can begin importing video, audio and images into your project. This is done using the top right corner window. You can also begin recording video and audio if you wish. This is done through the bottom right corner menu. Add Video Tap on the video tab to add video to your project timeline. Video clips or files that are saved in the camera roll on your Photos app, or as imovie media in the Photos app or icloud will appear here. Add Images Tap on the Photos tab to add photographs and images saved to your Photos app. You can select images located in the Camera roll, Photo Library and individual events. Add Audio Selecting the audio icon will allow you to add Theme Music and Sound Effects that are included with the imovie app. You can also add audio clips and music tracks saved to your Music app on the ipad. Be careful of licensing!
Adding and editing video When you select a video clip, a yellow border will appear. Two icons will appear just below the clip, as well as an ellipses. The second icon, the playback button, will allow you to preview the clip. The first icon, the arrow, will add your clip to the project wherever your playback point line is currently located (that s the big white line in the timeline area). If you tap and select the clip in the timeline, it will again be highlighted with a yellow border. Tap and drag on the yellow bars at each end of the clip to edit its duration.
Editing video in the timeline When a clip is selected in the timeline (highlighted in yellow), the left -hand menu at the bottom of the screen will allow you to further edit that specific clip. Choosing each icon will cause the right -hand menu to populate with different options. Scissors split the video (wherever the big white line is currently located), detach the audio from the playhead (to remove audio from clips you don t want to have audio), duplicate the clip and delete it. Timer Speed up or slow down the clip, as well as freeze it. Volume Change the volume on the audio for that particular clip. T add titles and lower thirds to the clip. Colors add a filter just to that clip. Easy Shortcuts Split a clip select the clip and then swipe down with your finger at the playback point line. Freeze a clip select the clip and then swipe up with your finger at the playback point line. The clip will be frozen for a second on the timeline. Rotate a clip Select the clip. In the large playback screen (top right corner of screen), use two fingers to touch and rotate the clip.
Editing Transitions Each time you add a clip to a project a transition will be created between each clip. You can edit the transition if you wish by tapping on its icon. A new window pops up at the bottom of the screen that will give you several transition options. Want to fine tune the transition? Click on the transition and set of arrows will appear directly below the transition. Click those, and the timeline will expand. From here you can adjust the exact points in the video project where the adjacent clips start and end the transition. Looking for help? Click the big question mark at the top of the screen an overlay of helpful hints will appear. As you click different things (clips, transitions, etc.), those hints will change. If you still haven t figured it out, click the Learn More at the bottom of the screen and it will take you to online imovie help.
Adding a Picture in a Picture and Other Cool Additions You can easily switch from your talking head to b-roll, or add a picture in a picture with the imovie app. Add your first video clip to the timeline, then make sure it s selected (yellow highlight), and make sure the playback point line is located where you want to add the new video clip. Select your second video clip in the top left menu. Click on the ellipses that appears in the drop-down menu. From there you can choose how to add the clip in: Waveform add the audio only. Full Picture add the video as a cut-away (replaces old video, but not audio) PNP add video as a picture-inpicture. Half Picture add the video as a split-screen. Once the video has been added, if you select the second video clip, you can adjust the settings using the bottom menus.
The Ken Burns Effect First add your photo to the timeline (you do this the same way you add video), then make sure the photo is selected in the timeline (yellow highlight). Select the top arrow this will allow you to set where the photo starts the movement. Pinch the photo with two fingers to zoom in and out and pan side to side. Select the bottom arrow this will allow you to set the end position of the photo. Pinch the photo with two fingers to zoom in and out and pan side to side. When you re finished, tap the square box, that will maintain your settings.
Working With Audio Each video clip has its own audio track. At left, the first clip has its audio track switched off. The second clip has an audio track that is switched on. Its waveform is visible beneath the clip. If you leave the audio track on a video clip switched on it will be heard over the background music track. The background track will be automatically reduced in volume while the specific audio clip is playing. This is known as ducking. If you have detached your audio and added background music, you ll have two separate audio components. Above, you ll see there s three, as I ve added in applause as a sound eff ect. The green back ground color with its light green audio waveform represents the back ground audio loop.
Tapping on an audio clip will allow you to adjust its volume or even to delete the clip. And you can f ind all different types of theme music, sound effects and more in the Audio window. Editing the transition point of two separate audio clips Make sure the audio track icon is displayed by tapping the audio icon above the timeline. Choose the audio track you want to work on. At the bottom, make sure the audio button is selected, and choose Fade from the right-hand menu. A yellow box will appear. If you wish to fine-tune the fade, drag the arrow at the start and end of the box. You ll see a fade appear in the waveform.
Exporting your completed project Select the share icon. From here you can save it to multiple sources, including Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, and text messages. You can also save your project to the Camera Roll within this Photos app on your ipad, or use the cloud or airdrop to save it to your desktop. Finishing up When you ve completed your project, select the arrow in the top of the screen. This will take you back to projects. Your most current project will appear automatically. You can adjust the title here, as well as play/preview the video, export it, delete it, or choose to continue to edit it.
