4 Introduc on This booklet, Developing Podcasts with the PC - Level 3, will guide you through the steps to develop a podcast using your PC. The instructions in this booklet explain how to incorporate graphics and video into your podcast. Learning objec ves The learning objectives in this document include: Understanding how to import video from a Flip camera to the computer. Having the ability to create a new collection in Movie Maker. Being able to import various elements into the collection. Being able to place various elements on the timeline. Having the ability to adjust the timeline. Understanding how to add text and narration to the project. Having the ability to save the project and convert the file into a useful format. 4

5 The Movie Maker So ware Movie Maker is included with the Windows operating system. This software package is perfect for including video and graphics in your podcasts. Impor ng Video to the Computer from a Flip Camera Audio Visual Technology Services has Flip cameras available for check-out for all KSU faculty, staff, and students. These cameras can be checked-out from this department, which is located on the first floor of the Pilcher Building. Impor ng the Video The following steps explain how to import video from a Flip Camera to Movie Maker: 1. On one side of the Flip camera you will find the power button. On the other side of the camera, you will find a USB connector (this connector will flip out). 2. Attach this USB connector to a USB port on your computer. 3. A window will appear on your screen showing the various videos located on the camera (see Figure 1). Figure 1 - Flip Camera Options 4. To save a particular video to your computer, point to the video with your mouse pointer and left-click once. This will select the video by placing a blue-selection box around the video. 5

6 5. At the bottom of the window, click the button Save to computer (see Figure 2). Figure 2 - Flip Camera Options 6. A window will appear indicating to what folder on your computer the video will be saved. This folder will appear on the left-side of the window under Computer. Click the Yes button to proceed. 7 7. Under the Computer category, click the folder where the video was saved (see Figure 4). You will see the video displayed in the main window. Figure 4 - Flip Camera Options 8. Place your mouse pointer over the video that you want to save to your computer and right-click. In the menu that appears, click Export to. 9. In the next window that appears, select the location on your hard drive where the video will be saved and then click OK. 10. The video will be saved to the designated location. Conver ng the Video Once the video is located on your hard drive, you will want to import this video into Movie Maker. However, Movie Maker will not import the format of the video from the Flip camera. The following instructions explain how to convert the video into a format that Movie Maker will accept. Please use the Internet Explorer browser when going through these instructions to precisely follow the steps below. 1. Go to the following website: 2. Click the Downloads tab. 3. Type the following into the search box and click the search button: Pazera converter 4. Press the Search button (this button may be labeled with a magnifying glass icon). 5. The software should appear in a list in your browser window. Press the Download Now button located to the right of the name of the software in the list. 7

The File Download window will appear (if your computer doesn t accept pop-up windows, right-click the yellow bar near the top of the browser window and allow the File Download window to open). 7. Press the Save button. 8. In the next window that appears, determine where the file will be saved and press Save. 9. This folder will be saved with the name Pazera_Free_MP4_to_AVI_converter. Find this folder on your computer. 10. When you find the folder, allow the mouse pointer to hover over this folder and right-click once. In the menu that appears, click Extract All. Follow the on-screen instructions until all of the files have been successfully extracted. 11. A new folder named Pazera_Free_MP4_to_AVI_converter will be placed on your computer. Double-click this folder so that it opens (when it opens, the contents of the window should match the contents in Figure 5). 12. Click the mp4toavi icon to open the software (see Figure 5). 9 13. The Pazera software will open on your screen and appear as Figure 6. Figure 6 - Pazera Software 14. Press the Add files button to add your video file (see Figure 7). Figure 7 - Pazera Software 15. In the Open window that appears, locate the video file, select it, and click the Open button. 9

10 16. Next, click the Convert button (see Figure 8). Figure 8 - Pazera Software 17. The Conversion window will open indicating the processing status. When the conversion is complete, a Close button will appear in the lower-right area of the window. Click this button to close the window. 18. The converted file will appear in the same folder with the original file. The extension of the converted file is.avi (this is a format that Movie Maker will accept). 10

11 Crea ng a New Collec on in Movie Maker Collections are similar to folders; they help users organize videos, graphics, sound clips, etc. The following instructions explain how to create a new Collection in Movie Maker. 1. The Collections button will display and hide the Collections window (see Figure 9). Figure 9 - Collections 2. Right-click the Collections folder (see Figure 10). Figure 10 - Collections 3. In the window that appears, click New Collection. 4. Next, a new Collection icon will appear with the cursor resting in a text box. Type the name of the new collection in this text box (example: KSU) and then press the Enter key. 11

12 Impor ng Video, Graphics, and Sounds The following instructions explain how to import a file on your computer into Movie Maker. 1. Click to select the name of the Collection where the video will be imported. 2. Next, from the menu options at the top of the window, click File. 3. Then, click Import into Collections. 4. The Import File window will open on your screen. Select the file that you want to import and click Import. 5. The video will import into the selected Collections folder. IMPORTANT: Video files that import into Movie Maker include.avi,.mpg, and.mpeg. Movie Maker will not accept.mp4 files. In order to convert an.mp4 file into an.avi file so that it can be imported into Movie Maker, please see pages 7-10 of this document. Placing Video and Graphics on the Timeline The following instructions explain how to place video and graphics on the timeline: 1. Drag the video/graphic from collections to the Video layer of the timeline (see Figure 11). Collections Timeline Figure 11 - Movie Maker 12

13 Placing Sounds on the Timeline The following instructions explain how to place sounds on the timeline: 1. Drag the sound clip from collections to the timeline (see Figure 12). Collections Timeline Figure 12 - Movie Maker Adjus ng the Length of Items on the Timeline The following instructions explain how to adjust the length of items on the timeline: 1. Point and click once on the clip that you want to adjust. 2. Then, allow your mouse pointer to hover over the right-side of the selected clip so that it appears as a red double-arrow. 3. Hold down the right mouse button and adjust the size of the clip on the timeline. Spli ng a Clip on the Timeline The following instructions explain how to split a clip on the timeline: 1. Point and click once with your mouse the spot on the timeline where you would like to split the clip (see Figure 13). 2. From the menu options in the upper-left area of the screen, click Clip. 13

14 3. Then, click Split. 4. The clip will now split from one into two. You may decide to select one of the two clips and delete it from the timeline (see Figure 14). In this example, the video on the timeline would be split where selected. Figure 13 - Timeline In this example, the video from Figure 13 has been split. The selected clip will be deleted if the user presses the delete key on the keyboard. Figure 14 - Timeline Applying Special Effects to Photos on the Timeline Special effects can be applied to photos on the timeline. The following explains how to apply various special effects to graphics. Fade In and Fade Out The following explains how to apply Fade In and Fade Out special effects to photos on the timeline: 1. Right-click over the graphic in which the special effect will be applied. 2. In the menu that appears, click to select Fade In. 3. Right-click again over the same graphic. 4. In the menu that appears, click to select Fade Out. 14

15 Other Special Effects The following explains how to apply other special effects to graphics on the timeline: 1. Right-click over the graphic in which the special effect will be applied. 2. In the menu that appears, select Video Effects. 3. A window will appear on your screen (see Figure 15). Under the category Available effects, select the option of your choice. 4. Then, click the Add>> button. 5. The effect will now transfer from the Available effects window to the Displayed effects window. 6. Click OK. Right-click over the video in which the special effect will be applied. 2. In the menu that appears, select Video Effects. 3. A window will appear on your screen (see Figure 15 above). Under the category Available effects, select the option of your choice. 4. Then, click the Add>> button. 5. The effect will now transfer from the Available effects window to the Displayed effects window. 6. Click OK. 15

16 Adjus ng the Sound for a Video Clip on the Timeline The following explains how to adjust the sound for a video clip on the timeline: Mu ng the Sound To mute the sound for a video clip, follow the instructions below: 1. Right-click over the sound clip attached to the video clip (see Figure 16). 2. In the menu that appears, select Mute. The sound clip attached to the video clip. Figure 16 - Sound Clip Controlling the Volume To adjust the sound for a video clip, follow the instructions below: 1. Right-click over the sound clip attached to the video clip (see Figure 16). 2. In the menu that appears, select Volume. 3. The Audio Clip Volume window will appear. Adjust the volume for the video clip and click OK. Modifying a Sound Clip on the Timeline The following explains how to modify the sound for a movie clip on the timeline: Mu ng the Sound The following explains how to mute a sound clip on the timeline: 1. Right-click over the sound clip (see Figure 17). 2. Select Mute. To undo the mute so that you can hear the sound, right-click again over the sound clip. Then, 16

17 The sound clip Fade In and Fade Out The fade in and fade out feature in Movie Maker will enhance the sound quality of your presentations. The following explains how to apply this to your sound clips: 1. Right click over the sound clip (see Figure 17). 2. In the menu that appears, select Fade in. 3. Right click over the sound clip again. 4. In the menu that appears, select Fade out. Volume Control Figure 17 - Sound Clip To control the volume of your sound clips, follow the instructions below: 1. Right-click over the sound clip on the timeline (see Figure 17). 2. In the menu that appears, select Volume. 3. The Audio Clip Volume window will appear. Adjust the volume for the video clip and click OK. Crea ng an Audio Narra on Movie Maker allows you to record your voice as the video/graphics are displayed to the viewers. The following explains how to create an audio narration: 1. Attach a microphone to your computer. 2. Click the microphone icon just above the timeline (see Figure 18). Figure 18 - Narration 17

18 3. When you are ready to speak, press the Start Narration button (see Figure 19). Figure 19 - Narration 4. The video/graphics that your viewers will see will appear in the preview window (see Figure 20). You can provide a narration for the images that the viewers are seeing. 19 5. When you are finished recording, press the Stop Narration button (see Figure 21). Figure 21 Narration 6. A window will appear allowing you to save your narration. Type the name of the file and click the Save button. 7. The narration will appear on the Audio/Music layer of your timeline (see Figure 22). To return to the Collections view, press Done (see Figure 22). Figure 22 Narration 19

20 Crea ng Titles and Credits Titles and credits allow you to add text to your video. The text may be placed in the following locations of the video: Beginning of the Video Provide introductory text for the video. Middle of the Video Provide text in the middle of the video. For example, this text could be used to introduce a particular video clip or a series of graphics. End of the Video Provide credits at the end of the video. The following explains how to insert titles and credits into your presentation: 1. Click Tools in the upper-left area of the Movie Maker window. 2. Click Titles and Credits. 3. Next, you will see the text, Where do you want to add a title? Select the option of your choice (title at the beginning, credits at the end, etc.). 4. Then, you will see two windows where you can enter your text (see Figure 23). As you enter the text, you will see how the text will appear in the preview window. Placing the text in different areas of the window will place the text in different locations on the viewing screen of your audience. 21 5. Under More Options, you have the ability to change the title animation and the text font and color (see Figure 24). Figure 24 Titles and Credits 6. When you are done, click Done, add title to movie (see Figure 25). Figure 25 Titles and Credits 7. The title will be added to the timeline. You can control the amount of time that the title appears in the video by adjusting the size of the title on the timeline (see Figure 26). 21

22 Title Slide Figure 26 Titles and Credits Crea ng Title Overlays Title overlays allow you to place text on a graphic or video. The following explains how to add an overlay to your presentation: 1. Select the video or graphic where the overlay will appear. 2. Click Tools in the upper-left area of the Movie Maker window. 2. Click Titles and Credits. 3. Next, you will see the text, Where do you want to add a title? Select the following option: Title on the selected clip. 4. Then, you will see two windows where you can enter your text (see Figure 27). As you enter the text, you will see how the text will appear in the preview window. 23 5. Under More Options, you have the ability to change the title animation and the text font and color (see Figure 28). Figure 28 Title Overlays 6. When you are done, click Done, add title to movie (see Figure 29). Figure 29 Title Overlays 23

24 7. The title will be added to the timeline (see Figure 30). You can control the amount of time that the title appears in the video by adjusting the size of the title on the timeline. Title Overlay Figure 30 Title Overlays Saving the Project Movie Maker gives you the ability to save your video as a project file. When you do this, you have the ability to open the file later and edit the contents. The following explains how to save as a project: 1. Click File. 2. Click Save Project As. 3. In the window that appears, enter the location of the file and the file name. Saving the Movie File When you have finished the video and are ready to share it with others, you are ready to save the product as a movie file. The following instructions explain how to save as a movie file: 1. Click File. 2. Click Save Movie File. 3. In the next window that appears, select My Computer and then click Next. 4. Enter a file name and choose a place to save your movie file. Then, click Next. 5. For Movie Settings, accept the default and click Next. 6. The movie will save. This process may take a long time depending upon the length of the video and the amount of footage, sounds, graphics, etc. being processed. 24

25 Conver ng the File Your video will be saved as a.wmv file. There are only a few limited ways that you can share a.wmv file with others. It would be better to convert the file to a.mp4 format. The following explains how to do this conversion: Downloading the Videora So ware To convert the file, you will need the Videora software. The following explains how to install this software on your computer: 1. Open the Internet Explorer browser (the following instructions are written using Internet Explorer). 2. Got to the following website: 3. Under the Apple category, click Videora ipod Converter. 4. Next, click the Download Now button. If your browser doesn t allow pop-up windows, you will need to click the bar that appears near the top of the browser and give permission for the pop-up window to open (when you click on the bar, click Download File). 5. The File Download dialogue box will appear. In this window, click Run. 6. After the file has downloaded to your computer, the Videora ipod Converter 6 Setup window will appear on your screen. In this screen click Next. 7. Then, read the License Agreement and click I Agree. 8. At the next screen, click Next. 9. Again, at the next screen, click Next. 10. Finally, click Install (you do not need to install the Bing bar). 11. When done, click Finish. Conver ng the File The following explains how to convert your file from.wmv to.mp4: 1. Open the Videora ipod Converter software (you should see the icon for this software on your desktop). 2. A window will appear asking you to select your ipod model. Select the model labeled ipod 5th Gen - 30GB, 60GB, 80GB (see Figure 31). Figure 31 Videora Setup 25

26 3. If necessary, close the setup window. 4. The Videora ipod Converter window should now appear on your screen (see Figure 32). In this window, click Video File. 28 8. The Select Video to Convert window will appear on your screen. Locate and select the file that you want to convert on your computer and then click the Open button. 9. In the next window, select the output location (example: desktop) and then click Next (see Figure 36). Figure 36 Videora ipod Converter 10. Enter a title for the movie and click Next (see Figure 37). 30 13. As the video converts, you may click on the Progress tab (see Figure 40) to see the status of the conversion. When the conversion is complete, Videora will place the file in the location that you selected in Step 9 on Page 28. Progress Tab Figure 40 Videora ipod Converter 30
