4 Automated Production Control Modern news bulletins call for ever more sophisticated on-screen acrobatics. Viewers expect to see a slick, dynamic visual presentation of video, graphics, and camera motion. Historically broadcasters have used large teams of well rehearsed operators to conjure up the magic using a control room full of equipment - dedicated Vision and Sound Mixers, CG, Video players, robotic cameras, and other devices. More recently Automated Production Control (APC) has brought all these devices under automation control to create slick, repeatable, pre-planned sequences with a much smaller team in the control room. The Sienna- integration builds on this idea, but brings all the control room elements into a single box, and delivers the complete APC experience to a new market at a price point an order of magnitude lower than ever before. Integration with Newsroom Computer Systems News bulletins are planned and constructed within a Newsroom Computer System (NCS) where producers and editors start the day with ideas, schedules and plans, and build up to a complete media-rich news bulletin. In the past, only the video objects from the bulletin have been directly integrated within the NCS, and control room instructions have been purely comments to prompt a human operator. Now, with Sienna- APC, the entire bulletin can be sequenced inside the NCS with control of all functions - Video playback, CGs, Vision and Sound mix, virtual set camera moves and more. The MOS rundown is sent and updated in real time from the NCS through Sienna OriginOne and is live in the Sienna AutomationX APC playlist. As stories and elements change in the NCS, so they are reflected in AutomationX in real-time, even whilst the show is on-air. AutomationX provides a list of every on-screen move and shake. All the single Sienna AutomationX operator needs to do is press NEXT, NEXT, NEXT and so on- and the magic of APC creates a stunning on air Seamless NLE Workflow delivery to rival a team of four or five manually controlling traditional equipment. Creating the media for the bulletin is a vital part of the everyday news process and the various Sienna components provide a seamless and powerful workflow for ingest and editorial staff. Media is ingested directly to shared storage with a proxy for every object, and can be edited whilst still being captured from live and external feeds. Sienna StoryCut presents the emerging MOS Rundown and stories to the NLE editors, so they can cut packages to fit news stories. One click media into the NLE and one click media publishing back to the MAM and NCS creates a fluid and error-free editorial workflow. In addition to this, Sienna allows editors to pre-synchronise lower 3rds directly on the NLE timeline, using markers. For each planned lower 3rd, the editor simply drops a special marker with the caption metadata. This not-only creates the captions automatically in the, but it *also* automates the timing - so that AutomationX can automatically present each lower 3rd, perfectly on cue with no need for the operator to do anything - the lower 3rds are timed off the start of the package IP Video Infrastructure playback, entirely automating the presentation. The broadcast industry is beginning to dream of an IP Video workflow - eliminating SDI throughout the media chain. This dream is realised to a large extent with the Sienna- integration with file based operations, single-media file operations with no media copying, direct playback of media by off the same central shared storage used for ingest and editorial.
