Custom Heart-Shaped Wipe This tutorial shows you how to create a custom wipe. You ll use the shape tools in the Matte effect to draw a heart shape, and then animate the shape to create the wipe between the two shots. Once you ve learned how to create a custom transition, you can use your imagination to create many others. 1 of 9
Capturing Media and Setting Up the Shot 1. Create a new sequence with the following settings: Video Format: NTSC D1 4/3 Resolution: Full/Uncompressed 2. Import the following media files using the capture settings shown here: Lovers.mov Cherub.mov 3. Drag the Lovers clip to the timeline and make it one second long. 4. Drag the Cherub clip to the timeline so that it is right beside the Lovers clip. 2 of 9
Applying the Transition 1. Select the edit point between the two clips and apply an Effects Tree transition by choosing Apply Effects > Effects Tree from the Image Tools toolbar. 2. Make the duration of the transition 30 frames. 3. Expand the tree and add a Composite node (Tree Effects folder) as shown here. The Composite node composites Input 2 (Cherub clip) over Input 1 (Lovers clip). 3 of 9
4. Add a Matte effect to the tree between Input 2 and the Composite node as shown here. The Matte effect will be used to cut out the heart shape, which will reveal the clip underneath. 4 of 9
Drawing the Heart Shape 1. Open the Matte Effect property editor and switch to the Shapes property page. 2. Select the Create Polyline tool and draw a rough outline of a heart, as shown. Ctrl-click when creating the final point to close the shape. The heart shape reveals the Lovers clip underneath. 3. Fine-tune the shape of your heart by clicking Edit Shapes. Tip: You can modify the shape using the tangent handles of each control point, which are accessible by pressing the H key and clicking a control point. You can also add control points using the A key. If the edge of the heart is too hard, select the Apply Blur option. A high setting will make the edges of the heart very soft. For an antialiased matte, you can set the blur value to its minimum. 5 of 9
Animating the Heart Shape 1. Zoom out in the viewer to about 25%. 2. Go to the first frame of the effect by clicking the Previous Key button. 3. Select the heart shape and then use the Scale Shape tool to scale it up, so that the heart is larger than the image in the viewer. Tip: To scale the shape proportionally, hold down the Shift key while dragging in the viewer. 4. Set a keyframe by clicking the Set/Remove Key icon. 5. Go to the last frame of the effect by clicking the Next Key button. 6 of 9
6. Scale the heart shape down, so that it is no longer visible. The Cherub clip is now displayed in the viewer. 7. Set another keyframe. 8. Right-click on the Set/Remove Key icon and choose Linear from the menu. The animation of the heart shape is interpolated linearly between the start and end shapes. 7 of 9
Offsetting the Center of the Wipe 1. Reset the pan and zoom of the viewer. 2. Right-click on Input 1 in the tree and choose View from the menu. This lets you solo the Input 1 clip. 3. With the Matte node selected, select the heart shape and move it to the woman s lips. 4. In the Matte property editor, set a keyframe at the last frame. This determines the ending point of the heart shape. 5. Right-click on Input 1 and choose View from the menu, so that you can view both clips again. Note: To reverse the direction of the wipe, open the Matte property editor, change the setting from Fill Inside to Fill Outside, and set the Fill Outside to 0. You ll also have to change the animation of the heart shape, so that it goes from small to big. 8 of 9
6. Scrub through the effect to make sure it gives you the desired result. 7. Process the effect in frames. 8. Play back your sequence when the processing is complete Avid Technology, Inc.
