2 TM and ClipEdit TM Advanced News Production System for Journalists For two decades the video tape recorder dominated the way in which news materials was stored, edited and transmitted in broadcast stations. With recent developments in disk media technology, non-linear access to recorded material has become a reality and successfully challenged the dominant role of the VTR in these applications. The merits of the non-linear server are now well known; quick random access, rapid cueing for transmission, the sharing of material between several editing suites, no tape juggling of reels of tape all these factors save a significant amount of time and effort. Linking a high-resolution server to an easy-to-learn human interface provides the tool that journalists need to create news programs with high production values and powerful messages. Sony has developed and ClipEdit software solutions that run on PCs to provide a creative environment for journalists and news editors. They provide a seamless, automatic link with broadcast quality news server systems such as the combination of Sony MAV-1000 Multiaccess Video and Audio Server with BZN-2000/3000/5000 News System Software. They allow simultaneous recording with a news server and use the same data base. The ClipEdit EDL (Edit Decision List) can be read by a DNE-1000 News Editing Workstation if the edit needs to be refined. Alternatively, if no further work is necessary, the ClipEdit EDL can be auto conformed by the MAV-1000 server system. The journalists workstations use a Windows NT platform and provide both video and audio editing / browsing, and because many of these terminals can access the server at the same time, the need to copy material can be eliminated. and ClipEdit now give journalists the degree of multi-user access to video that they have long enjoyed when working with scripts and wires. 4 Main Features Editing Capability Video and audio editing is provided on the ClipEdit Journalist terminal. ClipEdit enables journalists to browse all available material and the material which is going on air. Seamless Link with the On-Line News Server The is able to record material simultaneously with the On-Line News Server. This means that the On-Line News Server and the can use the same EDL and material, and share the same information. This provides cost effective, shared access to the complete video content of the server. Voice-over and Audio Split Editing The GUI provides an audio waveform display to make it easy to decide the Mark In and Out points, the audio mix and audio levels. Audio and video split editing, audio split between each audio channel are provided. A voice-over file can also be created. Script Writing The ClipEdit system can run on the same computer as Windows NT 4.0-compatible newsroom text systems. ClipEdit simply adds a video editing window to the journalist s computer screen. That means that they have all the benefits of desktop video editing without changing the way they write scripts and generate newscast rundowns. Journalists can edit the script and complete the program all by themselves. When a story is being edited, the video replay speed and the text display speed can be linked together. For example, when a voice-over is being rehearsed, the text being read is synchronous with the video playback. A/B Roll Editing A/B Roll editing is available with ClipEdit. Simple effects, such as Dissolves and Wipes are displayed on screen. Mosaic effects are shown as a blank area on the screen. All effects are included in the EDL. Powerful Combination with the DNE-1000 News Editing Workstation The GUI (Graphic User Interface) of ClipEdit is very similar to that of the News Editing Workstation, DNE Because the ClipEdit terminal has frame accurate editing, the EDL it produces can be used with the DNE This reduces the editing time for both editors and journalists. ClipEdit can also be used to edit audio files without compression so they can be transferred directly to the on-line news server for use by a DNE ClipEditing Window Access Window
