2 Module 9: Additional Editing Techniques Objectives: Use track color coding to help organize and identify material Use clip looping to quickly repeat a selection for a set duration or number of iterations Use Grid mode to edit material while conforming to a specified timing grid Use various tools to edit MIDI data 1812

3 Track Color Coding Track Color Coding Set in Preferences > Display None: No color coding Tracks and MIDI Channels: Color coded by voice assignment or MIDI channel assignment Tracks and MIDI Devices: Color coded by voice assignment or MIDI device assignment Groups: Color coded by group assignment Track Type (default): Color coded by track type To Display Track Colors Select View > Mix Window Views > Track Color Select View > Edit Window Views > Track Color Use the Mix Window View selector or Edit Window View selector

4 Clip Looping Can loop audio clips, MIDI clips, and clip loops Looped clip = source clip + one or more loop iterations Creating Looped Clips Open Clip Looping window Choose Clip > Loop Press Option+Command+L (Mac) or Alt+Ctrl +L (Windows) Set loop options Number of Loops Loop Length Loop Until End of the Session or Next Clip Enable Crossfade (with Settings)

5 Clip Looping (2) Editing Looped Clips Using Standard Trim or Loop Trim tools: Main part of clip: Entire looped clip will be trimmed, adding or removing iterations. In line with loop icon: Length of loop iterations will be trimmed, overall length remains unchanged. Considerations for Working with Clip Loops Looping can only be applied to an entire source clip. Looping cannot be applied to multiple clips on the same track. Creating a clip group permits inclusion of multiple clips or silence. Looping can be applied to multitrack clip groups. When creating a multitrack loop, looping is applied to each track separately, unless clips are grouped. With nested loops only the top layer can be edited without unlooping

6 Clip Looping (3) Unlooping Clips Clip > Unloop Remove Removes iterations, leaving only the source clip Flatten Creates individual clips from each loop iteration Clip > Ungroup Same result as Clip > Unloop and Flatten Clip > Ungroup All All iterations are flattened, including nested loops

7 Editing on the Grid Using Grid Mode Absolute Grid Snaps clip start and notes to Grid boundaries Relative Grid Clips and notes move by Grid units, maintaining their relative position/offset from the Grid Separating Clips on the Grid Performs Separate command at Grid intervals Edit > Separate Clip > On Grid Specify Pre-Separate Amount to create handles, if desired Loop Trim Tool Top Half of Clip Creates Loop Iterations Bottom Half of Clip Standard Trim tool

8 Editing MIDI Data Editing MIDI Clips Cutting or clearing across a note s start point removes the entire note. Cutting or clearing across a note s end point but not its start point will result in the note overlapping the edge of the clip. Trimming a MIDI clip s head beyond a note s start point removes the entire note. Trimming a MIDI clip s tail beyond a note s end point will result in the note overlapping the end of the clip. When moving and placing MIDI clips with overlapping notes, the notes move with the clips. When placing a MIDI clip with overlapping notes next to or near another clip, the overlapping notes extend into the next clip

10 Editing MIDI Data (3) Editing Existing MIDI Notes Use the Edit window or MIDI Editor window Use the Grabber, Selector, and/or Pencil tools Selecting MIDI Notes Shift-click with Grabber or Pencil Click and drag with Grabber (displays a Marquee when not over a note) Drag with Selector/Option-drag with Pencil Click on mini-keyboard (selects all notes of that pitch) Transposing Notes Select notes Drag up or down with Grabber (press Shift to constrain start times)
