1 "Missing log" in edit viewer, all media gone Posted by prodeuser - 17 Aug :14 So, this has happened a couple of times now. I am a new Lightworks user and have been doing some testing. As I increase the tasks I ask Lightworks to handle (more video tracks, FX, etc.), I end up getting a "[Missing Log]" message next to "Edit #1" in the edit viewer. Additionally, in my clips bin, all the metadata is missing and has been replaced with the the name of the metadata fields. For example, the "Name" field just says "name" and the "Reel" field just says "reelid". They are all like this. Finally, the timeline still exists with what appears to be my original edit, but the clip names are gone. The edit viewer just says "Media Offline". The bin that holds my media still has the thumbnail, but if I double-click to open a clip in the viewer, it just says "[Empty]". Also, if I right-click on the Bin Generator icon and select "Show Bin of project contents", all I get is the edit and none of the media I imported. It's like all the media just vanished (and "Relink missing media" is grayed out). This is most peculiar and renders Lightworks pretty much unusable for me for the time being. I would be curious to know if anyone else has had this issue and, if so, have you found a cure? Thanks for your input! 2 I had the very same thing happen. I can't remember if perhaps I moved some audio files when Lightworks was closed but when my project opened Missing Log was in the title area of my edits and none of the footage was online. I just started the project again which isn't an ideal situation but I didn't know what else to do. I have since been backing up by exporting my project regularly. I think if I had a backup in export format I could have got back from that. Posted by prodeuser - 17 Aug :05 The thing is, I haven't seen any pattern as to when it occurs. One time it happened while I was in the video router and another time it happened while I was adjusting some audio. It seems kind of random, which is the worst kind of problem. Luckily, I wasn't editing anything important, just messing around to learn Lightworks. However, it leads me to believe that I wouldn't be able to use it on a real project. It has to be some kind of bug in the code that is corrupting a database or reference file somewhere. Are you using LW 64-bit and Win 7? I wonder if it is a 64-bit issue exclusively. No, I'm exclusively using Ubuntu bit and since you mention it I remember I was poking around with the video routing when this happened to me also. 3 mit=15&limitstart=15&itemid=81#51064 Posted by prodeuser - 18 Aug :10 I would say my issue is similar to the one posted by stanner with the exception of this part: I should also note that there is now an "Edit" in the Project Contents bin called "Project Contents(Edit)", that I did not create, that contains an unedited copy of everything I imported, sometimes twice. My project still has the original timeline with clips on it, but those clips have nothing in them. It's like most other NLE's when you have unlinked media - the spot still exists on the timeline as a placeholder until you re-link the media. In this case, however, none of the original media shows up in any of the bins and the "Relink Media" option is grayed-out (which makes sense because it doesn't think there is any media in the project). Now, I will say that I haven't examined all the files that stanner did (.ed5,.odb, etc.), nor have I spent a ton of time digging into the issue. I currently have Vegas 11 (which is crash prone on my machine for some reason) and was considering a switch to Lightworks. In my preliminary testing, Lightworks seems to perform better as far as real time playback and I really like the ease of trimming on the timeline. Unfortunately, this issue leaves me using Vegas for the time being. At least when Vegas crashes, I can reload my project and pick up from the last save. I spent all morning learning to use the software/building a simple project, and then my main video source disappeared in a similar manner - the 'holding place' was still on the timeline of the edit, but the name and contents were gone. As I said, it was a simple project, so since I had learned quite a bit, it didn't take long to reproduce it. But, now, the Audio track disappeared, but the video is still there. I have not moved any files. There appears to be no rhyme or reason. Once it occurred when I was messing with effects, but the next time it occurred I wasn't. 3 / 7

4 Any suggestions? I can rebuild it again, but I am afraid it will happen again just when I am getting close to being finished. Posted by prodeuser - 19 Aug :50 Well, I have some more weirdness to report: I closed down Lightworks last night and opened the project that had the issue tonight to see if my audio had disappeared as it had for NCSUAaron. As it turns out, the audio placeholders are there showing the waveform and everything, but no audio output. Now, listen up Lightworks code writers, 'cause this one is crazy. I hope I can adequately describe this behavior so that it makes a modicum of sense to the people that create this stuff! Okay, here goes...the clips are still on the timeline as described in my previous post: clips of various colors on the timeline with no clip name. The blue "[Missing Log]" message next to "Edit #1" in the edit viewer has been replaced with "[ ]" unless it is playing through or parked on a transition when it reads "[Effect]". Now, if I play the sequence, the clips play in the edit viewer as they normally would, BUT if I pause playback, the edit viewer window says "Media Offline." However, if I pause on a clip that has an effect - doesn't seem to matter what the effect is - the edit viewer does NOT say "Media Offline" but shows a still frame of the clip as it should. I tested this theory by parking the playhead on a clip with an effect and toggled the effect on and off. As I suspected, my hypothesis was confirmed: effect off = media offline, effect on = media online. This also holds true for scrubbing: a clip with an effect will playback in the edit viewer while scrubbing, whereas a clip without an effect will just show black. At no time was I able to get audio playback; this is video only. Additionally, if I right-click on the Bin Generator and select "Show Bin of project contents", all I get is a bin with Edit #1 in it and nothing else. The original imported media has vanished. Whew...glad that's over. NCSUAaron, are you getting any of these behaviors? It sounds like we are having the same problem. 4 / 7

The work of two days just vanished for no apparent reason. I can't recall what exactly I did but I did not touch my source material. I found no way of getting my edit back I hope the guys from Editshare have some idea what happened here... I won't touch any other project with LIghtworks until this issue is resolved. Would it help if I were to send anything at this point, or would it be useless since I don't have the "Missing Logs" and empty holding places on my edits any longer? I'll gladly send something over if you think it will help identify the cause of the issues. 7 Gotcha... well, i have a couple more tweaks to make... fingers crossed that it doesn't drop again, but, if it does, i'll follow your instructions and send the files over. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee that it will be of much help because I tried to fix the probem myself. The "Missing Log" message still is displayed with the Media offline. EDIT: Can you also zip up and send us your Backup error log folder as well? Where do I find that? It's not in my user folder nor in my Lightworks folder.
