New Hardware Provides Badwidth Improvemets System Director The Avid Uity ISIS egie houses ewly egieered ISX ad ISS switches that provide greater badwidth i the ISIS switchig etwork. This release also itroduces a ew 64-bit System Director that ca be used with ew ad old geeratio switches i the egies. I additio, the ISIS egies ow support 2 terabyte (TB) ISBs. The Avid Uity ISIS System Director uses a Itel SR2500 server with 9 GB of memory ad a 64-bit Widow operatig system. The ew 64-bit System Director provides the followig support: 64-bit System Director 10 millio files 32-bit System Director 2.5 millio files 64-bit System Director 500,000 folders (25,000 files per folder) 32-bit System Director 10,000 folders 5638 users 1000 groups a user ca be i 30 groups 8

9 Storage Blades Layer 1 Switches Avid Uity ISIS has qualified 1 terabyte (TB) drives. The ISBs with the two 1 TB drives are referred to as i2000s. The i2000 ISBs require 512 KB chuk size, see New Storage Group Size o page 10. The ew geeratio ISX ad ISS switches istall i the same egies as earlier releases, the chassis has ot chaged. Although, all the switches i the egies eed to be of the same geeratio. The two ew switches are silk-screeed with ISX2000 ad ISS2000. The ew switches caot be mixed i ISIS egies with earlier versios of the switches (labeled ISX1000 ad ISS1000). If your ISX ad ISS switches are ot labeled, cosider them the earlier versios. The ISS2000 switches are required for 10-Gb cliets ad 512 KB chuk size, see New Storage Group Size o page 10. The Avid Uity ISIS documetatio refers to ISX2000 ad ISS2000 switches as v2.x hardware ad ISX1000 ad ISS1000 switches as v1.x hardware. 10-Gb Cliet Support with TCP/IP Offload (TOE) Techology The Chelsio 10-Gb Etheret PCI-e adapter boards are supported i the HP xw8400 ad HPxw8600 editig systems ad coect to the Avid Uity ISIS system usig a fiber optic cable. The Chelsio 10 Gb Etheret adapter boards are equipped with a fully TCP/IP compliat chip that bypasses the etwork iterface software processig. This TOE techology icreases the server performace while reducig the CPU utilizatio. These 10-Gb Etheret coectios are iteded for ultra high-resolutio cliets (UHRC) supportig two streams of 1:1 ucompressed HD. 10 Gb Network Coectios c Cliets with the Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board ca coect directly ito the ISS Gb port o the Avid Uity ISIS Egie. Two 10-Gb cliets ca coect ito oe egie; oe cliet to each ISS2000. Egies with v1.x ISS1000 hardware do ot support 10-Gb cliets. The Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board is shipped with a SFP+ optical trasceiver. The Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board ad SFP+ trasceiver are tested ad qualified to work as a sigle compoet. Do ot remove or swap the SFP+ optical trasceivers. The Chelsio adapter board ad SFP+ trasceivers are replaced as a sigle compoet. Ultra High Resolutio Cliet Istructios for istallig the Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board, Chelsio driver, ad Avid Uity ISIS cliet software are provided i the Avid Uity ISIS Cliet Guide. The Chelsio adapter board has bee qualified i the followig cofiguratios: Slot 4 i the HP xw8400 (supported o dual quad-core processor systems oly) Slot 6 i the HP xw8600 Oce your Avid Uity ISIS 10-Gb cliet hardware ad software is istalled, the followig requiremets are eeded with the Ultra High Resolutio cliet: You eed to use the ew Ultra High Resolutio settig i the Cliet Maager Prefereces Your workspace must be set to a 512 KB chuk size Your Avid Uity ISIS ifrastructure must be usig v2.x switches (ISS2000 ad IXS2000) New Storage Group Size c Storage elemets are combied to create storage groups i the ISIS file system. These Storage Groups ca be cofigured to either operate usig 512 KB (default) or 256 KB chuk sizes. Earlier Avid Uity ISIS releases used 256 KB chuk sizes. For more iformatio about settig the chuk size, see the Avid Uity ISIS Admiistratio Guide. Avid Uity ISIS switch hardware shipped with v1.x (ISS1000 ad IXS1000) does ot support 512 KB chuk sizes. If you have Avid Uity ISIS v2.x software ruig o v1.x switches, you must select the 256KB chuk size whe addig storage elemets to the file system to create Storage Groups. You caot chage the chuk size of a Storage Group oce the Storage Group has bee created. To chage the chuk size of a existig Storage Group, you must delete the Storage Group ad create a ew Storage Group with the desired chuk size. The chuk size selectio is oly available whe addig the storage elemets. Whe you delete Storage Groups all data o that Storage Group is lost. 10

11 Movig Workspaces Betwee Storage Groups You ca move workspaces betwee Storage Groups that use the same chuk sizes. You ca also move a workspace with a 256 KB chuk size, ito a Storage Group with a 512 KB chuk size. Movig from a 512 KB chuk size workspace to a 256 KB chuk size Storage Group is ot supported. Cliets should ot access workspaces that are i the process of beig moved whe it is a 256 KB chuk size workspace beig moved ito a Storage Group with a 512 KB chuk size. Avid recommeds that cliets umout these workspaces util the move is complete to avoid a uitetioal access. Oce the move begis, it caot be cacelled. Addig a ISB to the File System If you add a ISB (displays as a available storage elemet) to your file system, make sure you match the chuk size of the ew storage elemet to the chuk size of the existig storage group. New storage elemets are added with a default chuk size of 512 KB. You caot mix chuk sizes withi a Storage Group. To chage the chuk size of a ISB, you must remove the ew storage elemet from the file system ad add the storage elemet agai choosig the correct chuk size. Chuk Size Support With ISB All ISBs (i500, i1000, ad i2000) support the 512 KB chuk size. Although you must have the ew v2.x switch hardware (ISS2000 ad IXS2000) to use the 512 KB chuk size. Avid Uity ISIS Admiistratio Tool Reamed 11 Avid Uity ISIS Admiistratio Tool has bee redesiged so that the most frequetly used fuctios are oe click away. Most of the tools still fuctio the way they have i previous releases, but access to them has become faster ad easier. The ew Admiistratio Tool desig has bee reamed to the ISIS Maagemet Cosole. User Access to the ISIS Maagemet Cosole Your Avid Uity ISIS cliets ca ow access the ISIS Maagemet Cosole without beig the ISIS Admiistrator. Whe the Avid Uity ISIS Widows or Macitosh cliet types the address of the ISIS Maagemet Cosole i their browser, the cliet ca log i usig their cliet ame ad password. Whe you logi to the ISIS Maagemet Cosole as a o-admiistrator user, you have the followig possibilities: If the user accout has privileges to resize or modify the protectio of the Workspaces, the ISIS Maagemet Cosole displays three submeus: Workspaces, System Diagostics, ad Istallers. If the user accout does ot have the privilege to resize or modify the protectio of the Workspaces, the ISIS Maagemet Cosole displays two submeus: System Diagostics ad Istallers.

12 New i Versio 2.0 Avid LDAP/Uity Accout Sychroizer LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a Iteret protocol that some applicatios use to look up iformatio such as accout iformatio, user ames ad groups from a server. The Avid LDAP/Uity Accout Sychroizer allows Avid Uity ISIS admiistrators to sychroize ISIS user accouts with existig LDAP user accouts usig Active Directory. This feature allows you to create ad modify a large umber of users ad groups withi the Avid Uity ISIS system. The Accout Sychroizer provides you with the followig fuctioality: Cofigure coectios to multiple LDAP servers withi the same domai Display user accouts available i the LDAP server Add ew groups ad users to the ISIS system Grat user memberships to groups Remove user membership from a group i ISIS if user o loger belogs to that group o the LDAP server Users sychroized by the LDAP Sychroizatio tool are automatically added as Remote users for autheticatio to the LDAP server You ca use the Avid LDAP/Uity Accout Sychroizer to search for groups ad their users o a LDAP server, sychroize (recocile) users ad groups by addig or removig users ad groups from the ISIS system, geerate a report of the accout actios, ad view a history of the sychroizatio activity. You must first cofigure a coectio by eterig the LDAP server s fully qualified ame, port, ad user distiguished ame ad password for autheticatio. For more iformatio, see the Avid Uity ISIS Admiistratio Guide. Full Redistributio c Sigificat improvemets have bee made i this release whe performig a full redistributio. After updatig the Avid Uity ISIS server software, ad the ISIS software o all the cliets, you must perform a full redistributio regardless if there have ot bee ay cofiguratio chages sice the last full redistributio. The full redistributio process that might have take several hours i earlier releases ca be performed i a matter of miutes, depedig o the system load. Oce you do a full redistributio with v2.x, v1.x cliets caot read from, or write to those workspaces. For more details, see Full Upgrade Istructios For v2.0 o page

13 Failover The faster full redistributios o workspaces oly apply to workspaces that have ot chaged the total amout of storage i a workspace. For example, if you had a workspace with six Storage Elemets (12 TB) ad either removed or added two Storage Elemets (4 TB), your full redistributio is sigificatly loger tha if the workspace size did ot chage. A full redistributio is still recommeded at 10 cofiguratio chages. At 32 cofiguratio chages the Avid uity ISIS software automatically performs a full redistributio. Previously, if a 10-Gb truk lik failed, the software did ot load balace the traffic amog the remaiig truk liks. This behavior has chaged i Avid Uity ISIS v2.0. Now if a 10-Gb truk lik fails, the software automatically load balaces the traffic amog the remaiig truk liks. c For example i a four-way 10-Gb truk if a sigle 10-Gb lik fails, the traffic is load balaced amog the remaiig three liks. This also meas that the average traffic distributio icreases from 25% with the four liks, to 33% i the three liks. The traffic automatically re-balaces the load whe a truk lik returs. It is strogly advised that etwork plaers setup the truks to hadle the additioal load if a lik or a set of liks should fail i a truk cofiguratio. Warig messages are set to ISIS Maagemet Cosole otifyig you that a 10-Gb aggregatio lik status has chaged. The Switch Diagostics also provides errors whe you have a failed lik i a truk. This failover feature fuctioality ca be disabled i switch aget page. Macitosh Zoe 3 Cliet Support Avid Uity ISIS Macitosh cliets are ow supported i zoe 3. Zoes are described i the Avid Uity ISIS Setup Guide ad Avid Uity ISIS Cliet Guide. Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 ow requires Macitosh G5 cliets ru a ISIS tuig utility before these cliets ca coect to Avid Uity ISIS. 14 Full Upgrade Istructios For v2.0 Macitosh G5 Settigs Utility Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 ad later requires you to ru a Avid Uity ISIS Etheret Tuig utility o all Macitosh G5 cliet systems. I earlier releases this utility improved performace, i this release it is a requiremet. This utility modifies the Etheret driver settigs which are required for Macitosh G5 cliet systems i a Avid Uity ISIS eviromet. For istructios, see Adjustig Etheret Iterface Settigs o Macitosh G5 Cliets o page 25. Fixed I This Release The followig previously reported issues have bee fixed i Avid Uity ISIS v2.0. Previously if you were attemptig to capture DNxHD uder the followig coditios, the capture could have failed. These coditios o loger cause a failure. A full redistributio or remove redistributio is i progress. You are capturig to a Storage Group of 16 storage elemets or less. The Avid editor capturig the DNxHD is ruig Media Composer v3.0, or NewsCutter v7.0, or Symphoy v3.0 with a Nitris DX. Previously the Cliet Maager did ot display more tha ie Remote Hosts i the Prefereces dialog box of the Cliet Maager. You were permitted to add more tha ie, but you could ot scroll or access more tha ie. The Remote Hosts Prefereces dialog box ow allows you to access 14 Remote Hosts. For iformatio i addig Remote Hosts, see the Avid Uity ISIS Cliet Guide. Full Upgrade Istructios For v2.0 To upgrade to this release, istall Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 o the System Director ad Upgrade Storage Blades ad Switch Blades i the Avid Uity egies to the v2.0 firmware. The Avid Uity ISIS cliets ca be v1.4, v1.5, or v2.0 oly if you do ot do a full redistributio o the workspace after you have updated the ifrastructure to v2.0. It is desirable to get the cliets to the v2.0 release withi a reasoable time frame. After the Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 software is istalled o your ifrastructure, perform a full redistributio o all existig workspaces at your earliest coveiece ad after all your cliets have bee updated to v2.0. A full redistributio is eeded to take advatage of the performace improvemets. The redistributio is required eve if the system has zero (0) cofiguratio chages listed. 14

15 c Oce you have doe a full redistributio o all your workspaces with v2.x software, ay v1.x cliets that have ot updated the Avid Uity ISIS to v2.x software will ot be able to read from or write to those workspaces. Whe istallig the software o a Widows 2000 cliet, make sure you first ru Widows Update ad accept all High-priority Updates ad istall Widows msi 3.1. If Widows msi 3.1 is ot istalled, you might receive a error message iformig you that a required DLL is missig while istallig the cliet software. The followig process summarizes the upgrade process from v1.x to v2.0: 1. Start the System Director ad Log ito Admiistrator accout. 2. Start Iteret Explorer 7 ad chage the followig settigs. a. Click Tools > Iteret Optios ad chage the Security followig: - Iteret - Medium - Trusted - Low b. Click the Advaced tab ad chage the followig: - Phishig Filter - Disabled - Use SSL Eabled (checked) - Use TLS Disabled (uchecked) 3. Upgrade System Director software, load the ISIS Blade Istallers, ad load the ISIS Cliet Istallers o the System Director. For more iformatio, see the Avid Uity ISIS Setup Guide. 4. Upgrade all your ISBs ad ISSs. Usig the Admiistratio tool, select all the ISBs ad click Upgrade Storage Blades ad the select all your ISSs ad click Upgrade Switch Blades. You do ot eed to wait for the ISBs to be fiished, you ca upgrade ISBs ad ISSs at the same time. 5. Watch the upgrade progress i your Moitorig tool ad wait util every ISS is at the Istall Waitig state ad the power dow all the Avid ISIS egies. If you already have Avid Uity ISIS v2.x istalled i your eviromet you do ot eed to power cycle the Avid ISIS egies. Power cyclig the egies is oly required whe updatig from v1.x to v2.x. 6. Power o the Avid ISIS egies i 1 miute itervals startig with the chassis that has the IXSs. This reduces stress o the stack. After the Avid ISIS egies restart, the ISSs cotiue with the istall (o additioal user itervetio is ecessary). 15

16 Full Upgrade Istructios For v2.0 c 7. Update your Avid Uity ISIS cliets to the v2.0 software. Do ot cotiue to the ext step util all your cliets are updated. 8. After the Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 software is istalled, a full redistributio must be performed o all existig workspaces. The redistributio is required eve if the system has 0 cofiguratio chages listed. Oce you have doe a full redistributio o all your workspaces with v2.x software, ay v1.x cliets that have ot updated the Avid Uity ISISI cliet to v2.x software will ot be able to mout workspaces. Avid Iterplay Media Idexer Servers If you are usig a Avid Iterplay Media Idexer server with Avid Uity ISIS v2.0, you eed to istall the Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 cliet istaller ad a specific patch for the for the Media Idexer. The Media Idexer patch is icluded o the top level of the Avid Uit ISIS istaller DVD. Although the Broadcom etwork adapter does ot have a provisio today for settig the Trasmit (Tx) or Receive (Rx) Descriptors like the Itel MT Server etwork adapter, there is a registry key that ca be chaged o the Rx side the side that is importat for improved Read performace to miimize the risk of packet loss. The Avid Uity ISIS v2.0 cliet software icludes the registry adjustmet for the followig computers. Click Start > Ru. 2. Type Regedit to eter the Registry Editor applicatio 3. Chagig the Default Drive for the System Director Software Durig istallatio, the istaller defaults to loadig the System Director software o drive D:. You ca chage that locatio by specifyig a differet drive for istallatio. If you istall the applicatio to a locatio differet from the default drive D, ad the later istall the applicatio to the default drive, the ew software does ot fuctio properly. You ca correct this either before or after istallatio by copyig three files from drive C to drive D. To chage the default istallatio directory before reistallig the Avid Uity ISIS applicatio: 1. O drive D, create the followig directory structure. You must spell the ames exactly as they appear o drive C. D:\Program Files\Avid Techology\AvidUityISISSystemDirector 2. Performace Overview The performace for Avid Uity ISIS cliets ad servers is based o the geeratio of the switch hardware (ISS ad IXS) i the egie ad the Chuk Size. The followig gives you a base umber of the MB/s you ca expect of each geeratio. For the most up-to-date performace data o Avid Uity ISIS, search the Avid Kowledge Base for the Avid Uity ISIS Performace Guide. Avid Uity ISIS v2.x hardware (ISS2000 ad IXS2000) The ISS Gb port is able to support 600 MB/s per 10-Gb port to a Zoe 2 switch. The 10-Gb cliets are able get 300 MB/s regardless if they are coected to Zoe 1 (direct coect) or Zoe 2. Avid Uity ISIS v1.x hardware (ISS1000 ad IXS1000) The ISS Gb port is able to support 230 MB/s per 10-Gb port to a Zoe 2 switch. The ISS1000 is able to support up to the total 260 MB/s.
