Chapter 2: Installing VENUE Software 2.9 This chapter shows you how to install VENUE software 2.9 to update or restore your VENUE system. Installing VENUE Software The VENUE 2.9 installer lets you choose either of the following methods for installing the new software: Update Upgrades the VENUE software and leaves User Settings, Shows and Presets intact. Restore Completely erases the system drive and places a new install of VENUE software on the drive. It is recommended to perform a full system restore at least once per year in order to ensure optimal system drive performance. Plug-ins and the software for ECx Ethernet Control (if present) must be re-installed after performing either an Update or Restore. Backing Up Current Settings 3 Do one of the following to select the type of data to transfer: To transfer all data, click the Console icon. To transfer Console Settings only, click the Settings icon. Console Settings is simply the current state of the console (essentially an auto-saved Show file). This lets you transfer the current state of the console without having to first create and name a Show file. Transferring Console Settings does not transfer presets or Show Folders. To transfer Show Folders, click the Show Folders icon. To transfer individual Shows, click the Shows icon. To transfer all Preset Folders, click the Preset Folders icon. To transfer Presets for individual items, click the Built-In icon or the Plug-In icon and choose a processor or plug-in from the pop-up menu. Or, choose D-Show Input Channel to transfer Input Channel Presets. To transfer Scope Sets for Recall Safe, click the Scope Sets icon. 4 In the left column, select the items you want to transfer from the VENUE system to your portable storage device. Whether you are performing an update or a full system restore, you should back up any Console Settings, Show files and Presets on your system before installing VENUE software. To back up current settings: 1 Go to the Filing page and click the Transfer tab. 2 Connect a portable storage device (such as a USB key disk) to the system. The device appears above the right column of the Transfer page. Show file selected for transfer to USB key disk USB key disk appearing in the Transfer page The USB ports on the Mix Rack, FOH Rack, and SC48 are the faster USB 2.0 ports. Use these ports to reduce the time needed for large transfers. 5 Click the Transfer button. Large transfers may take time. Transfer status is shown by a progress bar. A transfer may be cancelled by clicking Cancel. Cancelled transfers may result in partial folder contents on the storage device, which will have to be deleted manually. 6 Remove the portable storage device from the system. Chapter 2: Installing VENUE Software 2.9 3

Installing VENUE Software To install VENUE 2.9 software: 1 Make sure all sound systems are shut down or muted. 2 Insert the VENUE 2.9 System Restore CD into the system CD-ROM drive. 3 Shut down your system by going to Options > System and choosing Shut Down. 4 Restart your system while pressing and holding F10 on the keyboard until one of the following occurs: If the system begins to boot off the System Restore CD, proceed to step 5. or If the Restore CD text screen appears, release F10 and use the Up and Down Arrow keys to select the CD drive, then press Enter. (Doing so will not harm the system, but will take longer, especially if you have multiple plug-ins to install manually.) 7 Quit the installer application and eject the installer disc. 8 Click the Return to VENUE shortcut on the desktop to re-launch the VENUE software. If prompted to restart the system, click Yes and wait for the system to restart. Chapter 2: Installing VENUE Software 2.9 5

Loading and Converting Show Files VENUE Show files can be opened on any VENUE system. All VENUE systems can load Show files created with prior versions of VENUE software. VENUE software loads and automatically converts Show files created with earlier versions of VENUE software. It does not automatically convert the Show file saved on disk. The saved version 1.x or 2.x Show file can still be opened on a VENUE system running that earlier version, if needed. To load and convert a Show file: 1 Transfer the Show file to the system if it is not already present. Backwards Compatibility Opening VENUE 2.9 Show Files on Previous 2.x Versions Show files saved in software version 2.9 can be opened on any systems running software versions 2.x. However, when opening a Show file created on a VENUE system using a higher software version onto a VENUE system using a lower software version, features or functionality available in the higher version of the software that are stored with the Show file are ignored or unavailable. Version 2.x Files are Not Compatible with Version 1.x Files Show files saved in software versions 2.x cannot be opened on VENUE systems running software versions 1.x. 2 Go to the Filing page and click the Load tab. 3 In the Show Folders column, click the name of the Show Folder containing the show file you want to load. 4 In the Shows column, click the name of the Show file you want to load. The Show file version appears in the Info window. 5 Click the Load button. VENUE software loads the file without affecting the saved Show file. Until you save the Show as a new file (or overwrite the original), the Show file will not be saved to disk in the newer format. While the file is loading, VENUE software checks whether any saved data will have to be modified for the new file format. Data Conversion Show files created with software versions 2.0.x will be converted to version 2.9 format when loaded into a system running version 2.9. Conversion is necessary to support the new and changed features added in each release of VENUE software. If you load a Show file saved in version 1.x on a system running version 2.0 or higher, the following Snapshot attributes may also be affected. Beginning with software version 2.0, Snapshots store all parameters. Previously, Snapshots only stored data that was explicitly scoped for storage. Channel Delay is now stored separately, and has a dedicated Data Type Scope button in the Snapshots main page. Previously, channel Delay was stored as part of the larger Pre data type. VCA membership is now stored as part of the VCA channel itself. Previously, VCA membership was stored with the channels assigned to each VCA. 6 What s New in VENUE Software 2.9

Chapter 3: New Features This chapter describes the following new or changed features: VENUE Link Importing VENUE Settings into Pro Tools on page 7. Creating Pro Tools Markers from VENUE Snapshots on page 9. Redundant Output Mode Installing Multiple Option Cards on page 11. Making Redundant Output Connections on page 13. Enabling Redundant Output Mode on page 13. Support for IO16 VENUE IO16 Card on page 14. Control Settings Dialog Clicking the Control Settings button opens the Control Settings dialog, where you can enter a name for your VENUE system, enter a password for your system, and edit TCP/UDP port information. Control Settings dialog Network Setting Dialog Clicking the Network Settings button opens the Network Settings dialog, where IP address settings are edited. VENUE Link (Requires Pro Tools HD 8.1.x) VENUE Link provides Pro Tools and VENUE system integration and interoperability. All that is required to take advantage of VENUE Link is a standard Ethernet connection between compatible versions of VENUE software and Pro Tools. VENUE Link can be used with Pro Tools HD 8.1 and higher, and VENUE systems running VENUE software 2.9 and higher. VENUE Link can be used at the same time as ECx Ethernet Control (for the remote operation of VENUE systems), and Satellite Link (for central control of multiple Pro Tools systems from one Pro Tools system), all to their full functionality. Enabling VENUE Link In VENUE software 2.9, new dialogs for enabling and cofiguring Ethernet options have been added to the Ethernet Control area of the Options > Interactions page. For instructions on connecting, configuring, and enabling your VENUE system and Pro Tools for VENUE Link, see the Live Recording Guide, available with VENUE Standalone software 2.9 or online at Network Settings dialog Importing VENUE Settings into Pro Tools When VENUE Link is enabled, you can import VENUE settings into Pro Tools in two ways. You can create a Pro Tools session from VENUE. Tracks are automatically created, named, and given I/O assignments based on the currently loaded VENUE Show file. You can import VENUE channel names as track names into an existing Pro Tools session. You can use this option in the following ways: If you have created a session from VENUE, but prior to recording you have changed the names of channels on your console, use this feature to update track names automatically. If you are working from an existing template, which includes the VENUE channels plus a variety of other inputs (such as audience mics or playback sources sourced from another Avid peripheral), use this feature to update the VENUE-related track names without affecting the other non-venue tracks. Chapter 3: New Features 7

Create a Session from VENUE When you choose to create a Pro Tools session from VENUE, new mono and stereo audio tracks are created for all patched VENUE system mono and stereo Stage input channels, as well as for any output busses or direct outs patched to HDx or MADI assignable outputs in the VENUE system Patchbay. To create a session from VENUE: 1 On your VENUE system, make sure you have loaded the Show file you want to use as the basis for your Pro Tools session. 2 In Pro Tools, do either of the following: If the Quick Start dialog appears, choose, Create Session from VENUE. If the Quick Start dialog does not appear, choose File > New Session, and choose Create Session from VENUE. 3 To set session parameters, do the following (if session parameters are not visible click the Session Parameters reveal button): Set the audio file format for the session. For optimum compatibility between Windows and Mac, set the file type to BWF (.WAV). Select the bit depth (16 bit or 24 bit). Set sample rate to 48 khz. In most cases, you will not be able to change this value when connected to a VENUE system. 4 Click OK. 6 Click Save. If you are recording multiple instances of the same performance (using the same Show file name), you should save each session to a new folder and name the folder and the session accordingly. New tracks appear in Pro Tools as follows, depending on the type of VENUE channel imported into Pro Tools: Stage Input Channels In the new session, new mono and stereo tracks are created for VENUE system mono and stereo Stage input channels. Tracks are named automatically based on their corresponding Stage input channel names. Duplicate track names are appended incrementally (.1, a.2, and so on). Outputs are automatically assigned, and follow input assignments one-for-one to facilitate Virtual Soundcheck. Track order (top to bottom in the Edit window and left to right in the Mix window) follows channel input order on your VENUE system. Mono Stage input track Duplicate track Stereo Stage input track Input Output Imported Stage input channel tracks and track I/O assignments Creating a session from VENUE in the Quick Start dialog 5 Your most recently loaded VENUE Show file appears as the session name. Accept the name or edit it, and select the drive where you want to save the session. The session should be saved on a dedicated audio drive. Stage input channels in the VENUE stem Patchbay Tracks are created for any Stage input channels patched in the VENUE system Patchbay. To avoid creating tracks for unused inputs, go to Patchbay > Inputs on your VENUE system and deselect (unassign) any unused Stage input channels in the patching grid. Naming the session in the New Session dialog 8 What s New in VENUE Software 2.9

Output Busses and Direct Outs In the new session, new mono and stereo tracks are created for any output busses and Direct Outs patched to assignable outputs in the VENUE system Patchbay. These tracks appear after tracks for Stage inputs (to the right in the Mix window, and below in the Edit window). Tracks are named automatically based on their corresponding VENUE system channel names, and are appended with the corresponding output type as follows: VENUE Channel Type Group output bus Aux output bus Matrix output bus PQ output bus Mains output busses Monitor output Direct output Plug-in output Track Name Appended With (Grp) (Aux) (Mtx) (PQ) (Left-Right) (Center) (Mono) (Mon) (Dir) By default, all outputs of tracks for VENUE system output busses and Direct Outs are assigned to Bus 1 2 in Pro Tools. This routing can be changed. (PI) Importing VENUE Channel Names into an Existing Pro Tools Session You can import VENUE channel names into an existing Pro Tools session. Channel names are imported to tracks that already have a valid VENUE input assignment (for example, Stage1 7 ). If you have added a channel to the currently loaded Show file that does not have a corresponding Pro Tools track, create a new track, set a VENUE input assignment, then choose Import > VENUE Channel Names as Track Names to import names. To import VENUE channel names into an existing Pro Tools session In an existing Pro Tools session, from the File menu, choose Import > VENUE Channel Names as Track Names. Track names are imported the same way as described in Create a Session from VENUE on page 8. However, I/O assignments for all tracks do not change, and no new tracks are created. When you create new sessions in Pro Tools, you can either use pre-formatted VENUE session templates, or create your own template, which you can then use as the basis for new sessions. See the Live Recording Guide or the Pro Tools Reference Guide for more information. Stereo Group assignable output track Input Creating Pro Tools Markers from VENUE Snapshots Mono Matrix assignable output track Output Imported assignable output channel tracks and I/O assignments With VENUE Link enabled, you can set individual VENUE Snapshots to create new Markers in the Pro Tools Timeline. While Pro Tools is recording, whenever that Snapshot is recalled, a new Marker is created. New Markers are automatically named for their corresponding VENUE Snapshots. Once Markers are created from VENUE Snapshots, subsequent recalls of that Snapshot can locate (cue) the Pro Tools playback cursor to the associated Marker while Pro Tools is in playback. In performance, this is a great way for the VENUE operator to be able to precisely control Pro Tools playback for sound effects, beds, or backup material. For subsequent mixdown or for Virtual Soundcheck, you have a fully archived session in which you can quickly navigate to specific songs or cues in your session. On the VENUE system, you can enable or disable individual VENUE Snapshots from creating Pro Tools Markers. In Pro Tools, you can edit VENUE-generated Markers to rename them, move them to a different location in the timeline, disable Snapshot chase, and reassociate a Marker with a different VENUE Snapshot. Assignable output channel tracks in the VENUE system Patchbay Chapter 3: New Features 9

To create a Pro Tools Marker from a VENUE Snapshot: 1 On your VENUE System, go to the Snapshots page. 2 In the Snapshots list, click the Marker icon to enable that Snapshot to create a Pro Tools Marker when recalled during recording. If the Marker icon is not displayed, unhide it by right-clicking one of the Snapshots in the Snapshots list and choose Unhide Marker from the pop-up menu. To locate to a Pro Tools Marker when recalling a VENUE Snapshot: 1 Make sure Pro Tools is either playing back or stopped. 2 On the VENUE System, go to the Snapshots page. 3 In the Snapshots list, select a Snapshot that is associated with a Pro Tools Marker, and click Recall. If Pro Tools is in play, playback continues when recalling any VENUE Snapshot associated with a Pro Tools Marker. Editing Markers Created from VENUE Snapshots Marker icon Markers created by recalling VENUE Snapshots can be edited like other Pro Tools Memory Locations. In Pro Tools, you can rename Markers, move Markers, disable Snapshot chase, and re-associate a Marker with a different VENUE Snapshot. VENUE Snapshots list showing Marker icon enabled For complete information on Memory Locations, see the Pro Tools Reference Guide. Shift-click multiple Snapshots and toggle the Marker icon to enable or disable multiple consecutive Snapshots in the Snapshot list. Control-click to select multiple non-consecutive Snapshots. Right-click in the Snapshot list and choose Select All to select all Snapshots 3 In Pro Tools, locate the Markers ruler. If you do not see it, choose View > Rulers > Markers. 4 Click the Record Enable button for each audio track you want to record. The button flashes red. To record enable all tracks at once, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac) one track Record Enable button. 5 Choose Window > Edit, and in the toolbar (or in the Transport) click the Record button to arm the Transport. 6 Press the Spacebar to start recording. 7 On your VENUE system, select a Snapshot from the Snapshot list and click Recall to recall that Snapshot. 8 Recall any other Snapshots on your VENUE system as required. Markers appear in the Pro Tools Markers ruler for any recalled VENUE Snapshots, and are automatically named to match the corresponding VENUE Snapshot. Edit Memory Location window showing an enabled VENUE Snapshot Marker To rename a Memory Location for a Marker: 1 In the Edit window, double-click the Marker in the Marker ruler to open the Edit Memory Locations dialog. 2 Enter the new name for the Memory Location, and click OK. The edited Marker remains linked to the VENUE Snapshot. To move a VENUE Snapshot-generated Marker: In the Markers ruler in Pro Tools, drag the Marker left or right. Pro Tools ruler showing VENUE Snapshot-generated Markers If you move a VENUE Snapshot in the Snapshot list, it remains linked to the associated Marker. 10 What s New in VENUE Software 2.9

To disable locating to a VENUE Snapshot-generated Marker: 1 In the Edit window, double-click the Marker in the Markers ruler to open the Edit Memory Locations dialog. 2 In the General Properties section, deselect VENUE Snapshot. 3 Click OK. Recalling the VENUE Snapshot does not locate the Pro Tools playback cursor to the disabled Marker. Re-selecting this option restores the locate functionality. To associate a Marker with a different VENUE Snapshot: 1 In the Edit window, double-click the Marker in the Markers ruler to open the Edit Memory Locations dialog. 2 In the General Properties section, next to VENUE Snapshot, choose a different VENUE Snapshot from the pop-up menu. 3 Click OK. The selected VENUE Snapshot locates the Pro Tools playback cursor to the edited Marker. Installing the Clock Source Jumper in the Mix Rack If you have installed a second card in your Mix Rack, you must also install a clock source jumper cable to ensure proper clocking. The clock source jumper has three 40-pin connectors that connect the first Mix Engine card to the second Mix Engine card, and to a port on the Hub48 card. If you already have one HDx card installed, an existing cable must first be removed. Install VENUE software 2.9 before installing the clock source jumper cable. See Installing VENUE Software on page 3. To install the clock source jumper cable: 1 Shut down your sound system. 2 Power down your Mix Rack. 3 Remove the front panel faceplate by unscrewing its mounting screws (#1 Phillips). Keep the screws nearby for remounting the front panel later. Redundant Output Mode (FOH Rack and Mix Rack only) With redundant outputs enabled, you can do the following: With two HDx cards, record all 48 Stage inputs, plus any assignable outputs, to two independent, 64-channel Pro Tools HD systems in a primary/backup configuration. With and HDx card and a MADI card, record all 48 Stage inputs plus any assignable outputs to a Pro Tools HD system, while also transmitting the same channels to an external MADI device. With two MADI cards, send all 48 Stage inputs plus any assignable outputs to two to external MADI devices. Each card s assignable inputs and outputs remain independently routable and freely available. Installing Multiple Option Cards Front of the Mix Rack Faceplate 4 If necessary, install the second card. See the HDx TDM Option guide or the VENUE MADI Option guide for card installation instructions. 5 If you have an existing HDx card installed in your rack, do the following to remove an existing cable from the rack: Locate the first, backmost Mix Engine card. Disconnect the existing ribbon cable (noted in the figure below) from the port labeled Snake by moving the latches on the port outwards to release the connector. For the FOH Rack, to use redundant output mode you must have a second Snake card installed in your rack. See the Snake Card Guide for installation instructions. For the Mix Rack, you must install a clock source jumper cable in your rack. See the section below for installation instructions. For information on installing HDx cards, see the HDx TDM Option guide. For the VENUE MADI card, see the VENUE MADI Option guide. Chapter 3: New Features 11
