Manual for Assemble Editing Preparation Lay a Control Track Cuts-Only Editing Description Assemble Editing Instructions Voice Over Instructions 1

Preparation 1. Before you begin, prepare a shot list of your edits. 2. Watch your playback tapes one at a time on a VCR with a time counter. 3. Write down the precise beginning and ending time of each edit you want to perform. 4. After all the playback tapes have an accurate shot list, transfer the information to a new sheet in the order you want all edits to occur in the finished product. 5. If you are working with more than one tape, be sure to indicate which tape you are working from on the shot list. 2

Lay a Control Track Assemble editing is much more reliable on a tape which has a control track. Unpredictable results will occur if you work on a blank tape. Video and especially audio signals stay on the tape better if a control track is used. To save time when editing, complete this step at home on your own VCR. Even a prerecorded tape with a program on it will work. If your home machine cannot record a blank control track, record a program instead. 1. Insert a blank tape into the record VCR (right machine). 2. Press Record on the VCR and record for as long as the finished tape will be. 3

Cuts-Only Editing Instructions This equipment will allow you to program eight edits at a time. To begin learning this process, just do one edit at a time! As you become more familiar with the system, you may wish to program more than one edit at a time. Because of tape slippage, it is recommended that you only do a maximum of four edits at a time. 1. Insert the tape with the material to be edited into the left VCR. 2. Make sure that the record tape has its plastic record tab in place (or put a piece of tape over it), and it is completely rewound. 4

Assemle Editing Instructions 1. Press the Player button to select the playback VCR. 2. Press the Programme button to select Program 1. (Make sure you see a one on the LCD screen.) 5

3. Make sure the Shuttle ring is at the 12 o clock position and press the Jog/Shuttle button. (Press this button again if it does not produce a still picture.) 4. Use the Shuttle Ring and the Jog Dial to search on the playback VCR for the point where you want the editing to begin. Make sure the Shuttle Ring and the Jog Button are at 12 o clock when you find the correct point on the tape. 5. Press the Mark In button. (The start point is now set and you should see that on the LCD screen.) 6. Use the Shuttle Ring and the Jog Dial to search on the playback VCR for the point where you want the edit to end. Make sure the Shuttle Ring and Jog Button are returned to the 12 o clock position. 7. Press the Mark Out button. (The end point is now set and you should see that on the LCD screen.) 6

8. Press the Recorder button. (At the first edit only, press the Jog/Shuttle button and jog forward 30 seconds to prepare a lead on the tape.) 9. Use the Shuttle Ring and the Jog Dial to search on the record VCR for the point where you want the editing to start. Make sure the Shuttle Ring and Jog Button are returned to the 12 o clock position. 10. Press the Mark In button. 11. Press the Assemble button. (The editing system is now in Assemble Editing mode.) 12. Press and hold the Edit Start button and Preview button at the same time. (The editing starts.) 7

13. This will take a few moments while the machinery seeks the spots stored in memory for the edit and copies the appropriate sections. 14. After the record VCR Record Light goes off and the editing stops, press the Stop button to release the Assemble Editing mode. 15. Press the Clear button and begin the process again for the next edit. 8

Voice Over Instructions 1. Complete all edits. 2. Que the final tape to the starting point of the first voice over. 3. Insert a microphone into the jack on the front of the VCR labeled MIC. 4. Press the button labeled Audio Dub. 5. Press the Play button to start the voice over. 6. When finished press the Stop button. 7. Review the section of tape where the voice over was just recorded. 8. Repeat the above steps for additional voice overs. 9
