1 Change H.264 export settings Posted by filmoy - 10 Mar :07 This might be a silly question but, as I don't know what I'm doing, any advice would be gratefully received! I am using Lightworks (free) to edit my first ever bit of DSLR footage. I've done my edit but the exported video looks pretty terrible (the colours are faded, the darks are brighter, the contrast is gone). I've been researching online since yesterday to find a solution. It appears that the problem may be something to do with H.264's incorrect handling of Gamma during the export render. My research seems to suggest that altering the H.264 settings and/ or using an additional/ alternative x264, may solve the problem (not that any of this means anything to me at the moment). Does this mean anything to any Lightworks users? If so, is there a way to do something so that the resulting exported video looks like what's in Lightworks prior to export? Thanks. Posted by donkpow - 10 Mar :41 The export from the free version of Lightworks has limited bitrate and is fixed. Not bad but not great. If you go with the paid version, you will have more export options that are less compressed and with a higher bitrate. I would go into the color correction tools, make some adjustments, export a short marked section, and have a look at it. Rinse and repeat until it looks good to you. I therefore asked the question on this forum, in as much detail as I possibly could, to seek a solution. Thanks Posted by donkpow - 10 Mar :59 The preview image you are seeing in Lightworks is the uncompressed source file. Export is a preset called YouTube export. So the bitrate and other H264 parameters are preset, you don't have control over the parameters of encoding. When you have the paid version of Lightworks, you can export an uncompressed version of your edit and perform an encode of your liking with an external encoder. Why I recommend to export a color corrected clip from your edit to evaluate is that you may be able to offset the negative effects of the encode. Posted by filmoy - 10 Mar :28 Thanks. 3 example, if you intend to export from Lightworks in 1280x720 (the highest resolution available in the free version), record in 1280x720. The scaling operation does reduce quality a little. Editing and exporting from a highly compressed MP4 AVC format will result in significant loss in quality compared to exporting from a high bit rate DI grade codec like Prores. Shifts in gamma on export can also result from your computer video settings and monitor color calibration being off. What computer platform are you editing on? What video card, what kind of monitor? Gamma shifts from Macs are common unless you set your video monitor color space to SRGB, the web standard color space. In terms of my computer and monitor colour settings etc. these have remained constant throughout the edit and subsequent viewing of the exported file. So, if the footage looks ok in Lightworks but then looks shoddy on the four different media players I tried then wouldn't that indicate the problem lies elsewhere and not with the monitor and computer? I'm using a pc to edit and have a full HD monitor. Don't really understand what you mean by "high bit rate DI grade". Means nothing to a novice like me! Is there anything I need to do or can do to improve my exported footage? Or do I need to change anything else? Many thanks. This will create a much larger file, but it is a full frame lightly compressed video format better for editing and finishing. Check your project video settings: 6 / 9

The files were bigger as you said, about ten times bigger! I did a test edit using the larger, transcoded files. I then exported. The weird thing is, despite all this I still ended up with a degraded image (compared to what I am seeing within Lightworks). This leads me to believe that, not only am I facing a gamma shift, but in addition to this I am also getting very noticable degradation (saturation, sharpness, contrast, brightness, everything!) which seems to point to the compression - the default (and only available) export settings in the free version of Lightworks must have low bit rates combined with huge compression with the H.264 codec. So, even with transcoded, high quality footage, the export still remains poor. I am guessing the only possible way forward is to upgrade to the paid version. I am assuming that, if one does this, one of the other export options will match the quality of the export as it appears within Lightworks. Does all of the above match your/ other user's understanding? Of course, if I've missed anything, ie. anything else I might still be able to try with the free version, I'd welcome getting some advice/ pointers! Appreciate everyone's input. Posted by Craig Marshall - 11 Mar :38 I think the last time I tested the LW Free Youtube bitrate with Mediainfo it was around 8Mbps - not so bad as to cause your issues but I usually export from LW (Pro) at the highest possible quality setting 7 / 9

8 (say, 10bit DPX or TIFF Image Sequence) then use ClipToolz to make the final Deliveries to Vimeo or BD. (around 20 and 40Mbps respectively) I suggest you check your source files first or you could take a short 'monthly' upgrade to pro to test your workflow chain. PS: You really need to have some form of 'proven reference' monitoring if you are serious about colour and quality because there are just too many variables in the common PC/Mac chain. Posted by David Rasberry - 11 Mar :08 Play the transcoded matrox MPEG file and the 720P export in your local VLC player to see if you see the same shift between those. If you do, it is a likely video card/monitor calibration issue. Are you saving the YT H.264 exported file on your PC? If they all look good locally then it is a YT issue. I have not had issues with the standard 720p YT export option to my free Vimeo account. It is the same in the free and pro versions. You need to make sure your monitor is set to SRGB color space in your video card management and under the monitor menu. There is a guided visual calibration routine in the Windows advanced display settings menu too. Posted by RWAV - 11 Mar :32 'Scaling' tends to be the operation generating the greatest quality loss, this includes any scaling by a viewing monitor. As have others I've tested the LW free YouTube setting and found it very good as a 720p output. Could you please - 1) Post a media info analysis of your output file as produced by LW, not as uploaded from YouTube. 2) play your LW output file in, say VLC media Player - with the player set to the file's native resolution - selecting video size at 100% in VLC should do that. How does that look? 3) Reimport the file into LW - how does it look in a LW viewer, again scaled to file dimensions - which can be done by dragging the viewer size and watching the size display in the top left hand corner of the 8 / 9
