2 Signing Up The State Victim Assistance Academy Resource Center Chatter group is a private group limited to State Victim Assistance Academy Administrators and other stakeholders. To join you must receive an invite. If you think you should have one and have not yet received one, you can request your invite by ing the group s technical administrator, Sam Webster, at swebster@victimsofcrime.org. Once you get your invite, you ll see an that looks like this: Open the and click on Join Now: 2

3 Join now will take you to a page where you will need to enter your first name, last name, and company name. The company name will show on your profile. Including your organization will help us better understand the needs of our members and help members network more effectively. The field will automatically populate with the address at which you received the invitation. You can change this if you d like. Click Next to finish setting up your account. You ll be prompted to enter a password, a security question, and the question s answer.!! IMPORTANT: Pay special note to the Username as indicated on the following screenshot!! 3

4 You will not be logging into Chatter with your work , but rather with your assigned Username. This will be in the format of Write down this username address for future reference. You re registration is now complete! Login to Chatter at any time by visiting this link: 4

5 Accessing Chatter Now that you have an account, let s talk about using chatter. You have two ways of doing so. On Your Computer On your computer, you can access Chatter by going to or by navigating directly to the Chatter group at Once there you will be prompted to login with your username. (Remember, this will likely be in the format of username@guest.ncvc.org.) This will take you to your feed. From your feed you can view group activity but cannot post directly. To post, you first must navigate to the SVAA Chatter Group by: (1) clicking SVAA Chatter where it appears next to someone else s post, or (2) clicking Groups on the left sidebar to pull up a list of groups of which you are a member. Then select the SVAA Chatter Group. (See the screenshot below for guidance.)!! IMPORTANT: You must navigate to the SVAA Chatter Group before you will be able to take any action.!! The screenshot below shows the first screen you will see after logging in your Chatter feed, a compilation of recent activity in your groups. Navigate to the SVAA Chatter Group in order to post. Once you have navigated to the group, you should see the option to post, add files, and otherwise engage and interact with the community.

6 On Your Smartphone You can also use Chatter from your smartphone. Chatter can be accessed two ways on your smartphone. 1. As a Native Downloadable App from the iphone App Store or from Google Play. To get this, search for Salesforce 1 and download the app to your phone. This only works with iphones and with Google Android phones. 2. As a Mobile Browser App (basically a highly mobile optimized version of the website). Salesforce s mobile site app is available on the following platforms: Apple Safari browser on ipad 2 and later models (including the ipad mini) and iphone 4 and later models, with ios 7 or later BlackBerry Browser on BlackBerry Z10 devices with BlackBerry OS 10.2 or later and BlackBerry Z30 devices with BlackBerry OS or later. (Salesforce1 isn't supported on BlackBerry Q10 devices.) Google Chrome browser on Android phones with Android 4.2 or later. Good Access secure mobile browser on Android phones with Android 4.2 or later and on Apple mobile devices with ios 7 or later. Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 browser on Nokia Lumia 1020 and HTC 8X phones with Windows 8.1. (Salesforce1 isn't supported on mobile phones with Windows 8.0 or on Windows tablets.) No matter which option you choose, you will then be asked to login to Salesforce. You can login using the username you were assigned at registration and the password you entered. (Remember, this username will likely be in the format of username@guest.ncvc.org.) If you are signing in with the Salesforce 1 App, you will need to verify your account the first time you sign in. You will see the screen to the right: 6

7 You will receive an with a verification code (see the screenshot below). Type that verification code into the verification box to gain access to the app. Salesforce will then ask you for access to your basic information, and for the ability to provide access to data via the web. This is safe and only relates to Salesforce related data. Click Allow. 7

8 This will take you to your feed. From here, you must navigate to the SVAA Chatter Group before you will be able to post, though you will be able to view group activity on this screen. To do so, click SVAA Chatter where it appears next to someone else s post. (See the screenshot below for additional guidance. The green arrows will guide you to the group.)!! IMPORTANT: You must navigate to the SVAA Chatter Group before you will be able to take any action.!! The screenshot below shows your feed when you first login. You must click to the SVAA Chatter Group before you will be able to post. Once in the group, you will be able to post, add files, and manage your notifications as usual. 8

9 Using Chatter Once you have an account and are logged in, Chatter works a lot like a stripped down version of Facebook. You have the ability to post a status, comment or like someone else s post, post a file, send someone a direct message, and search the group. This allows us to use Chatter to network, facilitate communication, and share files and ideas. Posting Make sure you are viewing the Chatter Group and not your feed. From there, simply type your post into the bar at the top of the screen and click Share. You can mention other users in posts to get their attention, and they will be notified when you make the post. Do so by typing their name after sign. For Webster. If you re responding to someone else s post, make sure to comment on that post, instead of starting a new post. This helps keep discussions organized so information is easy to find. Like or Comment This works just like Facebook, or many other social networks. Comment and Like buttons are located beneath every post. Click Comment to bring up a box where you can respond to someone else s post. You can also attach files to someone else s post. Share a File To share a file, click File next to Post at the top of the screen. You will be asked to upload a file from your computer. You can only attach one file at a time, so you ll need share multiple files separately, or combine them into one before you upload it. Search and Organize Your Feed Underneath the Share Post box there are options where you can control your view. You can change what updates you see on your feed or what order you see them in. You can view All Updates or Fewer Updates (which will only show what Chatter thinks to be the most important updates), and you can organize by Latest Posts or by Most Recent Activity (which may include comments and other activity). You can also search past posts by clicking on the magnifying glass if you re looking for a particular discussion. Send a Direct Message To send a direct message, navigate to the person s profile page by clicking on their name in the feed, or clicking Show All next to members on the right-hand side of your screen. From there, locate the Send a Message button in the top right corner. Messages sent through Send a Message will appear only to the message recipients and not to the larger group. If someone has sent you a message, it will appear on the left-hand side of your feed. 9

10 Changing your Notifications Chatter will notify you of new activity in accordance with your notification settings. To access these settings, click the dropdown menu next to your name in the top right of the screen and select My Settings. Then click Settings. The Default notification setting is to receive a daily digest of all activity related to you, including when someone comments on a post you made, sends you a message, or mentions you in a post. You can change this to a weekly digest or to be notified at every post. You can also change which actions trigger notifications. Need Help?
