1 1 ELSEVIER REFERENCE MODULES EDITORIAL-PRODUCTION SYSTEM (EPS) AUTHOR GUIDE Introduction This document is designed as a comprehensive help resource for authors using the EPS interface to submit original or updated material to Elsevier Reference Modules. For further support and any other enquiries about the authoring workflow, please contact the Project Manager. Receiving an authoring request You will have received an invitation from the Subject Editor of a Reference Module to submit material: if you have been chosen to write a completely new piece of work for the module. if you have been chosen to update a piece of work previously written or co-authored by yourself for the module. Logging in to EPS You can log in to the system in one of the two following ways: selecting the link to accept the invitation to write / revise content in your initial invitation . navigating to in your web browser if you already have an account on the system. You will be taken to the EPS login screen. If you have forgotten your password, selecting the Forgot your password? link will allow you to input your address and receive an with a hyperlink to Reset Your Password.
2 2 The Author Dashboard After you log in, you will be directed to your Author Dashboard. Tabs The Sign Out button allows you to sign out of EPS. The My Account button allows you to make changes to your EPS account details (see My Account Tabs below). The Home tab, includes welcome text and shows all items currently in the Authoring Workqueue. The Archive tab shows a list of chapters you have previously submitted. Authoring Workqueue: Current assignments are shown in the Authoring Workqueue. Clicking on any item in the queue will take you to further details on that item and allow you to take any necessary action. The queue can be sorted by Most Recent status or Due Date by using the appropriate buttons on the right. Each of the four columns in the workqueue can also be used to sort the items within the queue by clicking on the column header, once for descending order, twice for ascending order. An item marked with a red exclamation mark has passed its due date. Workqueue Action Statuses Invitation Pending Awaiting response to invitation Contract Phase Awaiting response to author contract Update / Create Item Edit previously authored content / upload new content
3 3 Technical Assessment Item is with Technical Assessor for checking chapter completeness Review Submission Item is being reviewed by Subject Editor Awaiting Confirmation from ScienceDirect Item has been accepted for publication My Account Tabs: The My Profile tab allows you to update your details and to specify whether you are a government employee of the USA, UK, Australia, Canada or none of these. Select Save when you have completed your changes. o For changes to your address, please contact the Project Manager to have these reflected in your account. The Change Password tab allows you to set a new password to log in to your account. Select Save when you have completed your changes. The Authoring Process Step by Step NOTE: You will receive notification via from the Subject Editor that you have been invited to submit new content / update existing content. 1. Return your response to the invitation via or via the hyperlink in the invitation If you have responded via , log in to EPS to accept the invitation.
4 4 3. Select the content item you want to work on from the Authoring Workqueue (status will be Invitation pending). 4. Accept or reject the Invitation: 5. If invitation is accepted, accept or reject (with a reason) the Author Contract. Refer to the Instructions for Authors to write your chapter. When you have completed work on your chapter, log back into EPS to upload it. 6. Select the content item you want to work on from the Authoring Workqueue (status will be Update/create item). 7. If this is a pre-existing piece of work to be revised, please refer to the reviewer comments. Use the File Upload / Browse button to upload all files associated with your submission, or to access the files of a chapter which has been reviewed. If you need to delete any files, you can use the trashcan icon, which will appear by the details of the uploaded file.
5 8. Use the Correspondence box to make any notes about your submission which might be useful for the editor / project manager. 5

If you need to contact the project manager, a Message PM button is available which will open a new screen where you can write a message which will be sent to the PM. o NOTE: If you select the Message PM button, you will lose any files you have uploaded or text input in the correspondence box. 10. Select the Cancel button to go back to the Author Dashboard without saving your work. 11. Select the Submit button to submit your chapter for review. 12. Once submitted, the status of your chapter in the Authoring Workqueue will be Technical Assessment. If your item is reviewed and is found to be in need of revision, you will be informed of this. Log in to the system and repeat this process from step 6. Once your item has been accepted for publication, the status of your item in the Authoring Workqueue will initially show as Awaiting Confirmation from ScienceDirect. Once this stage is completed, the status will change to In Production, and the item will transfer to the Archive tab on the Author Dashboard. Thank you very much for writing this chapter.
