1 An Introduction to Blackboard This document provides instructions on navigating Blackboard and utilizing its features. Check out for more information and to view short videos showing more about accessing the topics below. Atomic Learning ( and lynda.com ( also have numerous video tutorials available on using Blackboard. To log into Blackboard, go to Log in with your NetID and password. Navigating Course Content After logging into Blackboard, you will see My Courses, listing the courses in which you are enrolled. Click the course to view its Blackboard. The Home Page contains announcements posted by instructors, tasks, a calendar, and more. Note: Assignments do NOT always appear in the What s Due box, always refer to the syllabus and your instructor to verify assignments. Information Technology Services, UIS 1

2 On the left of the screen is the navigation pane. Click the links to view more information about the listed topic. Simply click the link on the navigation pane to access the corresponding information. Instructors can customize these buttons, so they may differ among courses. Many instructors will post their syllabus under Course Information or Course Documents or Syllabus. Click the link of the attached file to open and view the syllabus. Working with Discussion Boards Discussion Boards may be used in your course for discussing class material with other students and participation. Information Technology Services, UIS 2

3 Read a description of the discussion View total posts, new posts, and the number of participants To use the Discussion Board, 1. Click the title of the discussion under the Forum column. 2. Click the Thread you wish to respond to. If you would like to create an entirely new thread, click Create Thread. This will place your post directly on this screen. 3. At the top of the screen will be a list of the responses made to the main post. Bold responses correspond to posts that you have not yet read. Click the responses to read those posts. Below, you will read the original post. To respond to the post, click Reply. The Reply button is located in various areas; you are able to click on any of them to Information Technology Services, UIS 3

4 reply to the post that appears in the bottom screen. Verify the title of the post and the author 4. To enter your post, type in the Message box, or Attach a file to attach a document in which you typed your response. Click Submit to post your response to the Discussion Board. Type your response in the text box, or copy and paste from another document. 5. To show more features for writing your thread or reply, click the arrow button on the right side of your blank message. 5 6. Highlighted below are some of the main features of the message box you may wish to use. Click to attach a file or insert an image. Click the link icon to insert a hyperlink. * To add a hyperlink, you must first type the URL, highlight it, then click the link button. a. When inserting an image or attaching a file, after clicking the icon, click Browse My Computer to find the desired file. Click Insert. b. After clicking Submit, the attached file(s) will appear in the message. If you selected an image, the image will appear directly in the message. If you chose to attach a file, it will appear as a link that other viewers can click on to open. Information Technology Services, UIS 5

6 7. After submitting your post, it will appear on the Discussion Board as a response to the original post. Original thread Reply 8. Next to the Submit button is a Save Draft option. You can save a draft of your assignment or post before you are ready to actually submit it. This gives you the ability to continue working on a post in the future and pick up where you left off. 9. The post will now appear under the responses of the discussion, but will have (draft) next to it. Please note that discussion boards are not private conversations between you and the instructor; the entire class can read and reply to postings. Information Technology Services, UIS 6

7 10. Click Edit to continue working on the post. Save the draft as many times as you wish until ready to submit. Working with Assignments Your instructors may choose to require you to submit assignments on Blackboard in the form of a post. When an assignment is posted, it will appear next to the icon shown below. 1. To complete an assignment, click the link next to the icon. 2. You can either write a submission in the same manner as writing a discussion post or browse your computer for your assignment and attach it. 3. You may want to add comments about your assignment, which you can do in the Add Comments box. After you have either written your assignment or attached it, click Information Technology Services, UIS 7

8 Submit. Add comments in the space provided here Working with Quizzes & Tests Instructors may choose to have students complete tests and/or quizzes on Blackboard. The test or quiz will appear next to the icon shown below. 1. To take the quiz or test, click the link next to the icon. 2. Read the instructions carefully, then click Begin to start. 3. Click to mark your answer to the question, then click Save Answer. 4. When you have completed the test/quiz, click Save and Submit. Information Technology Services, UIS 8

9 Note: If you try submitting without saving the answer to a question(s), Blackboard will notify you of the unanswered question(s); be sure to go back and answer them. 5. Confirm the submission, and then click OK at the bottom right corner of the following screen to view results. For some exams including short answer or essay questions, results may not be available right away. 6. The results will appear as listed below. If you click on the link to the quiz/test again, you will be directed to this screen (you will not be able to re-take the quiz/test unless designated by your instructor). Checking Grades To check grades in Blackboard, Information Technology Services, UIS 9

10 1. On the course navigation bar on the left of the page, click My Grades. 2. The assignments will be listed along your grade and possible points. Some instructors will choose to include the average, median, and/or comments. Submitted assignments that have not yet been graded will also be listed. Sending within Blackboard To send an within Blackboard, Information Technology Services, UIS 10
