Someone using bad online manners might type in all capital letters (that is yelling on the Internet) and type mean comments. Have children list some bad online manners. Then, have them brainstorm their own list of good netiquette rules. NetSmartz teaches children not to respond to bad online behavior. Instead, they should try to stay calm and tell a trusted adult. Brainstorm ways of not responding to cyberbullying with children. Also, look into reporting options. Many websites, especially online games and virtual worlds, have reporting functions. If a child is being bullied by a classmate, the school may be able to step in. 9 Typing in All CAPS Mini Activity Use this activity to explain why typing in all caps when speaking to others online is an example of bad netiquette. You will need a computer and a room with a closed door---this activity could get noisy! Show children where the Caps Lock key is on a keyboard, what it does, and why we use it (e.g., typing acronyms). Type a few sentences in a word processing program, and then type the same sentences in all caps. Ask children to read both and decide which is easier to read. Say to children: It s rude to type in all caps when you re talking to others online also means they re yelling. Yelling at others online is bad netiquette because it s rude. Pick two children to pretend to talk to each other online as if their Caps Lock keys were on. Have them greet each other and try to carry on a normal conversation about their day while yelling. Say to children: C A P S

10 Using Smiley Faces & Emoticons Mini Activity Use this activity to familiarize children with emoticons. You will need the list of common smiley faces/emoticons (below), construction paper, crayons, and tape. Look over the list of smiley faces/emoticons with children. Depending on the size of your group, you can either share one list or print one for each child. Ask the children explain how the second column shows what that smiley face would look like if you typed it on a keyboard. Continue identifying the remaining emotions. Answers: happy, sad, angry, confused, and shocked. Say to children: When you are online, the people you re talking to can t see your face, Now ask the children to use construction paper and crayons to make their own smiley face and/or emoticon. Tape them up to create a wall of emoticons. Have the children try to guess what emotion each new emoticon represents. Common Smiley Faces & Emoticons Smiley Faces Emoticon : ) : ( X ( :-S :-o Emotion?

11 The Spread of Bad Netiquette Mini Activity Use this activity to emphasize how bad netiquette can spread online. You will need goggles, masking tape, two 8-oz cups, ½ teaspoon of powdered laundry detergent, ½ teaspoon of baking soda, stirrers, vinegar, water, and green food dye (optional). This activity can be done by children in pairs or as a group demonstration. It should be done in a sink or on a tray. Use the masking tape to label one cup Internet and the other Bad Netiquette. Mix ½ teaspoon of powdered laundry detergent and 2 ounces of vinegar in the cup labeled Internet. Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda, 2 ounces of water, and food dye in the cup labeled Bad Netiquette. Say to children: bad netiquette is all over the Internet, just like this Place the Internet cup on the tray; pour in the contents of Bad Netiquette. The solution will immediately begin to foam over the cup. Say to children: Answers: don t type mean or rude comments; tell people when you are joking so that you do not hurt their feelings; don t use all caps, because that is yelling online, etc. ette iqu t Ne Ba d te et qu Ba d N et i
