3 rd TF-Netcast Meeting 14 May 2003 via H.323 video conference Issue 1, 16 May 2003 Author: Baiba Kaskina, Dan Mønster Participants: Alessandro Falaschi University of Roma Franca Fiumana CINECA Ernst Heiri SWITCH Apostolos Karakoussis GRNET Baiba Kaskina TERENA Leif Laaksonen CSC Dan Mønster UNI-C Hanne Moa UNINETT Harri Salminen CSC / Funet-TV Andres Steijaert SURFnet Magnus Strømdal UNINETT Egon Verharen SURFnet Steve Williams University of Wales Swansea Apologies: Michal Krsek CESNET 1. Welcome and roll call Ernst welcomed the participants who had joined the video conference hosted by SWITCH. Dan informed the group that Michal would not attend the meeting because he was at the RIPE meeting in Barcelona and had problems with the videoconferencing on his laptop. 2. Agenda bashing No changes to the agenda were made. 3. Status of actions and deliverables Actions from the previous meeting: 2.1. To send the questionnaire for users survey to the tf-netcast mailing list Leif - DONE
2.2. To send the input about the metadata model research to the project schedule Egon - DONE 2.3. To send the collected links and information about the resources for content production to the mailing list Apostolos - DONE 2.4. To send the presentation and the additional information from the annual SURA/ViDe digital video workshop to the tf-netcast mailing list Dan - DONE - Dan noted that his presentation was not available as video-ondemand. Only the questions and answers after his presentation were available in the web. After the last meeting there was the deadline for the deliverable E, Apostolos had delivered it on time. 4. Discussion on deliverable B (Survey and questionnaire) Dan gave a short overview on the status of the questionnaire. There were 31 responses to it as to the last night. As Andres was expecting a larger number of responses, the participants agreed to extend the deadline for the answers to the end of May Everybody was asked to send the reminder to their community in order to get more responses. Egon agreed to send the invitation to participate in the survey to the ViDe mailing list. Andres and Egon promised to mention the survey in their presentations at the TERENA Networking Conference (TCN) 2003 in Zagreb, which hopefully would attract more respondents. ACTION 3.1: Andres - to send the reminder to the TF-Netcast mailing list. ACTION 3.2: Egon - to send the invitation to respond to the questionnaire to the ViDe mailing list. ACTION 3.3: Andres and Egon - to mention the survey in their presentations at the TNC 2003 in Zagreb. Andres asked Dan about the geographical distribution of the survey s respondents. Dan agreed to get this information from his colleagues. Dan and Andres would cooperate with Dan's colleagues on the analysis of the results as well. Later Andres would prepare the report on the survey. ACTION 3.4: Dan - to get the geographical distribution of the survey s respondents and send it to the mailing list. Dan provoked the discussion about the end users part of the survey. He doubted about the availability of necessary resources to gather the end users opinion. Although he
thought that their opinion could be a very valuable contribution to the deliverable B, Leif agreed that it would be important, but as the deadline of the deliverable B is the end of June 2003 he proposed focusing on the results of the existing questionnaire. If there are available resources later, then it would be possible to get the end users opinion. Dan was not very optimistic about the postponing this issue but no other decision was reached. 5. Discussion on deliverable E (Information about resources for content production) Dan gave an overview of the status of the deliverable E. Apostolos had circulated several drafts of it and the final deliverable have been put in the web. Unfortunately there were not very much contributions and feedback from the TF-Netcast community. Dan said that he expected having more qualitative material in the "Best Practices/Tutorials" section of the deliverable. As good examples he mentioned the SURFnet Content Production Guide and the RedIris Guide "Creating Conference Rooms". Apostolos agreed with him and said that it was difficult to find the qualitative content. Everyone was encouraged to submit all the materials they knew about. Dan mentioned that UNI-C in collaboration with several universities in Denmark is making something similar i.e. didactic and technical guidelines for using video in teaching. This document would be in Danish. He asked if there was any interest in collaborating on this issue. Unfortunately no interest was expressed. Dan asked whether SURFnet would keep their content production guide up to date and whether there were any plans to translate it into English. Egon replied that the document would be updated but they had no plans to translate it. Andres asked whether TERENA could support the translation. Baiba would investigate this issue. ACTION 3.5: Baiba - to investigate whether TERENA could support the translation of the SURFnet Content Production Guide into English. Dan mentioned that ViDe was working on a streaming media cookbook and asked Egon whether he (as a member of ViDe) had any information about it. Egon replied that the cookbook was delayed and he would notify the list when it is ready. The cookbook was in an alpha version and Egon was not sure whether it would contain the material relevant for the content production. Egon mentioned that the University of Washington had some material about producing content for HDTV, which might not have significant relevance, but he agreed to send a link of this material to the mailing list. ACTION 3.6: Egon - to send the link of the material from the University of Washington to the TF-Netcast mailing list.
6. Discussion on deliverable F (Live streaming infrastructure) Alessandro informed the participants about the current status of the deliverable F. He had submitted several drafts of the theoretical document for this deliverable and would like to get the feedback from the list. He explained the general architecture, referring to the figures that he sent to the mailing list the day before this meeting. Dan asked Alessandro about the IETF CDI working group activities regarding the terminology and implementation issues. Alessandro responded that he was following the activities of this working group, but their setup and preconditions were different from the TF-Netcast situation. Therefore it would be possible to collaborate but not to adapt their solutions. Regarding the pilot project for the deliverable F the participants agreed to start implementing it using ISMA MPEG-4 streaming with the Darwin Streaming server. The following people agreed to participate in the pilot project by contributing their server resources: Harri Salminen (CSC), Egon Verharen (SURFnet), Dan Mønster (UNI-C), Apostolos Karakoussis (GRNET), Franca Fiumana (CINECA). The pilot project would start in September, Alessandro would write the theoretical part during the summer. Egon told the participants about the setup used to stream from the RIPE meeting in Barcelona. There was a server in REDIris that picked up the stream from the conference s venue and distributed it to 7 Windows Media servers around Europe i.e. Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Spain and the UK. This setup gave a total capacity of eight to nine thousand concurrent streams. Egon would write a document describing the setup and send it to the list. Dan proposed including this as a TF-Netcast activity since almost all the contributed servers were from the TF-Netcast community. He asked people whether they would be interested in setting up a more permanent infrastructure based on this setup. That could be an addition to the Darwin streaming servers pilot project. Egon said that TF-Netcast could use the technology that was used in the Netherlands where the surrogate server was chosen based on a look-up of the client IP address in the RIPE database. Franca added that they had done something similar in Italy and had significant speed up of the database lookup by using the cached copy of the RIPE database. Franca also noted that TF-Netcast community could set up a channel for each country (or for each origin server) so that it would not be necessary to configure manually the mount points each time. Egon added that they were using the NetCache stream splitter instead of the Windows Media Server and that this setup demanded even less maintenance.
Alessandro asked if Egon and Franca could provide him with more information on this technology, so that he could include it in the deliverable. Steve gave a short overview of the UKERNA s content delivery pilot project. This pilot was focusing on the video-on-demand rather than on the live streaming. They were using two platforms, i.e. Kasenna MediaBase and RealNetworks' Helix and two formats i.e. QuickTime and MPEG-4 in two qualities i.e. 700 Kbit/s and 1.5 Mbit/s. Steve would send some presentations that describe the project to the TF-Netcast mailing list. ACTION 3.7: Egon - to submit the best practices document based on the RIPE meeting streaming to the mailing list. ACTION 3.8: Egon and Franca - to submit the contributions to the deliverable F about the the live streaming based on Windows Media to the mailing list. ACTION 3.9: Steve - to submit the presentations about the UKERNA CDN pilot to the mailing list. 7. Discussion on deliverable D (Prototype announcement portal) Since Michal could not participate, Dan briefly relayed a message from Michal. He informed the participants that Michal was waiting for the results of the metadata study (deliverable C). After receiving them he could change the internal metadata format for the portal. Later CESNET would start working on the development of different ways than the current web based form to submit the information to the portal i.e. , SAP harvest. Magnus said that they would like to collaborate with CESNET on the development of the SAP harvester since they had already implemented that feature in the UNINETT s Electronic Streaming Guide. Hanne noted that the development of SAP packets filtering took a lot of time and resources, therefore it would be easier for CESNET to adapt the UNINETT s implementation. 8. Any other business 8.1. Regarding the deliverable C, Egon said that he had collected information about all the metadata models and noted that there was a new activity in the IETF MMUSIC working group related to the Internet Media Guides. There was a general consensus that it would be a good idea to align with the IETF activity. Dan said that he had already forwarded some drafts on this issue to the mailing list. Egon emphasized that those drafts were only about the general architecture and there was other activities on details of the metadata model on the MMUSIC mailing list. It was agreed to follow the activities of the MMUSIC working group. As the Internet Draft could not be expected soon enough to adapt it for the TF-Netcast, changes of
the format could be expected when the MMUSIC working group would publish an RFC Baiba noted that she had been appointed as the responsible person in TERENA for the TF-Netcast task force and Valentino as the substitute Alessandro asked the participants who would be going to Zagreb for TERENA Network Conference (TNC) 2003 next week. The following people will be there: Alessandro, Egon, Andres, Baiba, Valentino, Dan, Steve and Michal. Dan informed the participants that he would present TF-Netcast on the (closed) TAC meeting in TNC Egon and Andres would mention TF-Netcast in their presentations as well. 9. Date and time of next meeting The next meeting will be held via H.323 video conference on the 18 th of June 2003 from 1:00 PM to (approximately) 3:00 PM CET (GMT+2). Ernst Heiri will once again host the meeting on the SWITCH MCU. 10. Actions list 3.1. Andres - to send the reminder to the TF-Netcast mailing list Egon - to send the invitation to respond to the questionnaire to the ViDe mailing list Andres and Egon - to mention the survey in their presentations at the TNC 2003 in Zagreb Dan - to get the geographical distribution of the survey s respondents and send it to the mailing list Baiba - to investigate whether TERENA could support the translation of the SURFnet Content Production Guide into English Egon - to send the link of the material from the University of Washington to the TF- Netcast mailing list Egon - to submit the best practices document based on the RIPE meeting streaming to the mailing list Egon and Franca - to submit the contributions to the deliverable F about the live streaming based on the Windows Media to the mailing list Steve - to submit the presentations about the UKERNA CDN pilot to the mailing list.
