3 Large Scale SSIM Deployment SSIM in Correlation & Directory Role SSIM in Archiving Only Role SSIM in Archiving Only Role SSIM in Collection Only Role SSIM in Collection Only Role SSIM in Collection Only Role Monitored Devices Monitored Devices Monitored Devices Off Box Agent Off Box Agent Symantec Security Information Manager in a Large Scale Deployment In the above typical large scale SSIM deployment, collection servers monitor and collect logs from various devices using Symantec Event Collectors and agents technology. Once the collection server accepts the events from sources, it performs data enrichment in the form of appending additional event fields like Effects, Mechanisms and Resources to the event collected from the device. This additional data is later used during correlation for accurate incident generation and reducing the false positives. The collection server hands over those events to the archive server. The archive server stores them on disk in compressed format and in parallel forwards the events to the correlation server. The correlation server evaluates events against each rule in a sequential manner for any incident identification. The correlation server accordingly stores and updates incidents in the database for incident management. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 6 of 31

3.1 Planning individual deployment Symantec Security Information Manager is a scalable solution that meets the needs of businesses of all sizes. Each environment is unique, and requires careful consideration of the event, incident, and storage handling needs for that environment. Symantec provides documentation in form of the SSIM Deployment & Planning Guide and the Sizing tool which can be used to plan individual deployments Different roles of SSIM server in a large scale deployment Below are different roles in which SSIM Servers are deployed in a large scale deployment. SSIM collection server Monitors and collect logs from various devices using Symantec Event collectors and agent technology. Collectors can be present on the SSIM Collection Server as well as on Agent(s) installed on a separate non SSIM machines. A SSIM Collection server collects data from Agent and performs data enrichment. The enrichment is in the form of appending additional event fields like Effect, Mechanisms and Resources to the event collected from the devices. The collection server hands over those events to archive server. SSIM Archive server Stores events on disk in compressed format and in parallel forwards the events to the correlation server. Correlation server Evaluates events against each rule in sequential manner for incident identification The correlation server accordingly stores and updates incidents in the database for incident management. 8 4 SSIM Collection and Archiving Server This section explains role of SSIM Collection and Archiving servers. This section also discusses how a SSIM deployment can be scaled to meet the need for monitoring a larger number of devices with a large amount of data being generated. This Section describes how, and in which situation, the number of SSIM Collection and Archiving servers deployed can be scaled to help monitor larger number devices & data. In the following sections, this document will discuss tools built into SSIM to monitor the current deployment performance and identify when deployment is reaching its limit. 4.1 Objective of SSIM collection and archiving server role Symantec Security Information Manager's event collection and archiving features help customers comply with regulatory policies. In a small environment, a single SSIM Server can perform the role of SSIM Collection, Archiving, and Correlation. As the size of the environment or number of monitored devices grows, separate SSIM Servers for collection purpose is recommended to help in scaling the SSIM Deployment. A SSIM Collection Server will collect & normalize events before sending it to a central SSIM Archiving server. A separate SSIM Collection server frees up resources used for event collection and processing (Normalization process) which can be used for archiving. A dedicated SSIM Archiving server can serve multiple SSIM Collection Servers and perform archiving at a higher EPS (Events Per Second). 4.2 Separate collection server(s) to help scale deployment A separate SSIM Server for the collection role is recommended in situations when Event Sources are geographically distributed Separate SSIM Servers in the collection role is recommended at logical geographical location of data sources. Remote data collection from a large number of devices Resources consumed by remote data collection entity, such as on-box agents and collectors increase as the number of such sensors increases. In cases where there are a large number of on-box sensors, it is recommended to have a separate SSIM in Collection Server role. Combined collection & archiving role cannot handle input EPS rate Event service input queue starts filling up frequently and is not able to keep up with input EPS rate. Separating SSIM Server in archiving role from collection role reduce load on SSIM archiving server and improves EPS processing capacity of SSIM archiving server. Hardware used for SSIM in collection only role can be of reduced configuration compared to one required by SSIM in event archiving role or correlation role based on number of data sources and input EPS rate. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 8 of 31

4.3 Installing multiple SSIM Archiving Server to scale further Having separate Archiving server frees up hardware resources used for collection and normalization process, which in turn increases the EPS throughput of SSIM archiving server. SSIM archiving server performance can be further tuned to optimize the resource utilization. This is discussed in detail in following sections. To scale SSIM Deployment further from this point, more SSIM Server in archiving role can be added in SSIM deployment. These archiving servers can be logically separated based on Geographical distribution of deployment, where there can be a separate archiving server which serve collection server(s) of a specific region. Products data being archived, where the archiving of logically similar products can be archived in single SSIM Archiving server. In the following sections we will go over how to monitor and access current deployment performance. SSIM Archiving Server EPS performance data for specific version of SSIM with different hardware configuration is captured in SSIM Performance guide Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 9 of 31

5 Accessing current deployment collection & archiving performance SSIM has inbuilt components which helps in monitoring and provides performance statics information of various component of SSIM. This helps in accessing current performance and need for scaling current deployment. SSIM Statistics information is captured and displayed in SSIM Java UI at Statistics tile of SSIM. This tile shows performance data for different component under different tabs such as the System Status, Correlation, Filters, Rules, and Event Service. Each tab displays relevant numbers which can also be used in deriving exhibitory performance figures. For e.g in the System Status tab, useful information such as the system status for CPU and memory usage is displayed This information can be compared against setup in another deployment to get performance deviation and pointers on where SSIM deployment is getting bottlenecked. From the archiving performance point of view, Event Service Tab of this page should be monitored to gather total archiving EPS as well as individual archive EPS. Apart from this SSIM Web UI captures the event service queue status in real time. If these queues are getting filled up then it indicates that the deployment is not able to keep up with EPS rate. Below sections displays snapshots of these inbuilt tools and illustrate what information is captured, which can be used to access current deployment performance. 15 6 Introduction to SSIM Archives SSIM Archives are Symantec Security Information Manager s proprietary, flat files based database. It is optimized for Indexing and Storing events at high speed as required by SSIM. SSIM Archives are designed to reduce Archive management cost and provide high flexibility in storing and maintaining event storage for longer duration. SSIM creates separate XFS partition for storing archives. This partition is created at /eventarchive folder in SSIM Server. SSIM event archiving is optimized for writing and retrieving events. All events are stored in flat files. Using well-structured file structure saves cumbersome database management for large number of the events Archives can also be stored on external storage. SSIM provide support for storing archive on NAS, DAS and SAN storage. Multiple Archives can be created to separate events logically as desired by customer. Archive data is signed and compressed. Archives are signed and hashed. Archives are compressed using zlib library. The compression ratio achieved is 20%. Archive files are hashed to ensure that archives are not tempered. The default hashing algorithm used is MD5. It can be changed to SH1 or other supported algorithm by modifying /opt/symantec/simserver/etc/event-service-startup.xml file. DAS and SAN cards that are certified to work with base Red Hat OS version present on SSIM are supported. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 15 of 31

7 Monitoring and Optimizing SSIM Archiving server performance This section discusses various tuning parameters that are available and can be used to tune SSIM Archiving server to get maximum archiving performance. Following aspects plays key role in optimizing SSIM Archiving Server performance. Monitoring storage uses in SSIM. Optimizing storage used for archiving. Optimizing Archiving Server Configuration. Following sub sections discuss these aspects in detail. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 16 of 31

7.1 Monitoring SSIM Archiving Server storage Apart from EPS, Storage used for archiving plays a key role in Archiving server performance. So data such DISK I/O statistics, Disk Usage and Memory uses in Archiving Server are important to access and tune over all archiving server performance. This section discusses various tools available in SSIM to monitor storage used in SSIM. This data can be used to determined current storage performance and help in tuning storage to get better storage and in turn better archiving performance. These tools can be used to monitor storage used in SSIM SSIM Web UI provides Disk I/O Statistic. It can be found at Monitor > System Statistic > Disk page. In case where SSIM Server is running on virtual server, the DISK IO reports for virtual machines can be monitored from ESX Server performance reports as illustrated in following sections Disk Partition & Usage Information in SSIM Web UI Disk partition and usage information can be monitored at Disk link at System Statistics sub tab in Monitor Tab in SSIM Web UI as illustrated below Disk link in System Statistics sub tab in Monitor tab to monitor disk usage in SSIM Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 17 of 31

7.1.2 Disk Paging and I/O Statics Information on Web UI Disk paging and IO statistic data is very useful in monitoring performance of storage used in SSIM. This information can also be monitored at Disk link at System Statistics sub tab in Monitor Tab in SSIM Web UI as illustrated below Disk link in System Statistics sub tab in Monitor tab to monitor disk paging and IO Statistics Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 18 of 31

7.1.3 Monitoring Virtual Disk performance from ESX Server SSIM has large install base in virtual environment where SSIM is hosted on VMWare ESX Server. In these cases, tools provided by ESX Server can be utilized to obtain virtual disk performance. Performance tab VMWare vspehere Client to monitor virtual disk performance Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 19 of 31

7.2 Optimizing storage used for storing Archives Storage used in SSIM Archiving server can impact SSIM Archiving Server performance to a great extent. SSIM needs to write data at a very high speed to disk and hence Symantec recommend customer to use storage which support high through put rate. External Storage such as SAN, NAS & DAS can be used for storing archiving. Symantec recommends for better performance to have the Event Archive server on a physical system with a HBA card connected directly to a SANS server. SSIM doesn t support configuration of external storage from command line. It should be configured from SSIM Web UI. In case of NAS storage, archive server speed is dependent on speed of network. It is recommended to avoid shared network if NAS storage is used for archiving. In cases, where archiving server is running as a virtual machine guest, the external storage should be mounted to SSIM guest OS for better archiving performance. LSI Logic Parallel SCSI controlled should be preferred over VMWare Paravirtual SCSI Controller to get better performance. Please note that LSI Logic SAS SCSI Controller is not supported from SSIM Installation point of view. Certain servers ship with RAID controllers that have no Battery Backed Write Cache (BBWC) or Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC). As a result, write caching on these RAID controllers is disabled, resulting in reduced disk I/O performance capabilities. Customers experiencing slow I/O performance on such servers are advised to address it by: Adding Battery Backed Write Cache (BBWC) or Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC) as appropriate to RAID controllers that are sold by server vendor. Configuring the RAID controller s read cache/write cache ratio for 25/75 read vs. write. The archiving server EPS Performance on different hardware configuration can be found at Quick summary for archiving server performance is included in following sections. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 20 of 31

7.3 Optimizing Archiving Server Configuration Archiving server configuration can be optimized to archive events in such a way that each archive has relevant events, which are retained for appropriate amount of time. Having less and relevant events in an archive will help customer in getting better archive query performance. This can be achieved by using following recommendations Filter unwanted events Having less and relevant events improves SSIM Archiving performance as well as SSIM query performance. One should consider following while creating archive rule to filter unwanted events. Informational events which are not required to be archived can be filtered while configuring collector Further filtering of these events can be achieved by creating appropriate filter while creating archive storage rule. e.g. for filtering unwanted events is configuring setup to not collect events for windows handle closed activity from WEC Collector Review Event Summarizers Summarizer is legacy functionality which enable customer in collecting and querying summary data on events. However summarizers are very resource intensive and have negative impact on Event Archiving performance when enabled. Summarizers are disabled by default on SSIM 4.8. If there are summarizers enabled on a SSIM deployment than they should be turned off to achieve better archiving performance. Following alternatives should be considered for obtaining desired summary data. In SSIM 4.7 Symantec introduced trending queries which allow queries to span time ranges and provide trending information for the data specified in the criteria. Most point products having need for getting summary data for collecting state type of information have States Collectors now. Archive query on events from these collectors should be considered as an alternative to summarizers for getting summary information. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 21 of 31

7.3.3 Identify data sources having incorrectly parsed events Event service normalization process ensures that data in core fields of received events are in correct format for it to be able to normalize and process these events before archiving them. If there are data sources populating events with incorrect value in these core fields then event services will be overwhelmed detecting and correcting \ dropping these events. eventservice.log should be monitored to check if there is significant number of lines reporting data in a core field as invalid. The most common field reported is IP address field. A couple of examples of such lines are :42:49, [Normalizer] WARN com.symantec.sim.eventservice.util.networks - Invalid IP address: ResolveIP(BackRef(source_host_name)) :15:24, [Normalizer] WARN com.symantec.sim.eventservice.util.networks - Invalid IP address: ::ffff: Optimization using multiple archives Symantec recommends multiple archives for storing logically separate events. This division can be based on products or families of the products or based on other logical criteria as required by Organization. This will increase archiving performance as Each archive will have separate input memory queue Each storage rule uses a separate thread to process events which allow quicker processing of events for archiving purpose. For further performance improvement, different archives can be stored on different disk. This will allow multiple disk write to occur at the same time. This is primary benefit of multipath functionality with a SAN. Using multiple archives will also increase query performance as query will be run only on a subset of events. There is a maximum of 16 storage rules that can be created. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 22 of 31

7.3.5 Optimization using ordering storage rules appropriately Events are evaluated against archive rules criteria filter in the order of archive rule and are stored in the archive for which event satisfy archiving rule criteria. While ordering archiving rules following should be taken into consideration for optimizing archiving performance. Archiving rules should be sorted such that archives getting maximum events will be kept on top and the archives getting less events will be moved to bottom SSIM Logs and SSIM Statistic events related archive should be at the top of SSIM Archiving rules. Since all the product events will have SSIM logs and SSIM Statistic events and they should be first filtered before getting evaluated for individual product related storage rule criteria. The rule of thumb is, having less and relevant events in an archive will help customer in getting better archive query performance. It is recommended to query events for last one day from individual archives after the archives are setup and running for few days to ensure that it is not getting undesired \ not required events and modify the filter criteria accordingly Review retention days setting for individual archiving rule The default archiving retention period is set to infinite. This should be reviewed and changed to more reasonable value as per the organization policy. Normally 7 days is a good retention period for SSIM Logs as The only reason to have SSIM logs are to review if anything is going wrong with SSIM services. After 7 day it is way too long in the past unless required by compliances like PCI- DSS which require logs to be stored for 30 days. It is recommended to go through all the archive rules and set retention days for individual product based on organization policy for retaining logs for individual products. Filter out events which are not required to be stored. This will help improve disk capacity optimization and will also help in getting better query performance. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 23 of 31

7.3.7 Example of Multiple Archives with optimized Order and Retention period A picture is worth a thousand words. This is snapshot of Event Storage Rules under Server Configurations Tab in System tile in SSIM Java UI. It illustrates archiving server storage rules configurations, which can be used for archiving server performance optimization. It highlight the options for ordering archives and setting retention period for archives. This snapshot illustrates how SSIM archiving server performance can be improved by configuring multiple archives, ordering them appropriately and by setting appropriate retention period as per organizations compliance requirements for log retention of different products. 25 7.4 Optimizing Archiving Server Configuration (Advanced Settings) There are some advanced settings exposed in SSIM backend, based on internal working of archives which can be tuned to achieve better archiving performance. Please use caution while tuning these parameters as these impacts functioning of archives and can cause issues if not configured appropriately Optimization using correct amount of indexing. SSIM creates indexes on values of various fields of events. This help in getting better performance while querying on those fields. SSIM Server resources used in indexing can be optimized by optimizing number of fields used in indexing for better archiving performance. The list of fields on which SSIM create index while storing events in archives are present in indexed_event_fields.txt file inside individual archive folder. For e.g. for SSIM Logs it will be /eventarchive/ssimlogs/indexed_event_fields.txt This list is populated by default with a list of fields which most of the customers needs or query upon often. Resources consumed on indexing events against this list of fields can be optimized and reduced based on individual customer needs. Detailed information on how to change indexed fields can be found at Moving old \ inactive archives Events, which need to be stored for compliance reason and are not required to be queries for regular reporting purpose, cane be moved to offline. This will improve SSIM query performance and maintenance cost of SSIM Archiving server. SSIM Provide plugin scripts using which customers can automate for this process. Also customer can use the automated tool to move archives as documented in below KB. Monitor size of the archives or regular basis for better performance. It can be monitored as specified in below URL. Security Information Manager Symantec Confidential Page 25 of 31
