LabTech is built by System Administrators for System Administrators and designed to increase the efficiency of your technical support staff and provides powerful, enterprise level support in an IT solution provider or corporate IT department environment. LabTech will not only increase efficiency, you can measure the efficiency improvement with the built-in, robust ticketing and technical resource management system. Readiness Checklist IMPORTANT: Be sure you have completed the Installation Prerequisites prior to installing LabTech; otherwise, your installation may fail or components of LabTech will not function correctly. The following checklist will help you evaluate if you are ready to install LabTech. If you cannot put a checkmark in all checkboxes to indicate that it has been completed, then please go back to the Installation Prerequisites document to complete those items. Please note that some items are only applicable to 2003 Server or 2008 Server. Does the server meet the hardware requirements? IIS 6.0 or higher installed?.net 3.5 installed? Service Pack 2 installed, if using 2003 Server? IIS 6.0 Compatibility (all features) installed, if using 2008 Server? ASP and ASP.net installed? Enabled? 27A LabTechInstallation 1
2 LabTech Ignite Installation Server Installation Have you verified that NONE of these applications are installed on the server? Microsoft SharePoint Services (any version), Windows Update Services (any version), or Apache Web Service (any version? Are you able to access the Internet from the server? Have you forwarded ports 70, 80, 443, 5500 and to the server? Have you forwarded port 70-75UDP to the server? Have you registered a FQDN for the server with your registrar? Did you set up a new zone matching your external domain name? Did you add the www and other records you need and set them the same as they are on the external DNS server? Did you add a labtech record and use the local IP address of the server? Did you set up an additional SMTP connector for mail using anonymous connections and did you use the LAN IP of the server to restrict anonymous connections? Did you install a SMTP server on the server to use as a backup mail server? Did you make sure you that your secondary mail server is running on the same SMTP port as the primary mail server? Did you set it to allow everyone to relay and allow everyone to contact? Did you configure smart host to be the primary mail server? Anti-virus and anti-spyware applications on the server are disabled? Is the LabTech server set up with a static IP address? If you want to import clients, you will need to create a client data file. The file can be created in Notepad or Excel. Refer to the Creating a Client Import File section for instructions. The instructions will be the same for both Windows 2003 and 2008 servers. The additional recommended configuration later in this document will have steps for both 2003 and 2008 setups. Follow the instructions listed below to install LabTech on your server: 1. Download the LabTech installation executable. 2. Right-click the LabTech installation executable icon and from the menu that displays, select Run as Administrator. 27A LabTechInstallation 2

Click OK to close message. If it is not valid, verify your CD key and try again. 14. LabTech will automatically enter a random password in the System Password field. This password is used to install remote agents. This should be a simple password and will be visible to most users. It is recommended that you change it from the default password. IMPORTANT: DO NOT use any special characters (e.g., &,*,%,^) in the System Password field. Capital case, lower case and numbers only. Any special characters will cause some processes to fail. 15. Leave LTShare Path with the default value of C:\LTShare unless your system drive is a different drive letter. 16. Create Network Share is checked by default. Leave this at the default. This will map the local LTShare directory to the L: drive (must be mapped to L:). 17. Download ToolPak is checked by default. This toolpak contains all of the additional software LabTech requires for its probes and scripts. You will need to the leave this selected (default setting) in order to ensure you download the toolpak. 18. The System Configuration will default to LabTech Ignite. It is recommended to keep the default setting as this creates a system with all of the options and a single managed services group for increased simplicity. Empty System will install only the bare minimum to run a LabTech server 19. Click on Install LabTech Server. This will take several minutes. You will see varying progress bars as the installation progresses. After several minutes, the 27A LabTechInstallation 6

This will allow you to host the LabTech server at your office without causing saturation problems on your bandwidth. For instructions refer to the Offsite Hosting documentation. IIS 6 Configuration The following instructions will walk you through the recommended configuration for IIS 6. These steps will: Disable HTTP Keep-Alives: The Keep-Alive features of HTTP 1.1 will cause a major load issue on a large server. There is no need for keep-alives as the LabTech server completes all processing with one request. Set the.asp Version: The ASP portion of LabTech is written for.net Framework 2.0, but the website may try to use a different version and not function correctly. You will need to specify the version to use in the configuration. Set the Default Document: Sometimes the web server does not receive the default.aspx as a default document. You may need to set this manually. Add the *MIME Type: On a Windows 2003 Server, you cannot download a file that is not in the MIME list. This will prevent you from running scripts that require external files. This is not necessary for Windows 2008 Server. 27A LabTechInstallation 20

If you have more than one internet connection on your main system's LAN, you can forward ports 80 and 443 (SSL) to the LabTech server on both routers. You will need to have a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for each internet connection. When you install a LabTech agent, you will specify the FQDNs in the server address line separated by a pipe ( ). For Example: Router A - labtecha.yourdomain.com Router B - labtechb.yourdomain.com Router C - labtechc.yourdomain.com 1. In the Control Center, expand Admin > Templates. 2. Right-click a template and select Templates > Modify Template. 27A LabTechInstallation 35

Enter each of the FQDN s in the Server Address field separated by a pipe ( ). 6. Click Save. Figure 47: Sample Multiple Internet Connections Setup By doing this, the agent will use router A as the primary connection, router B as secondary and router C as the last resort. The agent will support five servers and will always use the first server unless it is unavailable; then it falls back to the next in list, and so on. Configuring Alternate Ports The LabTech server can run on any port. Port 80 is the default and can be changed in the IIS Manager. You can also run the LabTech server on multiple ports, so that some clients are connecting on port 80, some on port 7000, and still others via SSL. The steps will vary depending on the version of IIS being used. Please refer to the appropriate section for the corresponding instructions: IIS 6 or IIS 7 and 7.5. If you need to employ antivirus software on the server, follow these guidelines to increase performance: 1. Disable scanning of %Programfiles%\Labtech\MySql\. 2. Disable scanning of *.tmp and *.MYD files. 3. Disable all network monitoring/blocking. 4. Disable Web Request scanning. NOTE: Some antivirus software packages can lock MySQL files and cause the database to roll back transactions.
