2 August 2018 Dear Friends, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Central and Northern Arizona invites your school to participate in this year s Pop Tab Challenge and/or our PENNY Challenge! This packet contains all of the necessary forms and information that you will need in order for your school to get involved in one or both of these programs. Collecting pop tabs is a wonderful way to teach kids about recycling and collecting both pop tabs and pennies is a great way to show kids how small actions can have a significant impact in their community! In addition, many teachers take the opportunity to integrate both pop tabs and pennies into their everyday curriculum. From history to math to art, pop tabs and pennies can be used as teaching tools for almost any subject. By collecting pop tabs and/or pennies, your school will help support the families who travel to metropolitan Phoenix with children needing medical treatment, and find a comfortable and compassionate home at Ronald McDonald House. The actual cost of housing a family for one night is $76. Families are asked to pay just $15 a night, however, no family is ever turned away for financial reasons. Families who are dealing with the stress and pressure of caring for a sick or injured child must have a home-away-fromhome in their time of need. At RHMC they are provided with a warm environment and the emotional support of other families in similar situations. Last year, the Pop Tab Challenge was extremely successful and we anticipate another exciting year. 4 Challenge Rules (and other important stuff!) Each school must submit an official registration form to participate in the Pop Tab Challenge. Registration form must be received before tabs will be accepted as part of school s total. The contest will run from August 20, 2018 through May 1, Tabs may be dropped off at the front office of any of the three valley Houses from 9 am to 7 pm seven days a week, unless other arrangements have been made. Tabs may also be dropped off directly at the recycler. You can take them to any recycler and send us the proceeds of your donation along with the donation form and a copy of your receipt. (Don t forget to specify that your donation is for the Pop Tab Challenge.) Regardless of the recycler you choose, please be sure and send us a copy of your receipt and a drop-off form. These can either be mailed or faxed to the RMHC offices with your school name and contact info. Each school is responsible for transporting their pop tabs to Ronald McDonald House Charities and filling out a Pop Tab Donation Form. Copies are included in the back of this packet for your convenience. This must be done each time tabs are dropped off. School representatives are responsible for recording the correct weight of the tabs dropped off on the Pop Tab Donation Form at the RMHC front desk. School representatives are also responsible for obtaining a receipt (if desired) for their tabs at this time. Awards will be given to the top school in each of the following categories: The school that collects the most pop tabs by weight. The school that collects the most pop tabs per student PTC Timeline August 20, 2018: Forms are posted online and contest starts! Tabs will now be accepted as part of school s total.* May 1, 2019: Official end of Pop Tab Challenge - tabs will not be added to total after this date. May 9, 2019: Winners announced on or before this date. *REMEMBER Registration must be turned in before tabs will be accepted as part of school s total.

5 Challenge Dropping Off Your Tabs (and other important stuff!) At Ronald McDonald House Tabs may be dropped at the front desk of any of the three valley Houses between 9 am and 7 pm seven days a week. School representatives are responsible for recording tab weight on the Pop Tab Challenge Donation form and obtaining a thank you letter (receipt) at this time. Our Houses Roanoke: 501 E Roanoke Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona Cambridge: 1980 E Cambridge Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona Dobson: 2225 W Southern Avenue, Mesa, Arizona At the Recycler Tabs may also be dropped off directly at the recycler. You will receive a receipt for your donation, a copy of which must be submitted to RMHC with the pop tab donation form. If you take your tabs to the recycler, please send the proceeds along with a copy of your receipt and pop tab donation form directly to RMHC using the Roanoke address (listed above) Attn: Development Coordinator. IMPORTANT: If you do choose to drop your tabs off at the recycler, please call us and let us know so we can watch out for a payment from the recycling company. May 1, 2019 is the last day to drop off tabs towards your school s total!

6 Challenge Things to Keep in Mind (and other important stuff!) Aluminum vs. Steel While all can tabs may look the same, they do not all act the same! Most soda tabs are made out of aluminum, but sometimes other can tabs (such as cat food and soup) are made out of steel. When we turn our bins into the recycler, too many steel tabs mixed in with the aluminum can downgrade the entire bin, decreasing the amount of money we receive. Because of this, it is very important that your students know how to tell the difference. As a rule of thumb If it sticks to a magnet, it is not aluminum. (Usually these sticky tabs are steel.) A good science lesson for us all! Collection Containers We have hundreds of students that participate in the PTC each year! This makes it not costeffective for us to supply the small collection container houses to schools like we do individuals. We encourage schools to get their students involved by creating their own collection containers! Coffee cans, shoe boxes, and even Rubbermaid containers work great. This also provides a great opportunity to reuse other household items (another one of those R s reduce, reuse, and recycle!) You can collect the tabs in whatever you want, but here s how we need you to turn them in at the House: Tabs should be bagged in large trash bags (preferably clear) and visibly marked with your school name, tab weight (if known) and the date they were turned in. Tabs will NOT be accepted in milk jugs, liter bottles, water jugs, or any similar container. They are very difficult and time consuming to empty when they are stored this way. While we will accept tabs in large boxes or wide mouthed containers, we prefer trash bags (as mentioned above). We do not have a recycling service that picks up cardboard or plastic, so these containers are thrown away and take up unnecessary room in our trash bins.

7 ...it just makes cents! While pop tabs are a great way to raise awareness for the House, with the constant fluctuation in today s economy, there is no guarantee on the amount of money we will receive for them when the challenge is over. We are of the opinion that no donation is ever too small. In fact, it is these small donations that really add up to big change for the House! All schools who participate in both the Penny Challenge and the Pop Tab Challenge will be entered into a drawing to win a SPECIAL PRIZE! But, we have received feedback from several schools asking if there are any other ways students can make a more measurable impact on the house. While it is often difficult for us to predict how many pop tabs it takes to cover the cost of a single night stay for a family here (the going rate for aluminum is constantly changing) we do know that it takes approximately 1,500 pennies to cover the cost of a family s nightly donation! Collecting pennies is another extremely easy way to get students involved in giving back to their community and, like pop tabs, they can be a very effective teaching tool for everything from science to math to even history! In addition to adding up quicker, pennies may be perceived by parents as a healthier alternative to pop tabs, since (generally) pop tabs come from soda and other soft drink cans. This also provides students whose families may not drink soda (or any such beverages that come in an aluminum can) an excellent way to get involved. You can participate in the Pop Tab Challenge and Penny Challenge, just the Pop Tab Challenge, or just the Penny Challenge. It s entirely up to you! Did you know The amount of pennies it takes to equal 1 pound depends on the year they were minted? Kind of interesting if you ask us!

For those of you who decide to join us in the PENNY CHALLENGE this year, here s what you need to know: TURNING IN YOUR PENNIES: Pennies can be dropped off at the front desk of the Roanoke House from 9 am to 7 pm, seven days a week. School representatives are responsible for recording the dollar value of the pennies on the Penny Challenge Donation Form. We will verify your donation and you will receive an official letter of receipt containing the exact dollar amount of the donation at the end of the Challenge. The House on Roanoke is located at: 501 East Roanoke Avenue Phoenix, AZ THE ROANOKE HOUSE IS THE ONLY RMHC LOCATION THAT WILL ACCEPT PENNIES. If you are unable to drop your pennies off at the House, please feel free to take them to the nearest Coinstar machine and send the receipt and the money received from the pennies to the address listed above. We understand that the amount we receive from these donations will be less than the amount you actually collected due to processing fees at the Coinstar machines. Please do not mix pop tabs and pennies in the same collection container. Rules regarding registration, dates, and how to turn your pennies to the House are the same for both the penny and pop tab challenges neatly labeled in clear plastic bags. You may use Ziploc bags for pennies. Similar to the pop tab challenge, winning schools will be chosen in two categories: The school that collects the most pennies overall. The school that collects the most pennies per student.
