4 Internet Research - Assignment #2 Think first then search. Imagine walking in the library to research a topic for a school report and you start reading the first book you see on the topic. Without considering the age of the book, the credibility of the author, the validity of the content or the other resources available, you decide to use this book for your entire report. Unfortunately, this is similar to how many students use the Internet for researching information. They select the first web site that appears without evaluating its content or origin. The Internet is a huge collection of information. Some of the web sites can be very useful; however, many can be questionable. Effective Internet research is important to save time and to obtain quality information. Think first then search. The following steps can help improve your research results: 1) Think about your topic or information desired before you start hitting the keyboard. Write down key words, phrases, etc. 2) Decide which search tool (search engine, meta-search, web directory, etc.) will be best in obtaining the information you need. 3) Go to the site and preview its content. (NOTE: This does not mean to read every word on the web site.) 4) Evaluate the site for its reliability, accuracy and relevancy. 5) If you decide to use the web site, make sure you obtain the information needed to properly cite your resource. 4

14 Internet Safety - Assignment #6 Although text messaging appears to be the primary communication tool for young adults, most teens have spent time blogging, instant messaging, e- mailing, joining chat rooms, gaming and/or interacting on social networking sites. While allowing a sense of communication freedom, these internet activities can lead to unwanted outcomes for the user. For example, the number of cyber bullying cases continues to increase annually. According to statistics from the i-safe foundation: Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online. Over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet. Well over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs. Just as drivers must learn the rules of the road before obtaining a driver s license, internet users should be aware of guidelines for navigating safely in the cyber world. Instructions: For your final assignment in the Internet standard, you have been asked by a middle school teacher to design a 3 fold brochure on internet safety (cyber safety) to be distributed to 7 th and 8 th graders. The following are some topics you may want to include in your brochure: - Safe searching tips (smart surfing) - Cyberbulling - Identity threat (phising, spyware, etc.) 14

15 (Note: See CT 5 - Assignment 4 if you need assistance on the layout for a 3 fold brochure.) All the information in this brochure must be accurate and based on research findings. Do not make up statistics, etc. Before starting this assignment, review some web sites on internet safety. You need to research at least 3 web sites and list them on the back of your brochure. Possible sites to visit are: Include the following in your brochure: Title panel Current statistics or information that illustrates the need for internet safety. Steps or tips for making internet use safer for young adults. (Remember that this brochure is intended for 7 th and 8 th graders.) On the back panel, include your name, date and the web sites you used as resources. Brochure Requirements: Your brochure must include the following components: Two landscape pages. Do not use a template. 3 EVEN panels (both pages) All margins.25 3 columns and 1 row Text covers 80% of the brochure Body text = size 12pt. font (titles and headings may be larger) Images cover no more than 20% of the brochure (From clipart or the Internet) Images are not larger than 2 x 2 inches. No more than two different types of text fonts. Equal margins around each panel. Equal panels when folded. Opens correctly (like a book, left to right) No more than two WordArt objects Appropriate use of color Web sites used listed on the back panel (3 minimum) Your name and date located on the bottom back panel 15
