SyncPlayer Public Demo Christian Fremerey and Frank Kurth Multimedia Signal Processing Group Department of Computer Science III University of Bonn, Römerstraße 164, Bonn, Germany 29 March Introduction The SyncPlayer is a prototypical software framework that integrates various Music Information Retrieval (MIR) techniques such as music synchronization, audio structure analysis and content-based retrieval into a powerful, multimodal system [1, 2]. The SyncPlayer system basically consists of three software components: a server component, a client component, and some tools for data administration. These three components can be summarized as follows: The user operates the client component, which in its basic mode acts like a standard software audio player for *.mp3 and *.wav files. Additional interfaces, e.g., for performing content-based queries as well as various visualization tools, are provided through plug-ins. A remote computer system runs the server component, which supplies the client with annotation data such as audio structure information and provides several further types of services. Several server-side administration tools are available for creating and updating the databases and indexes that underly the SyncPlayer system. The SyncPlayer Public Demo consists of the client component including several plugins. This demo client is readily set up to communicate with the demo server hosted at the University of Bonn. Presets using specific arrangements of plug-ins have been prepared for demonstrating three distinct user scenarios. The remainder of this manual describes how to get the SyncPlayer client running and gives further explanations on each of the demonstrated scenarios. 2 First Steps In order to run the SyncPlayer Public Demo you need to have a Java Runtime Environment or higher installed on your system. A Java Runtime Environment can be obtained from Sun at 1
Figure 1: SyncPlayer client main window and a plug-in for quick access to the demo presets. To run the demo client you can either use the script files distributed with the package (SyncPlayerClient.bat for Windows, SyncPlayerClient.sh for Linux) or type this starting call on a command-line shell: java -Djava.library.path=./lib -jar SyncPlayerClient.jar -presetmode The SyncPlayer client should start up an look like the screenshot depicted in Figure 1. 3 Demo Preset 1: Audio Identification Figure 2: The Demo Preset 1 opens the Playlist plug-in and the MultiVis plug-in. This demo illustrates the retrieval of annotations from a server by means of audio identifi- 2
cation. (In our context annotations denote various types of data, like lyrics or notes, which are associated to temporal positions or regions within particular pieces of audio.) Upon selecting Demo 1: Audio Identification, two plug-ins are opened: a Playlist and a MultiVis plug-in. In the playlist, the demo song excerpts bundled with this demo are displayed. Choose one of the songs and select it with a double-click. The song is opened in the player and playback is started. The MultiVis plug-in detects that a new song has been opened and, in turn, starts extracting a fingerprint from (particular sample blocks of) the audio data. The fingerprint is then transmitted to the SyncPlayer server, which located at our lab at the University of Bonn. By searching an indexed database, the server identifies the song and the particular start position of the underlying audio data within the song. The server then acquires all annotations available for the identified song from its annotation database. These annotations are sent back to the client and displayed in the MultiVis plug-in. In the example shown in Figure 2, a recording of the piece Against all odds by Phil Collins has been selected from the PlayList plug-in (right). For this piece, lyrics data are available from the SyncPlayer server. Those lyrics are displayed in the MultiVis plug-in (bottom left). Note that the lyrics position corresponding to the actual audio playback position are indicated by both a small marker beneath the single words and by using a different color (blue). Further note that, for demo purposes, the provided audio material only consists of short excerpts of the original recordings. The advantages of using the audio fingerprints for identifying the audio recordings selected in the SyncPlayer instead of using filenames or tags (like ID3) are: The identification works even if the files are tagged insufficiently or incorrectly. Since the song position of the transmitted audio block is identified, the timestamps of the annotations can automatically be adapted to audio files with different amounts of initial silence or preceeding audio data or audio files that contain only an excerpt of a song. Note that there may be more than one annotation track available for each song. One may switch between these so called annotation tracks by selecting a particular track from the Track selector located at the upper panel of the MultiVis plug-in. Furthermore, one can open additional MultiVis plug-ins to display more than one annotation track simultaneously. To open an additional MultiVis plug-in, hit the Add Plugin button at the main window and choose MultiVis Plugin 1.08 (local). The MultiVis plug-in supports saving and recalling of particular settings using presets. The default preset in this demo ( Local XML (Midi) ) looks only for locally available annotation files inside the./annotationsxml subdirectory. To make the plug-in request and load annotations from the SyncPlayer server, there are two options: 1. Switch to the preset called Use SyncPlayer Server. This preset can be selected in the Preset menu of the MultiVis plug-in. 2. Choose Tracks -> Load Tracks from SyncPlayer Server from the menu. 4 Demo Preset 2: Audio Switcher In the second demo, synchronized playback of different audio recordings of a particular piece of music is demonstrated. Upon selecting Demo 2: Audio Switcher, the Demo Preset 2 is 3
Figure 3: The Demo Preset 2 opens the AudioSwitcher plug-in and three MultiVis plug-ins that are set to display different types of annotation tracks. launched, see Figure 3. It consists of the Audio Switcher plug-in (bottom left) as well as three MultiVis plug-ins (right). The MultiVis plug-ins are configured to use different visualization modes: while the topmost plug-in shows the musical notes using a piano-roll-style display, the midmost plug-in shows the audio structure of the selected piece. The audio structure is a automatically calculated estimate of the musical form of the underlying audio recording [3]. Each row of the plug-in shows repeating (in the sense of harmonically similar) blocks within the audio. Selecting either of those blocks, playback starts at the corresponding audio position. The bottommost plug-in shows the piece s lyrics as described above. As the AudioSwitcher panel indicates, in our example five different audio recordings of Schubert s Winterreise (D911, No. 5) are available. In the plug-in, the audio recording currently selected for playback is marked by a red playback symbol (in the preset, the topmost recording is selected upon startup), the others are marked in blue color. Pushing the Play button, the currently selected audio recording is played-back. Both the slider displayed below the audio name and the playback time (on the right) indicate the current playback position. During playback, the sliders of all the other (in this case four) audio recordings are moved according to the musical position of the currently selected recording. Note that the respective playback times are adjusted correspondingly. As different interpretations are performed in different tempi, the displayed playback times will generally differ from piece to piece. At any time during playback, the user can switch to each of the available recordings by selecting the playback button on the left of the respective slider. As a result, playback 4
switches to the selected recording and resumes at exactly the same musical position where the previously selected recording has been left. Hence, some kind of musically seamless transition between different versions of one and the same piece of music is possible. Figure 4: Audio Switcher demo with Brahms hungarian dances 05 syncdata 3 interpr.txt test set selected. Using the file selection button of the Audio Switcher (leftmost button), different sets of synchronized audio files may be selected. This SyncPlayer demo contains three synchronized audio sets. Choosing Brahms hungarian dances 05 syncdata 3 interpr.txt, three versions of Brahm s Hungarian Dances No. 5 are selected, see Fig. 4. Using this example, we would like to illustrate the following phenomenon: while the musical structure of the first recording as shown by the lower right MultiVis plug-in is AABCCAAD, the other two recordings have a different structure and do not contain the last repetition of the A-part (starting from time position 2:40 in the topmost recording). While playing-back the topmost recording, this may be observed as the two bottom sliders (almost) stop during playback of this part of the recording. The synchronization data used to generate the visualization provided by the Audio Switcher, and containing the information on how the different versions of a particular piece of music are in temporal correspondence, have been obtained using algorithms for automatic audio-audio synchronization [5]. 5 Demo Preset 3: Lyrics Search In the third demo, lyrics-based audio retrieval using the SyncPlayer is demonstrated. When selecting Demo 3: Lyrics Search, Demo Preset 3 is started, see Figure 5. It consists of a MultiVis plug-in (bottom left) and the LyricsSearch plug-in (bottom right). The LyricsSearch plug-in provides a simple Google-style interface for entering text-based queries (top). In the example, the query term reasons has been entered. Pressing the Search 5
Figure 5: The Demo Preset 3 opens the LyricsSearch plug-in (bottom right) and a MultiVis plug-in. button, the entered text is sent as a query to the SyncPlayer server. At the server side, the query is processed by a query engine for text-based queries. In case the query matches the lyrics of one of the pieces contained in the server s data base, the name of the respective piece along with the corresponding temporal position of the match is sent to the SyncPlayer client. The bottom part of the LyricsSearch plug-in contains a ranked list of all corresponding query results for the present example. After selecting one of the query results, the respective audio recording (if available, see below) is loaded in the SyncPlayer and audio playback starts at the time position corresponding to the query terms. Note that the query engine tolerates spelling errors and incorporates several ranking strategies such as term proximity to improve the query results. In order two allow a direct navigation to the audio recordings shown in the result list, there are two mechanisms: first, the audio recordings may be transmitted from the Sync- Player server using a streaming operation. Unfortunately, because of copyright issues, this mechanisms is not available in the current public demo. Therefore, as a second mechanism, locally available audio recordings stored in the AudioFiles directory may be used. For each result displayed in the result list, a small symbol (either a green A, a red N/A, or a red P/A) indicates the availablility of the respective recording for playback. Here, an A indicates that the audio recording is available in the local AudioFiles folder, while N/A indicates that the recording is not available. When P/A is displayed, although an excerpt of the required audio recording is available in the local folder, this excerpt does not contain the temporal region corresponding to the query result. In our demo version try querying the term against which is contained in a part of the Phil Collins piece that is not available in the provided audio 6
recording. 6 Additional plug-ins A list of all plug-ins available with the current demo version of the SyncPlayer is displayed when selecting the Add Plugin button of the audio player. The Waveform Plotter can be used to display the audio recording s signal waveform in the style of commonly used audio processing software (such as Wavelab, Cool Edit, or Audacity). Additionally, the plug-in provides a spectrogram plotter to display a time-frequency analysis based on the Fourier transform. The SyncFileMaker may be used to semi-manually generate text-audio- and MIDI-audioannotations which may then be used for synchronous display using the MultiVis plug-in. The plug-in can also be used for audio fingerprinting, which is a prerequisite for automatically identifying audio recordings played back by the SyncPlayer client. As an in-depth description of those plug-ins is beyond the scope of this demo, we do not give further details. 7 Prospect on the upcoming SyncPlayer 2.0 SyncPlayer constitutes a first important milestone in developing an integrated framework for Music Information Retrieval (MIR). The currently developed SyncPlayer 2.0 will provide a completely redesigned mechanism for connecting arbitrary query engines to the SyncPlayer server. Besides lyrics-based queries, SyncPlayer 2.0 will, among others, provide query-by-humming and audio retrieval based on audio matching [4]. Furthermore, SyncPlayer 2.0 will employ an underlying database of global metadata (containing information on title, composer, interpretor, CD, etc. of the currently selected recording) which is currently under development in the context of a joint research project with the Bavarian State Library, Munich. Improved visualization functionality of SyncPlayer 2.0 will include a SheetMusic plug-in for synchronously displaying scanned sheet music during audio playback. References [1] C.
