3 ViV Muse User Guide Pinting and Clicking the ViV Muse Using the ViV Muse Fr infrmatin n hw t install the ViV Muse, please refer t the apprpriate Installatin Guide. Nte: This guide is fr all ViV mdels, hwever please remember that the ViV Lite des nt integrate with speech recgnitin prgrams. This is frequently nted in the User guide. If yu need t upgrade frm the Lite and wish t activate speech recgnitin and assciated advanced tabs, please cntact us. The first time yu use the ViV Muse Once the ViV Muse is installed, these are the basic steps t get the prgram up and running: 1. Start the ViV Muse sftware (fllw instructins belw) 2. Calibrate the ViV Muse (fllw instructins belw) 3. Check that the webcam is adjusted prperly fr use with the ViV Muse (fllw instructins belw and the sectin n the Vide tab) 4. If yu have the Standard r Prfessinal mdel and want t use speech recgnitin t cntrl the ViV Muse, cnfigure it (fllw instructins belw and the sectin n the Speech tab) Windws 7, 8, and Vista users: Befre running ViV Muse the first time (and pssibly, after an upgrade), yu may have t: 1) Right-click n the ViV Muse icn and select "Run as Administratr" the first time yu start the ViV Muse, t avid a permissins errr. If "Run as administratr" des nt appear in the right-click menu, Right-click t get the Prperties dialg, then under the "Cmpatibility" tab, check "Run this prgram as an administratr". Then, after running the ViV Muse this way fr the first time, yu shuld be able t uncheck that checkbx and it will run nrmally thereafter. 2) If the cmputer asks fr yur permissin t make changes t yur cmputer, with a dialg bx similar t the ne shwn here, say "OK", "Allw", r "Yes". Fr Windws 8 users, basic security verrides may be necessary when dwnlading sftware files that are nt readily recgnized by Windws 8. The ViV sftware is a safe and secure prgram, psing n danger t PCs. 3

4 If yu d nt d this yu may get an errr such as: "Culd nt initialize applicatin. Errr 42 (IPM) Please cntact technical supprt". In sme Windws installatins, ViV Muse will nt wrk with Internet Explrer if the latter is in "Prtected Mde". 4

5 Starting the Sftware Turn yur cmputer n. Click n Start in the bttm left crner f yur screen. Then click All Prgrams. Select ViV Muse t begin. Alternately, the installatin prgram typically places the 'ViV Muse' icn n yur Desktp r within yur Start menu. Yu can pen by simply duble clicking the icn wherever it is. If yu get this Security Warning, click Run anyway. Helpful Hints Plug in the webcam and micrphne befre starting the ViV Muse prgram. If yu plan t use vice clicking set up in a quiet place r use a high quality micrphne. Adjust the vlume f yur speakers t a cmfrtable listening level. Experiment with different lighting t find what wrks best in yur envirnment. Get yurself int a cmfrtable psitin fr using the cmputer befre calibrating. 5

6 Using the ViV Muse Once yu start the ViV Muse prgram a cuple f screens may appear temprarily and minimize autmatically, then this screen will appear: Get yurself int a cmfrtable psitin fr using the cmputer. Click Tracker Camera. Or, if using the Standard r Prfessinal mdel and have a cmpatible speech recgnitin system installed, yu can give the vice cmmand Tracker Camera t d this. If yu are using Dragn r Vista speech prgrams yu can als say Start ViV Muse (vee vh), if thse prgrams are cnfigured t start prgrams in that fashin. Yet anther way is t press the Enter key. Nw yur face will appear n the ViV Muse display in the instructin bx. Smile! 6

7 Make any necessary adjustments t center yurself in the camera s viewfinder by tilting yur screen, mving yur bdy and/r repsitining the webcam. Yur face shuld be entirely within the picture, and nt t small. Calibrating The next step is t calibrate the ViV Muse t yur mvements. When yu click n Tracker Calibrate this bulls-eye will appear with instructins fr yu t fllw it by turning yur head as it mves and reappears n yur screen. It is nt necessary t exaggerate yur mtins since the ViV Muse is sensitive t subtle mvements. Just keep yurself in a cmfrtable psitin and let the ViV Muse d the wrk fr yu. Or if yu have a cmpatible speech-recgnitin prgram installed, yu can say Tracker Calibrate t d this if yu prefer. Yet anther way is t press the Enter key. After fllwing the bulls-eye, it will highlight a prtin f yur face within the frame. Then this bx will appear asking if yur face is centered prperly in the highlighted area. 7

8 If the bx is apprximately framing yur face, use yur head t mve and hld the cursr ver OK. If nt, just wait fr a few secnds and prepare t recalibrate by fllwing the bulls-eye n the screen again. Recalibratin will begin autmatically if yu dn t put the pinter ver 'OK.' (Yu can calibrate as many times as necessary, r at any time while using ViV Muse. Simply click n Settings then Tracker Calibrate r use the vice cmmand Tracker Calibrate and fllw the same prcedure.) After calibratin, the Vrtant ViV Muse cntrl screen will minimize and this cntrl bar will appear and remain at the tp f yur screen: Pinting and Clicking When the ViV Muse is first installed, it will autmatically be in Dwell Clicking mde, unless it has been set up therwise at the factry. T click n smething, yu just hld the muse pinter at the place yu want t click, and after a brief time (which can be defined in the Settings tabs), a click will ccur. The cntrl bar indicates the type f click that will be dne. T change the type f click yur ViV Muse will make, hld the cursr ver the Clicks Off indicatr and watch it flip thrugh the fllwing ptins. (Respnse time fr this can be changed in Settings. ) The bx will change t reflect yur chices and yu ll hear a sund with each change. Single Click Enables yu t single click the muse and use yur cmputer. Drag Enables yu t mve things arund the screen and scrll quickly. Duble Click Enables yu t duble click t pen prgrams and dcuments. Right Click Enables yu t execute right click functins and pp up menus. Clicks Off Prevents yu frm clicking unintentinally. 'Aut Click' The ViV Muse attempts t chse the crrect type f click fr each click yu d. Fr example, when it is ready t d a simple left muse click, the cntrl bar will lk like this: 8

9 Yu can verride the prgram temprarily while using the ViV Muse by using the cmputer s manual muse. The amunt f time befre the system reverts back t the ViV Muse can be adjusted in Settings, as the Muse Revert Time. If yu intend t use the manual muse fr an extended perid, use the 'Tracker Disable' vice cmmand if using vice integratin. Nw yu can use the ViV Muse withut saying a wrd. Mve the cursr by mving yur head and hld it ver what yu want it t click n. If this is the first time yu have used the ViV Muse, befre ding much mre, yu will prbably first want t check the webcam settings in the Vide tab. This will ensure yu are getting ptimum perfrmance frm yur head tracker. Vice Clicking (Standard & Prfessinal Versins) If yu have speech recgnitin running and selected in the Speech settings, yur ViV Muse will autmatically be in the Vice Clicking mde. This can be used fr many applicatins. In this mde yu can type text, numbers and punctuatin, edit dcuments, explre the web, play games, mve yur cursr, and tell the ViV Muse exactly what yu want it t d. Simply mve yur head t mve the cursr and give a verbal cmmand. Be aware that there is a slight delay that allws yu t say the cmmand a mment befre yu are exactly where yu need t be t have the cursr respnd. This keeps things mving alng nicely. (The sectin n Vice Activated Cmmands has a list with descriptins f all the cmmands yur ViV Muse knws.) If yu are using dwell clicking and have a speech-recgnitin prgramming running, yu can als always g back t using Vice Clicking by saying Tracker Vice. T return t dwell clicking mde just say Tracker Dwell. Yu will find it quick and easy t change frm ne applicatin t anther as needed. If yu wish t switch t Dwell clicking, say Tracker Dwell and the cntrl bar will indicate yu are in dwell clicking mde. Alternately, and especially if yur speech recgnitin prgram has slwed dwn r becme unrespnsive, yu can hld the muse ver the larger buttn fr several secnds t cause the ViV Muse t switch t dwell clicking. Recentering If yu find that the ViV Muse is nt exactly where yu'd like it t be, and yu're nt using a speech-recgnitin prgram, take the muse pinter t the nearest crner f the screen. Hld it there fr a secnd r tw, and if the Recenter frm Crners ptin in the Dwell-clicking tab is enabled, the ViV Muse will shw yu the familiar target at the center f the screen, allw yu t pint yur head there, then re-center. If yu are using a speech-recgnitin prgram, the ViV Muse has several pwerful cmmands fr putting the pinter where yu want it. See Vice Cntrl f the ViV Muse. 9

10 Checking that the webcam is adjusted prperly Befre using the ViV Muse fr the first time, this is a great time t pen the settings panel by clicking n Settings, then g t the Vide Tab, and check that the frame rate f the camera is at least 14. If nt, please g t thevide Tab and adjust yur webcam t get a higher frame rate. The ViV Muse is usable with a lwer frame rate, but will be much better with the higher frame rates! Slitaire Practice A gd way t start familiarizing yurself with the ViV Muse is with a gd ld fashined game f Slitaire. Click n Start in the bttm left crner, g t All Prgrams, g t Games and then click n Slitaire t pen. Starting ut, it is best t maximize the Slitaire screen t keep the cursr n yur game. As yu get mre adept at using the ViV Muse yu will be able t g frm ne screen t anther with cnfidence and ease. When yu start a new game, set the Tracker t Single Click if yu want t flip cards frm the pile r t Drag if yu want t mve cards arund. The wrd Drp will appear as the dragging actin takes place. While playing Slitaire yur cmmand center will g back and frth between these tw cmmands withut scrlling thrugh the ther ptins unless yu prmpt it by hlding the cursr ver the cmmand ptins fr an extended time. (Slitaire is an excellent way t experience the benefits f the Aut Click feature, as it greatly reduces the need t change the type f click. The ViV Muse figures ut when yu need t drag cards, and when yu need t just click n them.) During Slitaire, and if using vice recgnitin with the ViV, yu can als use Vice Clicking instead f dwell clicking by saying Tracker Vice. In this mde yu will als need t use the verbal cmmand Drp after using Drag cmmand. (Please see the Vice Activated Cmmands sectin fr mre n vice clicking.) Brwsing the Internet Use yur head mvements t direct the cursr t the tp f yur screen and change Clicks Off t Duble Click and pen yur internet brwser in yur usual way. Alternately, yu can use Vice Clicking. Simply hld the cursr ver the cmmand r prgram yu want t use r pen. There are tw ptins fr typing text. Yu can either use Micrsft s On-Screen Keybard r verbal dictatin if cmpatible speech recgnitin sftware is installed. See the sectin entitled Entering Text t learn mre abut this subject. Change the setting t Single Click, Duble Click, Drag r Right Click, with the buttn n the cntrl bar, r t Vice Clicking by saying, Tracker Vice as needed. T perfrm certain tasks yu will find that yu may have t change these settings t achieve yur gals. Again, at the beginning it is simpler t maximize yur active screen s that yu dn t accidentally pen ther windws when yu dn t want t. 10

11 Remember, if at any time the cursr seems unrespnsive t yur mvements, just g back up t settings and recalibrate the ViV Muse. Related Tpics: Trubleshting Hints Vice Cntrl f the ViV Muse Vice Activated Cmmands fr Standard & Prfessinal Mdels If the ViV Muse is cnfigured t use a speech recgnitin prgram (see the Speech tab subtpic f Viv Muse Cntrl Panel tpic), it will start up in the Vice Clicking mde autmatically. If it des nt detect a speech-recgnitin prgram, r if using the ViV Lite, it will start up in Dwell Clicking mde. T change t vice clicking frm dwell clicking, say, Tracker Vice. This will change the cmmand n the tp f yur screen t Vice Clicking t let yu knw it has been activated. If yur speech-recgnitin prgram ever becmes slw r unrespnsive, the ViV Muse is designed t help yu recver frm that situatin. If yu hver the muse ver the Cntrl Bar where it says 'Vice Clicking', yu will see a hint windw as shwn belw. After a few secnds, it will flip t dwell clicking mde, t allw yu t click n the unrespnsive speech prgram. The amunt f time yu have t hld the muse ver the Cntrl Bar t activate this feature can be set in the ViV Muse Cntrl Panel, under the Advanced tab (Dwell hver time). While in Vice Clicking mde, the ViV Muse will recgnize the Click Cntrl Cmmands shwn belw. Yur ViV Muse knws a lt f vice cmmands. Tracker Fast Speeds up the tracker s mvements after Tracker Slw. Tracker Left Mves cursr t the left. Tracker Right Mves cursr t the right. 13 Prgram Cntrl Cmmands Tracker Calibrate Begins calibratin. Tracker Camera Turns n camera when yu first start the ViV Muse. Tracker Disable Turns ViV Muse pinter ff temprarily. Yu can still enter text. Tracker Enable Turns ViV Muse back n after being disabled. Tracker Settings Opens the ViV Muse settings dialg. Related Tpics: ViV Muse Cmmand Reference Main tabs n ViV Muse prgram Entering Text There are at least three ways t enter text with the ViV Muse: a) Dictatin: yu speak entire phrases and sentences, and they are entered int the dcument. This is available with the Dragn, e-speaking, and Micrsft speech ptins. b) Spelling: yu prnunce individual letters and numbers, which are entered ne-by-ne int the dcument. This is available with all the speech ptins. c) On-screen keybard: In dwell-clicking mde, yu can type letters by clicking n a sftware keybard. Nte: There is ne primary way t enter text with ViV Lite, which is with an n-screen keybard. In dwell-clicking mde, yu can type letters and/r numbers by clicking n a sftware keybard. 13

14 Standard & Prfessinal Dictatin With Dragn Naturally Speaking and e-speaking, dictatin is built int thse prgrams, s yu dictate as usual. The Viv Muse is nt invlved with the dictatin. With the Micrsft speech ptin, the ViV Muse prvides cmmands t prvide a very simple dictatin interface. Nte that if yu desire a mre sphisticated dictatin interface, we recmmend yu purchase a specialized dictatin prgram. T start dictatin, issue the cmmand Tracker Dictate. The ViV Muse pinter will stp mving and the speech engine will listen fr yur wrds and phrases and type them in. Nte that results are usually best if yu prnunce cmplete phrases, rather than individual wrds. Frm the dictatin mde, yu can enter individual letters by saying Tracker Spell, r yu can return t nrmal ViV Muse pinting by saying Tracker Pint r Tracker Enable. Spelling With Dragn and e-speaking, spelling is dne with the usual way yu spell using thse prgrams. With the Pilfius ptin, the spelling is always enabled. When using the Micrsft speech ptin, yu can start entering individual letters by saying Tracker Spell. When spelling with Micrsft r Pilfius, yu use the internatinal-standard phnetic alphabet belw. When in spelling mde, the ViV muse displays the handy 'cheat-sheet' belw fr yur reference. Frm the spelling mde, yu can change t entering entire phrases by saying Tracker Dictate, r yu can return t nrmal ViV Muse pinting by saying Tracker Pint r Tracker Enable. 14

15 Cntrl, Shift, and Alt keys Yu can type capital letters and use the shift and cntrl keys with the ViV Muse. Fr example, t type an 'A', say "capital" r "shift", wait fr the cnfirmatin click frm the ViV Muse, then say 'Alpha'. T d a cntrl-x, yu can say "cntrl", then say "x-ray". Say "Caps Lck" t press the Caps Lck key if yu want t type a series f capital letters. T press the Alt key, say the cmmand Alt Key. Typing Numbers T type numbers, say the wrd "number", then the digit between "zer" and "nine." Fr example, t type the number 2008, say "number tw", "number zer", "number zer", "number eight." 15

19 Lite Entering Text There is ne primary way t enter text with ViV Lite, which is with an n-screen keybard. In dwell-clicking mde, yu can type letters and/r numbers by clicking n a sftware keybard. Main Tabs n ViV Prgram ViV Muse Cntrl Panel and Settings Intrductin The ViV Muse prgram has been designed t start with settings that will be suitable fr mst users. Other than the cmmands used t change the way the prgram respnds t yu, few, if any ther tabbed settings shuld need t be change. If yu decide adjustments must be made, familiarize yurself with the fllwing screen displays befre altering the settings. The numbers and check marks yu see displayed are the recmmended settings. If utilizing speech recgnitin, yu can say Tracker Calibrate and Tracker Vice in any f these tabs. If at any time yu find yurself in the Settings mde when yu dn t want t be simply click OK t resume using the ViV Muse. When yu make changes t the Settings yu can click Apply t activate them if yu may want t make additinal settings. Click OK t activate the changes and clse the windw. T ensure the changes t yur settings are available the next time yu use the ViV Muse, use the 'Save Settings' buttn. Yu can use the 'Settings...' buttn t save r lad specialized settings t ther file names s that they aren't autmatically laded. 20

21 Start Up Tab When yu first click n Settings the Start up tab screen will appear. Here yu can activate Tracker Camera and Tracker Calibrate with dwell clicking. Yu can als redisplay the T begin instructins by checking the designated bx. 'Time t verify calibratin' determines the amunt f time yu have t place the pinter f the OK buttn right after calibratin. If yu have nt psitined the pinter ver the buttn in this amunt f time, the calibratin prcess will be repeated autmatically. Calibratin Target Time determines the amunt f time the Bulls Eye will pause in each f the different psitins n the screen during calibratin. General Tab - Allws yu t change varius timing, usage and muse settings. 21

22 Mde Increment Delay determines the amunt f time between click ptins when navigating click cmmand settings. (i.e., changing between Clicks Off, Single Click, Drag, etc.) Adjust Pinter at Edges f Screen, when checked, will re-align the pinter if it gets ut f sync with the head and minimize unnecessary mvement by the user. If it is checked, when the user mves the pinter past the edge f the screen in any directin as sn as they mve in the ppsite directin the pinter will mve away frm the edge. If it is nt checked, the pinter desn t start mving in the ppsite directin until the user s head is at the same psitin as when the pinter reached the edge f the screen. Hide Cntrl Bar puts the bar with the Vice Clicking buttn int the system tray at the bttm-right f yur screen, instead f placing it at the tp f the screen. This is useful if yu are running lw n screen space. 'Enabled with cntrl key': Fr even mre cntrl while in Dwell Click mde yu can hld dwn the Ctrl key t avid clicking. In this mde, the pinter mves nly when yu are pressing the cntrl key. Clicks are nt made until yu release the cntrl key. If yu press any ther keys while hlding the cntrl key, n click will be made when yu release the key. This can be helpful when reading lng dcuments r news stries. Sme peple find it is easier t use the cmputer in this mde, because it feels mre like using the regular muse in sme ways. Nte: If yu use the cntrl key mde with Vice Clicking, be sure t release the cntrl key befre issuing the vice-click cmmands. The ViV Muse will nt d the clicks if yu issue the cmmands while the cntrl key is still pressed. 'Change click mde instantly' causes the dwell-click type t instantly flip t the next clicking type (fr example, frm single click t drag) when yu mve the pinter ver the cntrl bar buttn. 22

23 When unchecked, the prgram waits fr a bit befre ding s. If yu find that yu accidentally change dwell-click type frequently, try un-checking this bx. Disable n Muse Mve allws yu t verride the ViV Muse autmatically whenever yu use the cmputer s manual muse. Muse Revert Time determines hw lng the manual muse must be statinary after use befre the system autmatically reverts back t the ViV Muse. 'Switch behavir' allws yu t use a single keystrke r a USB switch (prgrammed t act like a keybard keystrke) fr varius ViV Muse functins. The number in 'Key' defines which key yu want t use. Fr example, 19 is the Pause key, 20 is the CapsLck key, 27 is the Esc key, 144 is the NumLck key and 145 is ScrllLck. The apprpriate key depends n what yu use it fr, t minimize side effects. If 'Slw' is checked, the switch will cause a click f the type shwn in the cntrl bar. If 'Slw' is checked, the switch acts t g between nrmal pinting and slw mtin pinting fr better aiming. Calibrate will cause a recalibratin. (This key will always d a 'Tracker Camera' and a 'Tracker Calibrate' when the ViV Muse is first started.) Speed Tab Allws yu t make incremental adjustments t the speed that the muse mves verall, and while yu are perfrming specific actins. Yu can adjust ViV Muse speeds independently while mving hrizntally r vertically. Check the Keep Tgether bx if yu want the speeds in bth directins t be the same. Aut adjust bx, when checked, tells the ViV Muse t use the settings in that panel fr different cntexts. This als enables the ViV Muse t help yu zer in n small bjects. When 23

24 unchecked, the pinter mves at the same speed in all applicatins. Menu adjusts the speed f the muse in varius menus. Task Bar adjusts speed while navigating the task bar at the bttm f the screen. Title Bar adjusts the speed when selectins are being made frm title bar at the tp f the windw. Typing adjusts the speed the muse travels while typing. Dwell Clicking Tab - Enables yu t change dwell time and sensitivity f the cursr. There are multiple tabs where yu can set the dwell time and the dwell sensitivity fr varius circumstances. The "Dwell clicking" bug is fr the nrmal peratin f clicking with dwell. The "Typing" tab allws yu t have different settings fr n-screen typing. The "Slw Dwell" mde is fr clicking during the slw-mtin head tracking, which is enabled with the "First dwell just slws" buttn, described belw. Dwell Time determines the amunt f time in secnds that yu must hld the cursr in place befre a click ccurs. Dwell Sensitivity determines hw steady yu must be in the placement f the cursr t get a click. (A higher number lets yu be farther away.) 24

25 'Aut dwell click type' enables the Aut Click feature t be used during dwell clicking - with this feature, the ViV Muse attempts t chse the apprpriate type f click fr what yu are ding. 'Re-center frm crners', when selected, causes the ViV Muse t re-center the muse pinter if yu hld the pinter in any f the fur crners f the screen fr a few secnds. This is like saying the 'Tracker Center' cmmand, but with dwell clicking. 'First dwell just slws', when selected, causes the ViV Muse t perate in a tw-phase mde. This may be useful if yu have truble placing the pinter exactly where yu want. When yu first dwell, instead f a click happening, yu will hear a sund effect, and the pinter will mve much mre slwly, allwing yu t place it mre accurately. Nw, when yu dwell, a click will happen. 26 The list n the left shws the prgrams that ViV Muse knws abut. T tell the ViV Muse which speech-recgnitin prgram yu prefer t use, select it by clicking n it and press the ---> key t set it as yur Preferred Speech Prgram. T use yur cmputer's built-in speech recgnitin capabilities, select the "Micrsft" ptin, if it appears in the Speech Prgram Optins list. When the ViV Muse is started, it checks fr yur preferred speech prgram first. (Nte that setting the Preferred Speech Prgram des nt start that speech prgram immediately - it nly tells the ViV Muse t use this prgram when it starts up.) The 'Aut detect' ptin tells the ViV Muse t check fr any f the recgnized speech-recgnitin prgrams. In aut-detect mde, if n ther speech-recgnitin prgrams are fund, the ViV Muse will start the built-in Micrsft prgram. Click n Cnfigure Prgram t set up the preferred speech-recgnitin prgram t recgnize the ViV Muse cmmands. Fllw any additinal instructins that may be prvided. Mst speech recgnitin prgrams will need t be restarted befre they will recgnize the ViV Muse cmmands that have just been installed. Once yu cnfigure yur speech-recgnitin prgram, yu shuld nt have t use the 'Cnfigure Prgram' buttn fr that prgram again, unless yu re-install it. Aut-start n launch shuld be checked if yu want the ViV Muse t start the preferred speech prgram when yu start the ViV Muse. Hwever, if yu typically have the speech prgram running befre using the ViV Muse, dn't check this buttn. 27 Vide Tab Vide Tab - Enables yu t change the camera and vide settings. Nte: Since the dialg bxes belw change the web cam image, yu may have t d a 'Tracker Calibrate' after yu have changed settings as described belw. The first white bx can be used t select between multiple cameras, if yu have multiple vide devices installed n yur cmputer. If the first white bx is empty, use the dwn arrw t scrll thrugh yur camera ptins. After yu select the equipment if this bx appears click OK and fllw the instructins. Then after yu have recalibrated, return t the Vide tab in Settings and save. 27

28 Camera Speed shuld be kept at Full Speed unless yu re using an lder cmputer. Sme speech recgnitin sftware can als cause cmputers t slw. Checking the 'Shw Vide' bx will display yur image. 'Help set up web cam' will pen a help file with step-by-step instructins fr cnfiguring yur web cam apprpriately if it is nt prviding the perfrmance yu need. Fr example, if the frame rate shwn is belw 14, yu may need t make adjustments t the webcam t crrect this fr smther pinting. If using a very inexpensive web cam (nt recmmended), and yu are having prblems cntrlling the pinter, check the bx in the lwer right and click Apply Settings. This will add a stabilizatin buttn t the Start up tab. If yu find that the web cam is nt ding a satisfactry jb f tracking yur mvements, g back and click Stabilize and Apply Settings. If this is the camera yu will usually use click 'Save Settings' befre clicking 'OK.' 28

29 Imprtant: This windw als shws the frame rate, which can be helpful in prblem-slving. Typically, rates at r abve 14 indicate gd perfrmance; lwer rate may indicate need fr adjustment. If yu see a frame rate that is lw, please g thrugh the steps shwn in the fllwing figures. Vide Stream Enables yu t make adjustments t vide image quality. Nte: The camera may stp wrking while the "Vide Stream" dialg bx is up, because this changes the peratin f the webcam. Frame rate determines hw fast the vide is cming frm the camera. Ideally it shuld be abve therwise it may be wrthwhile t make sme adjustments. (See sectin n Trubleshting if adjustments becme necessary.) Clr Space / Cmpressin cntrls the density f images. (I420 is recmmended.) Output Size determines hw detailed the image being prduced is. (apprximately 320 x 240 is best.) Vide Quality Settings allws yu t adjust picture quality as yu wuld a TV. Keep in mind this cmmand activates menus supplied by the individual web cam manufacturers, s actual cntents and lay-ut may vary. 32 These TV type adjustments affect hw yu see yurself n the screen. Once yu begin using the ViV Muse this screen minimizes s yu see yurself nly during calibratins. T change the gain r camera expsure adjustment fr different lighting, adjust the slide bars fr Expsure and Gain (unclick the Aut ) until desired image is achieved. The Image Orientatin ptins change yur image n the screen. Cautin: Selecting "Mirrred" makes it very difficult t cntrl yur ViV Muse. In the event yu check "Mirrred" while using ViV and it begins the calibratin prcess, exit ViV Muse. After yu restart and turn the camera n, but befre yu calibrate, pen the Vide Tab, click n Vide Device, g t the Advanced Tab and uncheck this selectin. (If yu want t see what yur image lks like temprarily yu can check them, but dn t click OK r Apply while they are checked.) Always keep the Image Orientatin n "Nrmal" while using the ViV Muse. The Anti Flicker setting shuld be set fr the area where yu are. 32

33 Trubleshting Hints ViV Muse gives errr when yu try t start it in Vista Befre running ViV Muse the first time (and pssibly, after an upgrade), yu must: 1) Right-click n Viv Muse, and select Run As Administratr. 2) If it pps up anther dialg asking fr ALLOW, click ALLOW. If yu d nt d this yu may get an errr such as: "Culd nt initialize applicatin. Errr 42 (IPM) Please cntact technical supprt". Camera Restart by starting ViV Muse and clicking Turn n Camera. If yur camera desn t seem t be functining prperly, g t Settings then Vide. Make sure camera is set t Full Speed. Als check that yur Frame Rate is at least 10, and ideally at 14 r abve. If it isn t, click Vide Device then Advanced and make sure Lw Light Bst and Clr Bst bxes are unchecked. (Having these advanced webcam features n ften causes the webcam t perate mre slwly.) Mre details abut these settings can be fund in the Vide Tab tpic. Fr sme cmputers Autmatic Gain Cntrl in this Advanced tab shuld be OFF. Hwever, if it is ff (unchecked) make sure expsure time is set t 1/15 secnd r faster. Click n the Vide Stream buttn. Frame rate shuld be relatively fast, such as 25 r 30. Clr Space/Cmpressin shuld NOT be RGB24, but a cmpressed frmat such as I420. Output size shuld be abut 320 x 240. Click n the Vide Quality Settings buttn. Typically, it des nt affect frame rate, but yu can try t set the aut buttn f Gain t nt checked if the frame rate is being t slw. Try mving the gain slide cntrl bar clse t the tp befre rechecking yur frame rate. Cursr If yur cursr des nt seem t be respnding prperly t yur mvements, the easiest way t get things back in sync is t issue the 'Tracker Enable' cmmand. This will lk fr yur face and start the pinter accrdingly. If that desn't help, yu can g t Settings and click n Calibrate, r say 'Tracker Calibrate' if yu are using a Speech Recgnitin prgram. Remember t always get int the psitin yu want t be in befre calibrating s that yu are still when the camera begins calibratin. 33

34 Micrphne and Speech Recgnitin (Standard & Prfessinal Mdels) First check that micrphne is clse enugh t yu and directed twards yur muth. Make sure it is plugged int the prper receptacle recgnized by yur cmputer. Check batteries fr strength and installatin; turn micrphne n. If the micrphne still desn t seem t be functining prperly g t yur Cntrl Panel t make sure that the crrect device is being used. Open Sunds and Audi Devices then click the Vice r Audi tab. Under Vice Recrding check t see if the default device is set t yur speech recgnitin micrphne, NOT the web cam micrphne. If it is set t yur web cam s micrphne, change the setting. It is always gd t test yur hardware after checking r adjusting this setting. Smetimes, ther sftware may change the settings f the micrphne gain, s check t make sure it is nt turned lw. It s als pssible that yu need t re-train the vice recgnitin sftware t mre accurately understand yur speech. 35 Advanced Tab Advanced Tab - Enables yu t change fcus, drag abut times, and ther settings within tw tabs: Fine-tune mtin & Other advanced settings. Fine-tune mtin Tracker Slw Speed is the relative speed f the pinter when yu use 'Tracker Slw' cmmand. Max Speed Factr cntrls hw much faster than nrmal the cursr is allwed t mve if the prgram detects a discrepancy between where the head is pinted and where the cursr is. 'Fcus Distance', 'Fcus Speed', and 'Fcus Time': Fcus Distance is a distance in pixels. If yu hld the pinter within this distance fr the 'Fcus Time' length f time, the ViV Muse decides yu are trying t fcus n a small bject. Then, it slws the speed dwn t the 'Fcus Speed' amunt until yu click r until yu mve the pinter away frm the fcused area. Other advanced settings 35

36 Drag Abrt Time determines the amunt f time the prgram allws t execute a drag befre it decides yu really didn't want t drag. It will then autmatically perfrm the 'drp' actin after that amunt f time. Dwell Hver Time determines the amunt f time it takes t put the ViV Muse int dwell clicking mde when yu hld the pinter ver the cntrl bar. This may be useful, fr example, if yu are using a speech recgnitin prgram that gets slw r unrespnsive, and yu want t click n the speech-recgnitin interface t regain cntrl. Aut Center after clicks when checked, allws yu t direct the cursr t autmatically return t the center f the screen after each click. Select number f secnds this takes t ccur. This feature was requested by ne f ur first users. Enable dwell clicks in system tray may be useful when a speech recgnitin prgram is running. Smetimes the speech-recgnitin prgram can slw dwn r becme unrespnsive, but it r the ViV muse may be fund nly by their icns in the system tray (the lwer right-hand icns n yur screen). If this bx is checked, yu can always use dwell clicking in the system tray, even if ViV Muse is in Vice Click mde. Adjust Brightness allws the prgram t autmatically adjust t varius light cnditins. High Pririty Prcess when checked enables the ViV prgram t btain sufficient prcessr resurces t run smthly when dwnlading vides and games. If vides r games aren t running quite as fast as yu want, try un-checking this bx, but keep in mind the ViV Muse may be smewhat less respnsive if yu d. Allw Dwell by Vice when checked will allw yu t switch t Dwell Clicking by using the vice cmmand, Tracker Dwell. Shw Cntext when checked will display the cntext being viewed in the settings bx. 36

39 Keeping ViV Settings When Installig A New Versin Intrductin Under Windws, when yu install a new versin f the ViV Muse, yur settings files will be replaced with the factry default settings. If yu have made settings adjustments and yu wuld like t keep them, yu may wish t save yur settings file t the desktp prir t the installatin. After installing the new sftware, yu can lad the settings file frm the desktp. Saving yur settings file t the desktp prir t installing new sftware Start the ViV Muse Click n the Settings Files... buttn. The fllwing dialg bx will appear: 39

40 Click n the Save settings As... buttn. The Save As dialg bx will appear. Navigate t the Desktp as shwn. Give the file any name yu want, such as My settings.set. Click n Save, and yur settings file is saved t the desktp. Nw yu can install the new ViV Muse sftware withut having t manually reset all the settings in the new versin. Alternate methd: If yu wish t save yur settings file withut starting the ViV Muse sftware, navigate t C:\Prgram 40
