1 Number Place Names NS-PV 1 Memorizing the most common number place names will be much easier once you recognize how the pattern of tens and hundreds names are repeated as prefixes for each group of three numbers places. These groups of three number places are called periods. The periods are separated by commas. Periods are named according to the name of the first (right-most) number place they contain. These names are listed below and the number places they refer to are shaded grey. Once you memorize the period names, you can easily remember the names of the other two number places in each period by noticing that (except in the case of the ones period) you just attach the words ten and hundred in front of them. There are more number places than are shown here (actually an infinite amount) but these are number places that are commonly used and are the most important to memorize. trillions billions millions thousands ones,,,, tens hundreds ten thousands hundred thousands ten millions hundred millions ten billions hundred billions ten trillions hundred trillions 01 Math Plus Motion, LLC

2 Identifying Number Places - Set 1 NS-PV Instructions: Use your knowledge of number place names to identify the digits asked for in each problem below. 1 8, 0 What digit is in the hundreds place? 9, What digit is in the ones place?, 1 0 What digit is in the tens place? 4 Invisible Number Places Instructions: Number places are usually invisible, so you need to be able to identify the digits they contain even when they are not shown. For each multi-digit number below, circle the digit that is in the number place listed. NS-PV 1 tens place 1 0,, thousands place ones place 9 hundreds place 0, ten thousands place 1 9, millions place 1 0 0, tens place 9 9 8, 8 hundred thousands place ,, 9 9 ten thousands place ten thousands place 0, 1 11 hundreds place 8 1, 1 hundred millions place ,, 1 ones place, 1 1 millions place ,, 1 billions place 9 0,, 8 0, ten millions place 9 1 0, 1 trillions place 1, 0, 0, 1 1, 8, 1 0, 9 8, 1 18 ten billions place 19 hundreds thousands place 8 0 0, 1 0 hundred billions place, 1 0 0, Math Plus Motion, LLC
