Cmpany Dssier in-depth cmpany and industry infrmatin, with the ptin t build cmpany lists r cmparisn charts. Quick News Search (Default): (This type f search nly cvers the mst recent tw years f news surces. Fr cverage mre than tw years ld, chse Guided News Search see belw.) 1. Enter yur search term(s) r phrase.* 2. Quick News Search assumes an OR relatinship between yur terms, s, fr example, entering bush and campaign will lk fr all dcuments cntaining either f thse terms. Hwever, the results cntaining bth terms will display first. 3. *T search fr a phrase, enclse the wrds in qutatins; i.e., entering campaign finance refrm will lk fr thse wrds, in that rder, nly. 4. Use the Date: drp-dwn list t chse the time perid fr yur search. 5. Click Search. Guided News Search: (Use this type f search fr mre cmplicated searches, r t fcus yur search mre clearly. This can als be used t search fr news frm a wide range f dates.) 1. Select the news categry t be searched. 2. Select a news surce. NOTE: the categry selected in Step 1 will determine the chices available in Step 2. Examples: Categry = University News / Surces = The Chrnicle f Higher Educatin and University Wire Categry = Arts & Sprts News / Surces = Bk, mvie, music, & play reviews; Entertainment news; Sprts News; r Knight-Ridder/Tribune Arts & Sprts News 3. Enter search terms in the bxes prvided. Select the type f search frm the drp-dwn bxes t the right, i.e., authr, full-text, headline text, etc. 4. Use the and r nt drp-dwn bxes t limit the search; use r t expand the search. (fr infrmatin n using the ther available chices, chse Help frm the right end f the black header bar, then chse Cnnectrs ) 5. Chse the date range desired fr yur search, r enter a custm date range. 6. If desired, yu may als limit yur search t specific publicatins, i.e, New Yrk Times r Washingtn Pst. 7. Click Search.

2 Example: Results: LexisNexis ffers users several ptins fr viewing results. T select a viewing ptin, click the apprpriate gray tab frm the tp f the list. In all ptins, results are srted by relevance. Hwever, yu may chse t display the result in date rder by selecting the Srt by: Date link appearing underneath the ptin tabs. DOCUMENT LIST (default) Results are displayed in shrt citatin frm, in a numbered list, fr quick brwsing. T read any article, click the red linked text. EXPANDED LIST Displays a numbered list with each search wrd in cntext surrunded by apprximately five wrds. KWIC Key Wrds In Cntext displays yur search term(s) surrunded by apprximately 20 wrds f text frm the dcument. KWIC frmat helps yu quickly determine whether r nt a dcument applies t yur research tpic. FULL Displays the full text f an article. In the DOCUMENT LIST r EXPANDED LIST views, articles may be tagged fr later retrieval by clicking the check bx t the left f each article. When all desired articles have been checked, chse the Print r tabs at tp right. *Please nte: when chsing t print r tabbed items frm a list, nly the citatins will print r be sent, nt the cmplete articles. T print r articles, see belw. Print r T print an article: 1. Retrieve the article by selecting its link frm a list, r by scrlling thrugh the KWIC r Full displays. 2. Select the Print tab at the tp right f the display. 3. Click Display Dcument. 4. Use the Print cmmand cmpatible with yur brwser. 3 T an article: 1. Retrieve the article as described abve. 2. Select the tab at the tp right f the display. 3. Enter the desired address. Yu may als add a brief nte t the message. 4. Click The text that was displayed, whether a list r KWIC view r Full text, will be ed t the address specified. BUSINESS RESEARCH Cmpany Dssier Quick Search (Default): 1. Frm the Quick Inf (hme) screen, use the Cmpany Dssier bx n the lwer right. 2. Enter a cmpany name r ticker symbl in the apprpriate bx, fr example, <micrsft> r <msft>. NOTE: using the ticker symbl will yield mre pertinent results. 3. Click Search t generate a Cmpany Dssier Snapsht Reprt. 4. If yur search retrieves mre than ne cmpany, chse frm the list f cmpany names by clicking n the cmpany title yu desire. Cmpany Dssier Advanced Search: 1. Select the Advanced Search Optins link in the Cmpany Dssier bx. 2. Yu may chse frm three types f Advanced Search: Find a Cmpany Create a Cmpany List (Default) Cmpare Cmpanies 3. Select the ptin yu want t use by clicking its name under the red Cmpany Dssier tab. Find a Cmpany: (Use this feature t generate a cmpany reprt when yu dn t knw the exact name r ticker symbl r t generate a list f cmpanies meeting certain criteria.) 1. Enter as much infrmatin as yu knw in the apprpriate bxes. 2. Yu may chse t generate a reprt fr the cmpany s headquarters by checking the Headquarters bx. 3. Click Find. Create a Cmpany List: (Use this feature t generate a list f cmpanies that meet the criteria yu specify.) 1. Enter infrmatin in the apprpriate bxes fr the type f list yu want fr example, all cmpanies in a certain city, all cmpanies in a specified industry with less than 1,000 emplyees, etc. Yu d nt have t enter a cmpany name. 2. Yu can specify the type f infrmatin that will be included fr each cmpany in yur list. Scrll t the bttm f the screen t view a list f pssibilities. 4 3. Click Find. Cmpare Cmpanies: (Generate a reprt shwing financial infrmatin fr up t five different cmpanies.) 1. Enter names r ticker symbls fr the cmpanies yu wish t cmpare. 2. Click Cmpare. 3. The resulting reprt may be dwnladed as an Excel file, which can then be pened as a spreadsheet. Cmpany Dssier Snapsht Reprt: The default Snapsht Reprt prvides basic infrmatin abut the cmpany. Optins fr additin infrmatin are displayed in the sidebar. Click n the ptin desired t display that infrmatin. In the News prvides articles abut the cmpany frm newspapers, magazines, and industry jurnals. Business Infrmatin prvides links t varius analytic and research reprts, and a list f majr cmpetitrs. Crprate Hierarchy displays a list f subsidiaries and branch ffices. Financial Infrmatin shws net incme and sales figures, annual assets and ther figures, and recent SEC filings. Legal Infrmatin prvides links t recent curt decisins regarding r invlving the cmpany. Intellectual Prperty Infrmatin prvides infrmatin n recent patents, trademarks, and cpyright infrmatin. References generates a list f links t reprts and ther dcuments that were used t cmpile the infrmatin in the Cmpany Dssier. 5 Basic Business Research: 1. Chse Business frm the list f Academic Search Frms fund n the left side f the hme screen. 2. Select the type f infrmatin yu wish t search fr: T find business articles frm newspapers, jurnals, etc., chse ne f the ptins under News. T find articles n accunting tpics, chse the Accunting ptin under Accunting Literature. T find crprate prfiles, filings, and reprts, chse ne f the ptins under Cmpany Infrmatin. T find directry infrmatin fr industries r cmpanies, chse Directries under Business Resurces. 3. Enter search terms as apprpriate. Different chices made in Step 2, abve, will result in different types f search screens. In sme cases, yu have the ptin f chsing either a Basic r Guided Search by selecting the tabs at the tp f the search dialg bx. NOTE: LexisNexis ffers a vast array f resurces fr business students and prfessinals. Hwever, sme f its features may prve cnfusing r cmplicated.
