3 Body Paragraph Setup How to structure your body paragraphs: 1. Topic Sentence (TS): tells what the paragraph is about. This is in your own words! Everything else in the paragraph should connect back to this sentence. Ex. In Beowulf, Beowulf (character) is the literary archetype of a hero (literary archetype) because he is selfless(reason 1), brave in the face of danger(reason 2),and relentless in his pursuit of justice (reason 3).

14 In-Text Citations After a quote, you must give credit to the author. You will do this two different ways: 1. Book Quotes 2. Galileo Quotes

15 In-Text Citations for Book Quotes 1. Book quotes: for your Beowulf quotes, you will simply list the LINE NUMBER after the quotation mark. Ex: spawned in that slime (19).

16 In-Text Citations for Galileo Quotes 2. Galileo quotes: for your Galileo quotes, you will list the author s last name and page number where you found the quote (if you have it). Ex: As a descendant of Cain, Grendel is an incorrigible felon and exile, a perverse form of humanity, and a cannibalistic giant (Anderson 53). NOTE: If there is no author listed, then you will use the title of the article, in quotation marks

17 Notes about Citations DO NOT INCLUDE THE ENTIRE MLA CITATION. That goes on your work cited page only. Book quote: is just the line number. NOTE: quote (line number). NOTE: You simply put the line number not line or line # or # Galileo quote: Author s last name and page number. NOTE: quote (Last Name page number). NOTE: You simply put the page number not page or pg # or # or any combination of that.

18 What s the big deal about punctuation? It s proper MLA style! It may not seem like a big deal, but it could cost you big points! Rules for punctuating with a citation: Do NOT include any punctuation in the quotation. The period goes AFTER the citation. Think about the citation being A PART OF the sentence! Ex: New Gucci Mane, I'm addicted to Franklins No, we not the same, I'm evolving (Mane). period after citation!
