Giulia Caparrelli Professor Lopez COM December 2015 First Times, New Beginnings : Music Video For The Song Fyrsta by Ólafur Arnalds portraying the highlights of both the human and the natural world The video opens with a black screen where a short poem slowly fades in. As the writing disappears, the black background dissolves into a nocturnal natural landscape. It is followed by a long series of shots that emotionally portray beautiful first moments and new beginnings taken from both the human world and the natural one: a rising sun, a blossoming flower, smiling people, happy childhood moments, first discoveries, decisive solo travels, people walking down important paths, love experiences and meaningful relationships. The cutting is moderately slow, and follows the pace of the music; the shots are ordered thematically, and linked according to similar patterns. The video closes with a dark room where the light slowly comes in from the left to the right revealing a mirror; it reflects a wall on which pictures taken from all the previous shots of this video are hung. Finally, at the bottom right of the screen the word Fyrsta fades in.
Music Video for Fyrsta by Ólafur Arnalds VIDEO Black Background. AUDIO Music: Fades in. The short poem 6:50am by Mitch Welling: i want to go to sleep with the confidence/ that there s nothing more beautiful than a still morning/ or being in the presence of a world that feels/ new again fades in on the right, in white letters, each verse at a time, slowly. Writing Fades Out. (0-21) LS: Black Background dissolves into a natural, nocturnal landscape: the sky is starry; there is a road in the middle, mountains in the horizon. Everything stands still. (22-28) LS: Time lapse from night to dawn. Some feeble light starts to come in; the sun rises slowly from the horizon, between the mountains. There is visible dust in the air, and the picture looks quite grainy; the colors are faded. (29-35) CU: Time-lapse of a rosy blossoming flower, among the dewy morning grass. (36-39)
POV SHOT: A person giving a bunch of white and rosy flowers. (40-43) CU: Bunch of flowers. Overexposed and lens flare picture. (44-50) XCU: Smile of a young woman. Over-exposed and lens flare picture. (51-58) CU: Smiling face of a male child, looking up to the sky. ( ) XCU: Hand of the smiling child. Small snowflakes start to fall on his hand. ( ) Low-angle Shot: Snowy sky. Snow falling down delicately. ( ) MS: Male child twirling in the snow. SPFX: Slow motion. ( ) POV shot (Moving shot): A young man takes the hand of a young woman and invites her to dance. Camera follows the two people dancing at a party. SPFX: Slow motion.
( ) XCU: Open lined-paper journal. Person writing the words Today I. ( ) XCU: Flipping pages of the same journal. There are old pictures of happy childhood memories, i.e. family gatherings, holidays at the seaside... ( ) LS: Seaside. Waves crashing on the shore. ( ) CU: Child s feet hesitantly entering the cold sea water. (Shot from behind) ( ) CU: child s feet while he s making his first uncertain steps at home. (Shot from behind) ( ) LS: Back window of a train moving forward, leaving the rails behind. ( ) CU: young man s feet while he s walking on the edge of the rails. ( ) CU: young woman s feet while she s walking in a crowded
airport, carrying her luggage. She s following a blue line that ends with a sign saying departures. ( ) CU: Plane s window. Outside the sun is setting. The young woman places her hand on the window. ( ) LS: Statue of Liberty and NYC skyline, while the sun is rising. ( ) MS: young man from behind facing a bright window, and moving towards it. ( ) XCU: male brown eyes opening slowly. ( ) XCU: female blue smiling eyes looking on the right. ( ) LS: Blossoming peach tree boulevard. The wind blows and rosy flowers fill the air. ( ) LS: Seagulls flying over the sea. The shot is very bright. ( )
CU: Backlit open hand passing over shining sun. ( ) CU: Hand reaching out to and finally touching pregnant belly. ( ) XCU: holding hands. Overexposed and lens flare picture. ( ) MS: Back lit young woman walking towards the sun. ( ) MS: Dark room. Light slowly comes in from the left revealing a mirror; it reflects a wall on which pictures taken from all the previous shot of this video are hung. and Fades out. The writing Fyrsta fades in on the bottom right, in white letters. ( )
Giulia Caparrelli Professor Lopez COM December 2015 Music Video Process Paper My final project consisted in making a music video for the song Fyrsta by the Icelandic musician and composer Ólafur Arnalds. The song is entirely instrumental and relies on two main instruments, piano and strings. Its mood is extremely inspiring, soulful and seems to guide the listener throughout a delicate, emotional journey. The overall atmosphere is also quite melancholic and bittersweet. The title, Fyrsta, is an Icelandic word meaning first in English. Thus, in the video I wanted to play with the title and portray all the most memorable moments and emotions linked to the first times and new beginnings, both in human life and in the natural world. My main goal was to visually enhance the uplifting power of such instrumental music. I wanted to prompt an emotional reaction in the audience, by gently recalling people of all the most beautiful and decisive moments they have experienced in life. I also wanted to arouse a certain feeling of nostalgia into the audience s mind, as if they were looking back at the highlights of their life flashing before their eyes. To visually express nostalgia, I imagined the overall photographic quality to be either faded, grainy, visibly bright and at times with flares, almost as if the shots had come out of a vintage Instagram filter. The main target audience of this video obviously comprises Ólafur Arnalds fans, who may access this video on his personal website, or look it up on YouTube through a specific song search. However, as it incorporates fundamental moments to which anyone can relate
and feel emotionally connected, it can also be featured in other video- sharing websites, for instance Vimeo, and searched for through specific tags such as inspiration, beginning, and life. Speaking of the storyline of this video, it relies on many flashbacks that are linked by the similarity of the experience, or simply by the connection between the various visual subjects. The shots are in fact connected thematically rather than chronologically. As no lyrics is present, I decided to begin the video with a short poem by Mitch Welling - young American musician and artist - to introduce the theme of this video, that is first times, new beginnings. In the final scene, the presence of the mirror reflecting pictures taken from all the moments previously shown in the course of the video metaphorically exemplifies the nostalgic looking back that I wanted to arouse in the audience. The hardest challenge I faced while coming up with ideas and actually writing the script was expressing concepts and emotions implicitly and metaphorically: I did not want to portray these moments too explicitly, but rather creating subtle associations in the mind of the audience. To do so, I decided to incorporate imagery from the natural world to signify human emotions indirectly. Moreover, I tended to concentrate on details, i.e. smiles, eyes, hands, feet, rather than on entire human figures, to place emphasis on the actual feelings and also foster a stronger feeling of identification.
