1 NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 1 NEWSLETTER OF THE HAWKEYE CHAPTER BUICK CLUB OF AMERICA Issue APRIL/MAY ITS SPRING TIME IN IOWA AND BUICKS ARE BLOSSOMING EVERYWHERE Well, we have had a couple really nice days so far this spring, time is here to dust off the Buicks and top off the fluid levels and hit the road with a big grin. Grab a copy of Roger s Buick songs, put the top down, and have a great day. These warm days bring to mind upcoming car shows, cruises and some fun swap meets. So with that thought, here are some events happening this spring and summer that we can all enjoy as members of the Hawkeye Chapter of the BCA. MAY 1st The Gopher State Chapter of the BCA will be hosting its 24th annual Spring Extravaganza car show and swap meet at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St Paul, MN. The show and swap meet will be from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. For information call the hotline, MAY 21st Hawkeye Chapter of the BCA car show and meeting at Lauterbach BUICK/GMC, st ave E in Newton, IA This car show will start at 9:00 am and be over at 2:00. There will be a chapter meeting at 11:00 and lunch served afterwards. Dean has been a gracious host in the past to one of these shows, and it draws a lot of attention from the town. Hope to see as many members there as possible. Great chance to see some old and new Buicks in one location. JUNE 11th Buicks and drag boats. This is an open car show, BBQ and boat race at Little Wall Lake outside of Jewell IA. It may be fun as a group, and I am sure that Rick Young will keep us in the loop on this event. Last year, the Jewell community reached out to the BCA with a fantastic and memorable evening with food, music and fun. Since this car show is part of the Jewell Day s celebration, it would be nice if we as a group can show up and support the town s efforts. Director s message continued on next page
2 NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 2 JULY 5-9th THE BUICK CLUB OF AMERICA NATIONAL MEET, Danvers, MA. This one needs no introduction or explanation. It should be a fantastic venue for a car show. If you have never been there, it s a great town and area to visit and sightsee. JULY 17th The AACA Tall Corn Club of Boone has invited the members of the Hawkeye BCA chapter to join in the Tom Crooks annual Boone Scenic Valley Railroad car show on Sunday July 17th from 1:00 to 4:00. The show will be in the parking lot of the B&SVRR parking lot 225 1Oth St in Boone, IA. Please RSVP to Richard Grieve, AUGUST 18-20th The Heartland Buick Regional in Reedsburg, WI. A great show in a fantastic part of the country, pack the convertible and head north! See you all in Newton. Mark DRAG BOATS COMING BACK TO JEWELL The sound of Blown Big Block Drag Boats is returning to Jewell on Saturday June 11 th. The Upper Midwest Power Boat Association (UMPBA) recently confirmed the details of the event which will feature 40 plus Drag Boats from throughout the Midwest at Little Wall Lake. The Jewell community has become recognized for successfully supporting similar events in recent years. A crowd of 3,000 spectators is expected, with some being bussed in from Des Moines and Omaha. Nationally recognized barbeque cook, Moe Cason, who was recently featured on the TLC Channel, will prepare his award winning fares for the public to enjoy. 2 live bands will also be on hand and a Classic Car Show will be a part of the fun. The UMPBA is looking forward to working with the community and is prepared to give back for local projects. The event will take place in conjunction with Jewell Jubilee Days. Volunteers will be needed to help out that day. More information will be made available in mid- April. Rick Young #39207, President Buick Club of America

6 NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 6 Buick Club of America Please let your organization's members know about the 12th Annual Salisbury Concours d Elegance. We are pleased to announce the 12th Annual Salisbury Concours d Elegance, a nationally recognized exhibition of fine automobiles and other vehicles. This premier event benefits the Salisbury House Foundation and its youth education missions. The Concours is held on Sunday, with related events available on the preceding Friday and Saturday. The Concours is presented on the beautiful grounds of the Salisbury House & Gardens, a historic mansion and museum located on a ten-acre wooded estate in a prestigious residential neighborhood. The elegant mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was featured in the A&E television series, America s Castles ( The Anglophiles ). The Concours is a rain-or-shine event, limited to hard surfaces in the event of wet grounds. A celebration of the fine art and design of the automobile, as well as the designers that created them, the Concours d Elegance organizes 120 automobiles into several classes to be judged by French Rules (an option is available to not be judged). Each class is judged for its elegance and beauty. A points system is NOT used in French Rules judging. Pristine condition, while helpful, is not a requirement of acceptance for the Concours; instead, innovative design and the artistic qualities of the original automobile are prime considerations. The Concours focus is on fine automobiles and other distinctive vehicles built and driven during the Weeks era of the Salisbury House ( ), when the family designed, built and lived in the mansion. The Concours includes vintage vehicles prior to 1923, collectible vehicles up to 1960, and special feature classes that may reflect any period. Criteria for acceptance for exhibition include marque, model, rarity, age, quality, design, innovation, elegance, and adherence to original factory design. In general, automobiles built in 1960 or earlier are sought., Newer automobiles are sometimes considered for Special Feature classes, based on elegance, rarity and design. This year s categories include: The Traditional Classes, presented annually: The Salisbury Classics: Prestige automobiles of luxury and elegance, designed and built during the same era ( ) as the Weeks residency at the Salisbury House. The Antiques: early historic automobiles, through 1922 The Collectibles: automobiles of innovation and distinction ( ) The Special Feature Classes, presented in 2011: The 100th Anniversary of Chevrolet: honoring the genius and entrepreneurship of racecar driver Louis Chevrolet and automotive entrepreneur William Durant. The 125th Anniversary of Mercedes: celebrating one of Europe s finest marques and the creativity and heritage of Gottlieb Daimler, Carl Benz, Emil Jellinek and Wilhelm Maybach. The Exotics: a gathering of some of the world s most beautiful, powerful, rare and expensive contemporary automobiles The Vintage Motorcycles: motorized descendents of the "safety bicycle", from their inception in the second half of the 19th century through the 1970s. The Woodies: featuring the fine craftsmanship and design of hardwood bodies, the original utility vehicle and the luxurious derivatives. As an exhibitor, there is no cost to enter the Salisbury Concours d Elegance. There are modest costs to participate in some of the optional activities. This event benefits the Salisbury House Foundation and its youth education missions. Donations to the Salisbury House Foundation to support its missions of education, house and grounds restoration, and the presentation of the Concours are much appreciated. Schedule of Activities: Gatsby Gala:A Gatsby-era style gala at Salisbury House, Friday evening, September 9th (reservations required). This is one of the prime social events of the year is central Iowa. Cost to be announced. 4th Annual Salisbury Heartlands Driving Tour: A tour around central Iowa on Saturday, September 10th. 7 NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 7 Hawkeye member profile of Jim and Mary Jaeger and their Buicks While Mary and I live in Buffalo, Minnesota, we have long been members of the Hawkeye chapter because we enjoy the people of Hawkeye! I ve been the editor of the Hawkeye newsletter for many years. Living so far away, it was the best way for me to contribute to the chapter. Buicks entered my life when, in 1956, my father purchased a 1956 Buick Super four door sedan, which I am still driving today. This was the year of the great looking Chevrolets and Fords and you can image how disappointed a high school senior was when this huge turquoise and green tank appeared in our driveway. The Buick continued to be a part of our family until 1972 when my mother called and said it was time for a smaller, more economical car. The Buick then came to live with me because she could not part with the car she had become attached to and that had served her so well after my father s death. My wife saw beauty in the car and encouraged me give it some TLC. Soon a 1964 Wildcat convertible joined the group but was lost to a drunk driver who hit it while I was stopped to help a stalled driver. Needing a convertible, we found a 1969 Electra at an auction, previously driven by a little old lady who hit a lot of stuff. One day Mary came home and said she saw a 1956 station wagon. We later found it belonged to one of our children's friends. I tracked it down and purchased it for her birthday, paying $150. That s what it was worth. After lingering at a friend s farm for years, we turned it into a resto-rod. Now it was time for early retirement and a 1993 Roadmaster station wagon joined our Buicks. Then one day our daughter found a 1999 Riviera Silver Arrow. The car impressed me, so when Alan Oldfield said he was selling one of his, our collection continued to grow. Over the years names have been attached to our cars. The 1956 sedan was named Sherman by our kids because of it tank like size, the 1956 wagon has picked up the name Petunia because of its pink, black and white colors, the 1969 is Pickle because of its green pickle color, the 1993 wagon is Harley and I don't know why, and of course the1999 is Arrow. We do have cars other than Buicks. Mary used a 1961 Corvair Lakewood station wagon as her summer driver when she was working and also has a 1986 Dodge pickup.
8 NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 8 Original GS Owners Gather at GS Nationals Article from Alan Oldfield s Buick Stories Among the hundreds of Buicks and Buick lovers at this year's Buick GS Nationals was something that is increasingly hard to find, Buick GS cars still in the hands of the original owners. GS Buicks, still owned by the original owner or by the family of the original owner, lined up together during the Friday car show of the Buick GS Club's annual race-and-car show event at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY. The event, typically held in May, was postponed until October this year due to flooding at the drag strip this spring. GS Club of America founder Richard Lasseter said the original GS owner "reunion" also attracted the attention of Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine, which plans coverage in an upcoming issue.
