5 Double Take Play Movie The set-up watching the film This film is four minutes 22 seconds long. Watch the first one minute and 20 seconds of the film and talk with a partner about what you ve seen so far, using the questions below. How would you describe the young man? What is the evidence for your views? Does the title Double Take give you any clues as to what the film is going to be about? What do you think will happen next, and why? Now watch the rest of the film. After watching the film Go back to your prediction for the film. How accurate was your guesswork? Did anything surprise you? The tagline To help promote the film, you ve been asked to select a tagline, or slogan, for this film. This must: be less than 10 words long give a clue to the story without giving the game away be instantly memorable. Listen to the taglines of the other people in your class. Then compare them with the ones below. Which of all of these taglines do you think most closely represents what the film is about? What goes around comes around. Do unto others as you would be done by. Crime never pays. Wherever you are, someone s watching you. Your own: English and Media Centre, 2007 DOUBLE TAKE & OTHER FILMS 3
6 The structure of the story Write down three things you found interesting or unusual about the way the director has chosen to tell this story. From memory, try to guess: how many different scenes there are in this film how many different locations there are how many different camera shots the film includes in four minutes 22 seconds. A second viewing As you watch the film a second time, watch very closely to see if your predictions were correct. After the second viewing How much do you notice? Try this quick quiz to see how much you ve actually noticed in your viewing and how many different decisions the director of this film had to make. How many different shots are there in this film? What colour is the first bag we see in the film? What was the weather like in this film? What kind of coat is the thief wearing? Can you describe the front door of the thief s house? What colour is the second bag we see? What instrument is used in the theme tune of the film? What does the thief do when he takes the money out of the purse? What are the last sounds you hear in the film? List five things you saw in the bedroom. Share your answers (see page 11). What really happened? In the film, we watch a thief, who is himself being watched and video-recorded by somebody else. Working in pairs, imagine that Partner A is the thief, and Partner B is that unknown somebody else. In role, write down a step-by-step list of what you do in the story and the sequence of events leading to the final scene in the bedroom. Compare your two versions of events. Then discuss what you think happens after the end of the film. 4 DOUBLE TAKE & OTHER FILMS English and Media Centre, 2007
7 The filmmakers rules Double Take was made as an entry for a short film competition run by BBC3 called Mini-Masterpieces, with some very strict rules and a very tight schedule. Here are the rules. Three minutes is the maximum length required. The film should be completed in no more than 10 shots. No props or sets (unless you find them on location). Music is not allowed unless it occurs on location. Only minimal lighting will be available. The camera should be hand-held. No genre movies. No superficial action (murders, weapons, etc). The film must take place in the here and now. Listen to Director Toa Stappard describing the Mini-Masterpieces competition he entered, and his views on these rules. Third time around Now you know some of the background to the film, think about how Toa has used some of these rules to build up the tension in the film. In your group, focus on one of the following: the soundtrack the camerawork the locations (places where the film was shot) the editing of the film. Now report back to the class the three things you feel have the most significant impact in your particular study area. Explain what effect you think each of your three points has in creating atmosphere and suspense in the film. Use the chart on page 6 to help you: write your three features in the appropriate box, and the effect of each one in the thought bubble. As each group reports back, note down their comments in the same way. You may find it easier to do this if the chart is enlarged to A3 size. Use your completed chart to help you share and discuss what you ve noticed about the way the film creates atmosphere and meaning. Talk about what each of the following might add to the tension and narrative of the film: point-of-view shots close-ups and tracking shots the style of the titles and credits. Add the main points of your discussion to the chart. English and Media Centre, 2007 DOUBLE TAKE & OTHER FILMS 5

9 Responding to Double Take Double Take has appeared on a number of short film websites where viewers have been invited to give their own views of the films they have seen there. With a partner, read the statements below, which have been made by different people in response to Double Take, and pick the statement you both most closely agree with. Goes to show what can be achieved with a clever idea and a little budget. Er, what was all that about? Simple, effective, all told visually and without a second of superfluous material. I really don t like films without proper endings they leave you in suspense. Liked the social message! A surprisingly creepy little film it sent shivers up my spine! It s nice to find a film with a moral and no on-screen violence for a change. It looked really cheap and rubbish I could have done better myself! Use your chosen statement as the starting point for a short personal review of the film, to post on one of the short film websites. English and Media Centre, 2007 DOUBLE TAKE & OTHER FILMS 7
