Videos and Animations: Textbook images limit the ability to describe spatial and temporal interactions of macromolecules in the context of the cell. These limitations are typically overcome by depicting steps in a cartoon or in a single image that depicts all steps of the process simultaneously. Static images are great for contemplating each of the steps in the process but an animation 'connects the dots' and conveys the continuity of the process. In developing an animation for CREST, consider ways to make the learning active and interactive. It may be appropriate to include pauses for class discussion. Or you might consider including a drawing that students can label or color after they watch the animation. Don't worry if you are not artistically inclined you'll develop a storyboard (much like cartoon boxes) that will include the script and the action. CBM staff will assist in putting it all together! How to Begin It is very tempting to immediately grab that video camera and start having fun recording all sorts of things. But nine times out of ten, that unplanned footage, while fun and spontaneous, really doesn't work as well as you may have expected. The best way to create a quality piece of media is to plan it out thoroughly. So, go ahead and play with the camera for fun and for brainstorming, but before you start filming your final footage, take a bit of time to plan. STEP 1: The Script The most widely utilized way to start an animation or video is by writing a script. Writing a script forces you to solidify your ideas and consider all the options you have for getting across your main point before ever spending the time recording or animating. Who is your audience? Will you need to provide some background information for this audience? What is the purpose of your animation? What are the learning objectives? Taking time to answer these questions up front will significantly reduce time needed to revise the final product. Scripts can vary significantly. Consider whether you will be more serious or casual. Practice the script to estimate the time your video or animation will be. You may be surprised how quickly a short script becomes a 10 minute animation so be careful how much information you try and pack into each script. It is generally considered better to have several short video clips (with a max of maybe a few minutes

each) than one really long video. Writing a script will make you narrow down your content and focus the purpose of your video or animation. STEP 2: The Storyboard Once your script is complete, you will add images to the text to create what, in essence, is a comic strip of your video or animation. You can also annotate your storyboard to convey movement and action. For example, if you have a portion of your script in which a molecule needs to move quickly across the screen, you may use something like the annotated image below to convey it in your storyboard. There are two main purposes to a storyboard. First and foremost, they force you, as the creator, to hone in your ideas. As you envision the images that will compliment the script, you may need to go back and alter the script a bit. This could be to make the content better match what you have in mind for on the screen or to adjust the timing a in specific section of the video or animation. Second, storyboards help streamline future work on the piece of media. Instead of having to remember every detail and convey those details to the entire group, every team member can have a solid copy of the overall plan for the video or animation. This makes work quicker and communication easier. The follow page contains a sample storyboard design to use as a template. Once the storyboard is complete, it s time to get feedback on several fronts: scientific accuracy (research mentor), classroom usefulness (instructor), production feasibility (CBM staff) and clarity (anyone you can get to look at the storyboard).

STEP 4: At this point, there are two ways to continue You can collect all your script files, storyboard files, and any additional materials you have produced and send them to the CBM as a.zip file. We will work with you to create the necessary animation, audio, and video for your project. 2. You can be a bit more proactive, involved, and creative by producing some of the audio and video yourself. Recording and editing audio and video can be difficult without any experience, but it will also give you a chance to have more creative control than you might by simply passing it off to the CBM. Recording the Audio While it is very common to continue editing and fine tuning a script throughout the storyboarding process, the script needs to be completely finalized before the final recording. While possible, it is not always easy to re record a section of audio to replace a previous recording that has errors. For this reason, you may want to spend just a bit of time making extra sure your storyboard and script flow exactly how you envision them. Remember to compare their current form back to that original goal you set for the project. If you find that any section does not help achieve your learning goal, now is the time to correct it! Once confident in your script and storyboard, you can begin recording. There are countless ways to create audio files today, from high end recording studios to the microphone in a smart phone. Inexpensive computer microphones are also easily available and the CBM is also prepared to facilitate recording. Audi can be recorded and edited using any number of freeware audio programs. The most useful one we have found is Audacity Audio Recording. For simple tasks such as importing sound files, removing sections of the audio, adding pauses and exporting.mp3 or.wav files, Audacity is excellent. Audacity is available at: Additional tutorials and information for the program can also be explored at: Your final audio clips should be saved as either.mp3 or.wav files..mp3 files are ideal because they have the smallest file size..wav files are usually not condensed and so can become very large. Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to hear your audio files while using the tutorial. Some users may have trouble hearing or lack speakers on their computer, while others may just not like listening

and would prefer reading. For these reasons, you should make sure to have your audio recording saved as written text as well. The Video or Animation Does your storyboard require some video footage with a video camera? If so, you can either record your video directly while reading your script, or record your video and then remove the video's audio and overdub the previously recorded audio from your script. We have found this second option often works well because it frees you up to focus mainly on the visual aspect of the video in other words, you can focus solely on what will actually end up on screen. This also allows you to produce several takes of the video without worrying about correctly re reading the script each time you re record a section of the video. Video, like audio, can be produced with anything from high end video hardware to the camera on an average smart phone. The video editing software of the CBM can usually import any video type you will be able to produce. Does your storyboard require some animation components? These can be produced using animation software programs such as Adobe Flash, After Effects, or even Microsoft PowerPoint. Again, if producing the actual animation is proving too tricky, the CBM can help that is what we are here for! If you have a clear storyboard and a well recorded script, creating the actual animation with the CBM will not be as difficult as starting from a blank slate. If working directly with or at the CBM, you will need to collect and bring all your materials. Bring all the graphics, photos, animations, audio, and video that you want to include in your final edited video or animation to the CBM. This collection of files can become very large (especially the video and audio files), so expect to bring a CD, DVD, or storage device as opposed to e mailing files as attachments. We can review the project, examine the files, create animations, and assemble the final video with the software and hardware at the CBM using your storyboard as the outline. STEP 5 Final Editing While it is difficult (and often timely) to make major changes at this point, final editing allows you to review the overall piece of media and make any last minute minor changes. Once finalized, the media can be exported and either copied to a DVD or placed online to watch as a web based video.
