LEARNING TO DRIVE IN THE U.S. Minimum age: (1) STAGE 1: LEARNER S PERMIT Tests: (2) (3) Learning to drive on the Alaskan Highway Jane Leclerc is seventeen years old. She has been driving for a year now. She drives a delivery truck on the Alaskan Highway all the way to Canada! The Alaskan Highway is 2,224, km long it stretches from Fairbanks, Alaska, in the U.S. to Dawson Creek in Canada. Jane s father used to drive the delivery truck, but he had an accident last year. So his only child, Jane had to learn to drive quickly. You have to be sixteen years old to drive in Alaska and the driving test isn t easy, says Jane. To get a learner s permit in the U.S., a person must pass an eye exam and a written test. The person applying for a driver s license must practice driving a lot. After six months of safe driving, the person takes an Advanced Drivers Training Course and a road test. If the person passes, he or she gets a provisional license. He or she will be allowed to drive with the provisional license but only during the day, not at night. After a year of driving without any accident or driving ticket, the person can apply for a full license. It takes Jane about fourteen days to drive across the Alaskan Highway. Once she gets to her destination, she rests for two days, then she starts the drive home. In the summer, she drives longer hours because there could be sunlight for 24 hours a day, especially in June. The Highway can be a dangerous road. In the winter, it gets very cold and the roads are icy. In icy situations, the highway is closed. STAGE 2: PROVISIONAL LICENSE After (4) safe driving. Course: (5) Test: (6) Condition: Can only drive (7) STAGE 3: FULL LICENSE Given after (8) of safe driving. 3 Are these sentences true or false? Check (3) the correct box. 1. The Alaskan Highway is never closed. 4 Correct the false sentences from Exercise 2. 5 Project True False Find out how to get a driver s license in your country.
