5 Sun Streaming System Release Notes This document provides information about critical issues with the Sun Streaming System, Release Please read this document before operating your system. It includes the following sections: Introduction on page 1 New Features on page 1 Major Fixes on page 8 Known Issues and Workarounds on page 9 System Requirements on page 9 Instructions for Upgrading the System on page 10 Technical Support and Feedback on page 12 Introduction The Sun Streaming Software Release 1.10 document contains information on new features, fixed problems, runtime problem details, and installation notes. This Release Document supplements the information contained in the Sun Streaming System User Guide. New Features The Streaming System includes the following new features: 1

6 Secure Login For increased security, system administrators must now login to a Sun Streaming System through a secure connection using the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol. Access to the administrative console using Telnet is no longer supported. The sequence of commands below provides an example of a login session where a user attempts to login from a host called isolator01, using the default user (admin) and the default password (admin). Refer to Section in the Sun Streaming System User Guide for information on adding and deleting users and managing their passwords. [bob@isolator01 ~]$ ssh admin@msom01 Password: ***** Last login: Wed Dec 19 11:43: from isolator sun> Export Processor The export processor is a new node in a Sun Streaming System. It allows an edge caching device to retrieve content from a Sun Streaming System using FTP. The two systems are complementary. The division of responsibility between the Sun Streaming System and the edge caching devices works as described below. The Sun Streaming System is used to import and store all titles that subscribers can view. The storage capacity of a Sun Streaming System is very large and it will contain thousands or tens of thousands of titles. In comparison, the storage capacity of an edge caching device is small and it will contain a much smaller number of popular titles. The total number of titles will typically be under one hundred. All RTSP setup requests from a client are initially sent to an edge caching device. If the edge caching device has the title, it will stream it to the client. Otherwise, the client will get an RTSP response redirecting it to a Sun Streaming System. This interaction is transparent to subscribers. Node Configuration The export processor node can be provisioned on a dedicated machine or on a machine that is also running another node. Refer to Section 4.2 in the Sun Streaming System User Guide for information on how to create and delete nodes. The following steps must be followed to create a new export processor: 1. 7 2. Create an export processor node. 3. Start the export processor. 4. Verify that the export processor is running. For example: sun> enable sun# config sun(config)# exportprocessor 0 machinename mworks08 sun(config)# exportprocessor 0 command start The default FTP connection parameters are: username=kealia password=kealia port=20021 If the edge caching device does not allow for port setting, then the machine that the export processor runs on must forward requests from port 21 to port This can be achieved via iptables. In this example, an export processor is runnning on mworks08, which has an IP address of The edge caching device connects to mworks08 via bond1. Example [root@mworks08 root]# iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i bond1 -p tcp --dport 21 -j DNAT --to :20021 Import Timestamps The system now provides a timestamp which shows the time when an import started and when it finished. The timestamps are made available via the operator (CLI and Web) and programatic (XML/HTTP) interfaces. 8 Current Streams: 0 Total Streams: 0 Num Copies: 1 Copies: 1 Bad Copies: Common Primary and Backup Supervisor IP Address In a system with dual supervisor nodes, one node is active and the other one is on standby. An administrator can now assign the same IP address to the management (external) interface of both nodes. This allows an administrator to always log into the active supervisor node. To define a common IP address, use the following command: sun(config)# machine Supervisor 1 interface externalip IP Address netmask IP Address gateway MAC Address This command should only be invoked once on the Supervisor 1 machine. Both the active and standby supervisor nodes will obtain the necessary networking information provided via this command. IpNetwork Enhancements In a Sun Streaming System, an IP network object refers to range of downstream IP addresses that will receive video traffic from one or more 10 GE ports on a Sun Fire X4950 streaming switch. Hence, when configuring an IP network object, an operator is configuring routes that define how downstream devices should be reached via the switch fabric. The following enhancements have been made in the current release: 1. An operator can now assign a text name to an IP network object in addition to the numerical index. This makes it easier to identify a route in large scale systems. 2. The number of IP networks has increased from 32 to To configure an IP network object, an operator must define the network and network mask as well as the MAC address of the downstream gateway. The operator must assign the IP network object to one or more 10 GE ports on a Sun Fire X4950. 9 but different gateway MAC addresses. This allow an operator to transmit traffic for a single route using multiple 10 GE ports and to use more than a single gateway interface downstream. Several enhancements were made in this area to ensure that the replication occurs as fast as possible while ensuring that it does not interfere with the scheduling of video streams. The titlereplicate command is used to make additional copies of a title. This command is described in Section 5.3 of the Sun Streaming System User Guide. The enhancements to post-import replication are internal to the system. The titlereplicate command has the same syntax and behavior as before. Node Status and Configuration Enhancements The term node refers to one of the software applications that are part of the Sun Streaming System. The software applications run on a variety of hardware platforms including the Sun Fire X4100(Note 1), X4500, and X4950. The Sun Streaming System Sun Streaming System Release Notes 5

10 allows a system administrator to provision nodes in an active or standby configuration. When nodes are active, they can be in a started, stopped, failed, or degraded state. In addition, nodes have transient states while they transition from one state to another. Enhancements have been made in this area to allow a system administrator to see the status of these nodes via the administrative console (CLI or web). In addition, a greater number of system checks are done during node startup to validate that all channels between nodes are functional and active. No configuration is necessary to enable this feature and no new commands are required. The additional states will be listed when the show nodes command is invoked. Node is running but administratively disabled. Self-monitoring reported a process fault. The syntax for starting and stopping nodes has been simplified. 11 Note The syntax for starting and stopping nodes used in previous releases is no longer supported. The syntax described below will no longer work as of Release : Discontinued format: sun(config)# node nodeid prov provadmin action For example: sun(config)# importprocessor 0 prov provadmin start Sun Fire X4950 Link Status The status of the all 32 ports on a Sun Fire X4950 switch can be now be viewed using the administrative interface. This command displays whether a 10GigE port has an XFP transceiver module. If an XFP transceiver module is present, the link status is provided. If the link status is OK, the system also provides the index of the Media Stor that is connected to that 10 GigE port. An example is provided below. Example: sun> show streamingservice 0 port status Node Id Port Id Input Link Media Stor LinkOK LinkOK NotPresent NotPresent NotPresent NotPresent NotPresent NotPresent (ports 8-31 are not shown) Configuring the System Timezone The Sun Streaming System now provides a command to set the time zone based on geographical regions. To set the time zone, use the following procedure: 1. Logon to the CLI with config privileges. Sun Streaming System Release Notes 7

12 2. Enter the command streamingsystem timezone timezonestring directory/file, where directory/file is a directory and filename from /usr/share/zoneinfo. The directory /usr/share/zoneinfo contains directories named after regions. The directories contain files named after places in the corresponding region. For example: /usr/share/zoneinfo/us/eastern /usr/share/zoneinfo/australia/perth To set the time zone to the eastern United States, enter the command: sun(config)# streamingsystem timezone timezonestring US/Eastern Major Fixes The following table lists the major bugs that were fixed in Release Bug Description 9443 A defective 10GigE NIC in a X4500 storage array requires that the NIC be replaced. The link remains invalid even after the media store is restarted with a working 10GigE NIC XFP not detected by Streaming Service node at system startup When a stream terminates and an entry is created in the stream history table, the start time is the same as the stop time No operator message when maximum bit rate is exceeded Inadequate error reporting when machine index is out of range Media store segmentation fault with unusable bank Missing ip network routes during supervisor failure Time out occurs before channel communication is established between software nodes Attribute mismatch when recovering replication content Failure occurs while importing live content Upgrade does not preserve bond1 interface configuration on supervisor node 8 Sun Streaming System Release Notes April 2008

13 Known Issues and Workarounds Bug Description Workaround 7003 Cannot remove directory on X4500 storage array 7727 The CLI hangs after running the command sun(config)# validate 9539 Link failure on a supervisor (SOM) node will result in a log entry in the syslog file under /var/log/messages but not the operator log under /local/e2elog/operator.log file Import processor does not restrict the import of variable bit rate content The file system repair utility (xfs_repair) must be executed to fix this problem. This fix should only be attempted by a trained system administrator or a qualified Sun service representative. The CLI session must be terminated and the system must be validated by examining the machine and node states and configuration settings. The link status of the SOM should be monitored from an external network manager. The polling interval should be frequent and the time between retries should be small. The syslog file will have an entry if a link fails. The title must be deleted using the titledelete command. The bug fix will include additional operator logging information to identify when an MPEG file does not meet the profile of CBR content.. System Requirements The following minimum system requirements are recommended for running the release: The supervisor, import procesor, content controller, and session controller nodes must run on Sun Fire X4100 servers. Each server must have 2 CPUs and 4GB of RAM. The server running the supervisor must be equipped with two 73GB hard disk drives. Sun Streaming System Release Notes 9

14 To install the software from DVD, two options are available. Either a local CDROM/DVD drive can be used or a remote CDROM/DVD drive can be mounted using the service processor. Refer to the corresponding Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) Administration Guide in the Sun Fire X4100 documentation collection for more information. Note The Sun Fire X4100 server includes both the Sun Fire X4100, and the Sun Fire X4100-M2 versions. The media store node must run on an Sun Fire X4500 storage array with 48 hard disk drives. The storage array must have 2 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 10GigE NIC. The streaming service node must run on an Sun Fire X4950 switch with one controller card, one linecard, and one optical card. Please consult the Sun Streaming System User Guide for information on interconnection requirements between nodes. Instructions for Upgrading the System Note The build shown in the examples in this section is , build number 3. The upgrade you are performing might use a later build. 1. Log into the Sun Streaming System operator CLI. 2. Enter the following commands: sun> enable sun# config sun(config)# streamingsystem commit Note - This might return an error message if the previous version is already committed. Execute this command anyways to make sure.) sun(config)# savecfg sun(config)# streamingsystem upgrade imagelocation /mnt/cdrom/sunstreamingsystem iso Upgrading Sun Streaming Software will cause an interruption of service forabout 15 minutes. Do you wish to continue? (y or n): y 3. Wait for approximately 15 minutes for the new files to be written to disk and for the msom01 machine to be restarted. 4. 15 Note This is the Unix BASH shell on the X4100 server running the SOM (supervisor)]. 5. Stop the supervisor by executing the following instruction: root]# service supervisor stop 6. Reboot all the nodes other than the supervisor to ensure they get the latest OS image: root]# rsh mworks01 reboot root]# rsh mworks08 reboot root]# rsh mworks09 reboot root]# rsh mstor01 reboot root]# rsh mswitch01 reboot 7. Wait approximately 5 minutes for these nodes to finish booting. 8. Restart the supervisor: [root@msom01 root]# service supervisor start 9. Log into the Sun Streaming System operator CLI. 10.
