DNS Naming for Windows DECUS Symposium in Bonn 2002 Thomas Strasser Technical Consultant einfrastruktur Einführung Was ist DNS? Warum benötigt Active Directory DNS? 1
DNS Basic Overview Global naming service used by the Internet Defacto naming standard used today Features Hierarchical Distributed Partitioned Replicated 2
DNS Components Zone delegation DNS Namespace Root com. compaq.com. 3
DNS Services Root com. compaq.com Client DNS Resource Records (RRs) Address (A) Name-to-address Pointer (PTR) Address-to-name not needed for AD Server (SRV) Service similar to Mail Exchange (MX) AD test1.nt5.compaq.com 4
DNS Delegation com IN NS ns1.com. ns1.com IN A Root compaq IN NS ns1.compaq.com. ns1.compaq.com IN A compaq.com. DNS Zone Transfer compaq IN SOA ns1.compaq.com, Root ns2 ns1 compaq.com. 5
Dynamic DNS Additional functionality for DNS Replaces WINS Allows dynamic changes to DNS resource records (RR) Dynamic DNS Updates Using UPDATE request Enables immediate changes to zone records Eliminates manual zone file changes 6
Incremental Zone Transfers Secondary DNS server IXFR Notify Primary DNS server Update zone file Update NT.compaq.com A DNS client Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Integration DHCP server Update PTR NT.compaq.com DNS server Update zone file Request IP address Response Update NT.compaq.com A DNS client 7
How the AD Uses DNS LDAP://cn=f smith,ou=sales,ou=mro,dc=sno,dc=nt,dc=compaq,dc=com com compaq.com sno.nt.compaq.com nt.compaq.com AD domain AD Concepts and DNS DNS Namespace Parent Child Tree Domain Organizational Unit Forest 8
AD Information Stored in DNS A records for domain controller (DC): qtest.cpqcorp.net IN A SRV records for locating AD: _ldap._tcp.nt.compaq.com IN SRV 005dc-1.nt.compaq.com _ldap._tcp.seattle.sites._msdcs.nt.compaq.com IN SRV dc-2.nt.compaq.com _ldap._tcp.gc._msdcs.nt.compaq.com IN SRV dc-1.nt.compaq.com AD DNS Requirements Supports Request for Comments (RFCs) Must support SRV records (RFC 2052) Should support dynamic update (RFC 2136) Should support incremental zone transfers (RFC 1995) 9
Planning DNS for AD Servers Naming WINS Microsoft DNS Server AD integration Multi-master replication Secure dynamic updates (with AD) WINS integration Unicode support be careful 10
DNS Server on Non-Microsoft Platform BIND 8.2 on UNIX released March 1999 SRV, dynamic updates and IXFR Existing infrastructure Could delegate Naming a Root Domain Meaningful Available Registered 11
DNS, Trees, and Forests Parent Child Domain WINS and DNS WINS is needed for legacy systems DNS can be configured to look up WINS, as in NT4.0 NetBIOS names and WINS can be removed after all systems are running Windows 2000 DNS Searchlist? 12
Beispiel Design DNS/AD Company ABC private.abc.com AD domain ad.private.abc.com AD domain Background Company ABC Pre-existing DNS BIND8.2.1onVMS Using private.abc.com Politics Windows support staff do not want to use BIND Network support staff do not trust Windows support staff to manage DNS All parties want to use private.abc.com for Windows

Background Company XYZ Pre-existing DNS BIND 8.2 on UNIX Do not want to Windows 2000 to impact production DNS environment No requirement to use existing DNS names Beispiel Design DNS Company XYZ xyz.com Existing implementation BIND 8.2 admin.xyz.com emea.xyz.com AD integratetd into admin.xyz.com on W2K AD integratetd into emea.xyz.com on W2K 15
Tipps Each AD Domain it s own DNS zone When using secure zones don t run DHCP on DC s Configure DHCP Server to remove A record when lease expires If using DHCP servers with secure dynamic updates, configure DHCP servers to be member of DNSUpdateProxy group reboot DHCP Server! Tipps cont. W2K registers GC and GUID RR in the forest root DNS zone _ldap._tcp.gc._msdcs.dnsforestname. _ldap._tcp.sitename._sites.gc._msdcs.dnsforestname. _ldap._tcp.domainguid.domains._msdcs.dnsforestname. These records needed for client logon and AD replication Configure non root domain DNS servers as secondary for _msdcs zone Bug s!! Watch out DNS caching resolver (ipconfig/flushdns) Watch out Registration of the DNS domainname A record (ping domainname) 16
.NET Application Directory Partitions Application Directory Partitions Provides the ability to create new naming contexts within the directory The DCs that host the replicas of the NC can be controlled Cross-domain replication is supported With the exception of security principals any type of object/attribute can be supported 17
