Overview Introduction The Winterm Terminal Connectivity Guide explains how to configure your terminal for communication with multi-user Windows NT (Windows New Technology) applications server, via TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol) and PPP (Point to Point Protocol). This guide assumes that user login accounts have been established on an applications server, and with a remote access provider, if applicable. Your terminal provides the following support: 10Base-T TCP/IP connectivity, with any multi-user Windows NT applications server TCP/IP PPP, through serial connectivity, with any multi-user Windows NT application server DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) DNS (Domain Name Services) Local host tables Other connectivity options such as Token Ring

iv Overview About This Connectivity Guide This connectivity guide provides information in two chapters: The TCP/IP Connection and The PPP Connection. A troubleshooting guide for each chapter is also provided. The TCP/IP Connection The TCP/IP Connection is divided into two main sections: Creating a Server Connection Creating a TCP/IP Connection Creating a Server Connection explains how to create a TCP/IP connection definition that will connect the terminal to an applications server. That connection includes the connection s user name, domain, and password. Creating a TCP/IP Connection explains how to configure the terminal s network information. Topics include identifying the terminal s IP address, network gateway, subnet mask, and DNS server. Note More than one type of terminal device can be set up for communication through TCP/IP, depending on what network options are installed on your terminal. For example, both the 10Base-T and Token Ring topologies can use TCP/IP for communication. The PPP Connection The PPP Connection is divided into four main sections: Creating a PPP Connection Configuring a PPP Connection Configuring Security Network Hosts Table Creating a PPP Connection explains how to create a PPP connection definition that will connect the terminal to an applications server, and how to identify the connection s user name, domain, and password. Configuring a PPP Connection explains how to configure the terminal s PPP options. It also explains how to configure DNS, and select the applications server. Configuring Security explains how to provide the authentication information required by an applications server, including how to create a login script, and how to identify the user name and password. Network Hosts Table explains how to access the terminal s local host table. It also explains how to locally define a remote IP (Internet Protocol) address with its respective host name.

Overview v Note Refer to the user s guide for additional information about configuring the terminal. Network Definitions The following definitions provide an overall look at the types of network connections that can be made by your terminal. The Intranet Connection A PPP intranet (within a corporation) connection connects the terminal to a host or terminal server. The connection is accomplished by either a direct serial, or modem connection. That host might be connected to any other host within the network. The Internet Connection In an internet connection scheme, the terminal is connected to an ISP (Internet Service Provider), through PPP. After the ISP connection is established, the provider can route the connection to any applications server within the internet. With this connection, users can connect to any applications server worldwide.

To facilitate script entry, special script controls can be entered into the string: <cr> is replaced with a carriage return character <lf> is replaced with a line feed character <ddd> is replaced with an ASCII character that is equal to the decimal value of ddd <un> is replaced with the content of the Security dialog box Username field <pw> is replaced with the content of the Security dialog box Password field To create a script, first determine the login sequence used by your host or server. This can be done by asking your administrator for a description of the login sequence. Or you can use Terminal Login, going through the Terminal Login process once to learn the server s login sequence. Note The maximum number of lines per script is 8. To enter a special script control such as <cr>, enter <, c, r, >. Do not use spaces between characters. Lines are added to a script by: 1 Selecting <snd> or <exp>. 2 Clicking in the String field. 3 Entering the appropriate string. 4 Clicking on Add to add the string to the script. 5 Repeating steps 1 through 4 for each <snd> or <exp> string definition. Note Each script dialog is unique to one connection. Click on the OK command button when the script is completed. The Security dialog box will close, and the script will be saved. You will then see the PPP Configuration dialog box (see Figure 2-2).

The PPP Connection 2-15 Table 2-4 describes a sample script. Table 2-4 String <snd><cr> <exp>login: Sample Script Definition Send a carriage return. Expect Login:. <snd><un><cr> <exp>password: <snd><pw><cr> Send the contents of the Username field, followed by a carriage return character. Expect Password:. Send the contents of the Password field, followed by a carriage return character.

2-16 Chapter 2 Network Hosts Table The Network Hosts Table dialog box (Figure 2-4) is used to associate and resolve IP addresses with applications server names, and save them to the terminal s local host table. Click on this command button to exit and return to the Networks dialog box without accepting your modifications.

A 10Base-T Connector Pin Assignments Figure A-1 shows the pin assignments for the terminal 10Base-T connector. It is recommended that you use Category 5 twisted-pair cable to connect your terminal to a hub. Figure A-1 10Base-T Pin Assignments

B Troubleshooting TCP/IP This troubleshooting guide provides solutions to problems that may occur when making a terminal TCP/IP network connection to a Windows NT applications server. If you cannot resolve an issue, call an authorized service center for assistance. Problem When the terminal is turned on, the Network command button does not appear in the Connections dialog box. When attempting a network connection to a Windows NT applications server, the screen goes blank. The screen of the terminal either freezes, or displays the error message: Error 1034 (0x40a) - I/O Error. When attempting a network connection to a Windows NT applications server, the terminal displays the error message: TCP/IP Error 14 (0xe) - Host unknown. Solution 1 Ensure that the terminal network card is properly installed on the terminal s logic board, at connector J5. 2 Ensure that the logic board is properly installed in the terminal. See Creating a TCP/IP Connection for details about creating a network connection definition. Although you have connected the network cable to the 10Base-T (RJ45) port, the terminal s configuration may still be set up for a serial connection. 1 Ensure that the correct Windows NT server s IP address or host name is entered in the Server Name field in the Connection Properties dialog box. 2 If DNS is disabled, ensure that the applications server s host name and IP address reside in the terminal s host table in the Network Hosts Table dialog box. 3 If DNS is enabled, ensure that the DNS server is available, and the correct Domain Name and Primary and Secondary Server IP addresses are entered in the appropriate fields in the Networks dialog box. 4 Ensure that the DNS servers are up and running, and that your Windows NT applications server s host name and IP address are listed in the DNS server s host table.

B-2 Appendix B Problem When attempting a network connection to a Windows NT applications server, the terminal displays the error message: TCP/IP Error 10 (0xa) - Host unreachable. While making a network connection with a Windows NT applications server, the terminal displays the error message: TCP/IP Error 13 (0xd) - Time-out. before the connection is completed. When attempting a network connection to a Windows NT applications server, the terminal displays the error message: TCP/IP Error 20 (0x14). Connection reset. Solution 1 Ensure that the applications server is functioning properly. 2 Ensure that the hardware and cabling between the terminal and the Windows NT applications server is properly connected. 3 Ensure that the correct Windows NT applications server s IP address is entered in the Server Name field in the Connection Properties dialog box. If the host name is used in the Server Name field, then the IP address associated with that host name might be incorrect. 4 If DNS is disabled, ensure that the correct IP address is associated with the applications server s host name in the hosts table in the Network Hosts Table dialog box. 5 If DNS is enabled, ensure that the correct IP address is associated with the applications server s host name in the DNS server s host table. 1 Ensure that the Windows NT applications server is functioning properly. 2 Ensure that the hardware and cabling between the terminal and the applications server is connected and functioning properly. 3 Ensure that the correct Windows NT application server s IP address is entered in the Server Name field in the Connection Properties dialog box. 4 If DHCP is disabled, ensure that a valid IP address is entered in the IP Address field in the Networks dialog box. 5 If DHCP is enabled, ensure that the DHCP server is properly configured and running. 6 If the problem persists, there may be excessive traffic on the network. Ask your network administrator to verify that this is not the case. This may indicate that the applications server is booting up and not able to complete a connection. Wait for the server to boot up, then try the connection again.

Troubleshooting TCP/IP B-3 Problem When attempting a network connection to a Windows NT application server, the terminal displays the error message: Solution This may indicate that the network card is not functioning properly. Ensure that the network cable is connected to the terminal s 10Base-T connector. Network failure - Hardware or cable problem. When the terminal is connected to a Windows NT applications server, the terminal displays the error message: TCP/IP Error 20 (0x14) - Connection reset. When the terminal is connected to a Windows NT applications server, the terminal s screen freezes, but the mouse is still active. This may indicate that the Windows NT applications server was turned off, then on, without performing a clean system shutdown (due to a power outage or an unintentional turn-off). This also may indicate that the connection between the terminal and the Windows NT applications server has been temporarily disconnected while the terminal was disconnected or reset from the server s administration utility. 1 Ensure that the server is functioning properly, and connected to a stable power source. 2 Ensure that the hardware and cabling between the terminal and application server is properly connected. Then log back on to the server to continue your session. This may indicate that the connection between the terminal and the Windows NT applications server has been disconnected, or that the server is down. 1 Ensure that the applications server is functioning properly. 2 Ensure that all hardware and cabling between the terminal and server is properly connected. Then log back on to the server to continue your session. Note If you receive error messages not covered in this guide, try defaulting the terminal to its factory defaults. This is done by turning the terminal off then on, while holding down the G key until the Connections dialog box appears.

C Troubleshooting PPP This troubleshooting guide provides solutions to problems that may occur when making a terminal PPP network connection to a Windows NT applications server. If you cannot resolve an issue, call an authorized service center for assistance. Problem When trying to make a connection with a serial port configured for PPP, the terminal screen goes white. Vertical lines, starting at the left hand corner of the screen appear. The terminal screen either freezes, or when the Enter key is pressed, more vertical lines appear. While trying to connect to a server using a PPP-configured terminal, an Error Message dialog box displays: Network failure - PPP negotiations fail. Solution Ensure that the terminal is not configured for a standard asynchronous serial connection. If it is, verify that the terminal has the appropriate hardware for network connectivity. Then refer to the connectivity guide about how to configure a PPP connection. 1 Ensure that all the hardware and cabling between the terminal and the terminal server is connected and functioning properly. 2 Ensure that the terminal server is not configured for a standard asynchronous serial port. If it is, refer to the terminal server s user s guide for instructions on how to configure the terminal server s port for PPP connectivity. 3 If your terminal server is configured for CHAP/PAP, make sure you have enabled the CHAP/PAP option in the Security dialog box on your terminal, supplying the correct username and password. If the terminal server is configured to supply the IP address to a PPP client dynamically, make sure the terminal is configured to learn the IP address from the server. Otherwise, make sure you supply the terminal with the correct IP address for both the local and the remote ends.
