Connecting to a RadioRA System via a Local Area Network Overview APPLICATION NOTE # 127 Home networks have become increasingly popular, often times providing connection to a Local Area Netwok (LAN) from any room throughout the home. A LAN provides a convenient connection point, allowing a PC to communicate to any device that resides on the network. This Application Note covers how to place a RadioRA system on a Local Area Network, allowing convenient real-time operation of the system from any network connection point. The LAN solution provided involves using a low-cost Ethernet-to-RS-232 converter and Telnet to test the connection. After testing the connection, other devices may be connected to the LAN to communicate with the RadioRA system. Equipment Requirements Quantity Equipment 1 RadioRA Serial Device (either a ChronosTM System Bridge and Timeclock, or an RS-232 Interface) 1 IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98, 2000 or XP, and one Network Interface Card (NIC) with TCP/IP communication protocol enabled 1 Local Area Network (LAN) using TCP/IP communication protocol with two unused live Ethernet connections (wall jacks, hubs, etc) 1 Digi Digi One SP Device Server with power supply and Software & Documentation CD; available at 1 DB9F to DB9M Serial Cable (the same cable used to connect a PC to a RadioRA Serial Device) 2 Ethernet patch cables NOTE: The Digi One SP Device Server has been chosen for this based on its ease of configuration and use. Other manufacturers device servers may also be used. 1

RadioRA #127: Digi One SP Device Server Setup 1. After making sure that the device server came with both the power supply and the installation CD, start the setup process by setting/checking the DIP switches on the back of the device server. DIP switch one should be up, and all others should be down, as shown on the picture to the right. This should be the factory default setting. 2. Connect the power supply to the device server. All LEDs will initially turn on and then back off as part of the power up sequence. After approximately 12 seconds, the power LED will flash four times and then turn off. After approximately 23 seconds, the power LED will begin to continuously flash once a second. The flashing power LED indicates that the power up sequence is complete and that the device server's IP Address has not been assigned. 3. Connect one end of the first Ethernet patch cable to the RJ-45 connector on the device server and the other end to the first live Ethernet connection. The Link LED should turn on and remain on and the Activity (Act) LED should flash when link activity is sensed. The flash rate will vary based on the type of LAN and the number of devices connected (anything from once every half second to once every three seconds). Depending on the type of LAN, the power LED may stop blinking once the Ethernet patch cable is connected, indicating that an IP Address has been automatically assigned. 4. The last connection to make is the serial cable connecting the RS-232 Link on the RadioRA Serial Device to the serial port on the device server. Verify steps 2-4 using the wiring diagram below. 5 RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 5. In order to determine the IP Address of the PC that will be used to configure the device server, the command prompt screen is needed. Connect the NIC to the second live Ethernet connection with the second Ethernet patch cable. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of this Application Note for instructions on opening the command prompt screen. In the command prompt screen, type ipconfig and press the Enter key. The IP Address of the Ethernet adapter shown below is Write down the IP Address of the PC that will be used to configure the device server, for future reference. If the IP Address of the Ethernet adapter is or the Subnet Mask does not have 0 as its last digit, this needs to be corrected. Refer to Setting the PC s IP Address in the Troubleshooting section of this for more information. 6. Insert the Digi Software & Documentation CD into the CD drive of the PC with the NIC. If the CD does not start automatically, double-click My Computer > CD-ROM Drive. Once the Digi splash screen appears, the Digi Device Setup Wizard should start automatically. If it does not, click the setup icon on the splash screen, as shown below. 5

RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 7. The Digi Device Setup Wizard requires the MAC address of the device server. The MAC address is located on the white label on the bottom or back of the device. In the device server label shown below, the MAC address is labeled MA: 00409D2305D9. Locate the MAC address of the device server before continuing. 8. The first step of the Setup Wizard is to locate the device server to be set up. The picture below shows an unconfigured device server selected in the list of Found Devices. Note the MAC address is the same as listed on the label above. Select the device server and press the Next button. If a device server does not appear in the list of Found Devices, press the Refresh button. If it still does not appear, verify the Ethernet patch cable is still connected to the device server, the Link LED is on solid and the Act LED is flashing occasionally. 6

RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 9. The next step is to assign an IP Address and a Subnet Mask to the device server, as shown below. The IP Address of the device server needs to be on the same network segment as the PC used to configure the device server. The network segment is the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address. Therefore, the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address of the device server should be exactly the same as the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address of the PC. In the IP Address field of the Digi Device Setup Wizard, type the first three groups of numbers in the IP Address of the PC obtained in step The fourth group of numbers in the IP Address needs to be unique for all devices on the network segment. The fourth group of numbers in the IP Address must be different than the IP Address of the PC, written down in step 5. Choose a number between 1 and 254 that is not being used by any other device and type it into the last portion of the IP Address field. To determine if any other network device is currently using an IP Address, execute steps 1-3 of The Ping Test detailed in the Troubleshooting section of this. If The Ping Test fails, there is no device on the network segment using that IP Address, and it can be used for the device server. Once an IP Address is chosen for the device server, write it down for future reference (for testing and diagnostics). 11. After typing in the IP Address, the Subnet Mask should be filled in automatically by the Setup Wizard. If it is not filled in, type for the Subnet Mask. Typically, only the IP Address and Subnet Mask are required for most LANs. Consult a local expert if any other IP settings are required. After entering an IP Address and Subnet Mask, press the Next button. 7

RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 12. The Setup Wizard needs to know how the device server is going to be used. For this application, choose the Incoming Network Connection scenario and press the Next button, as shown below. 13. After selecting the Incoming Network Connection option, the wizard needs to know what type of socket connection will be used. Since the LAN devices will be both sending and receiving data, the Incoming TCP Connection scenario should be selected and the Next button pressed, as displayed below. 14. The last option in the Setup Wizard is to configure the serial port. The serial port should be set up the same way as the RadioRA Serial Device. Use the settings listed below and press the Next button. 8

RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 15. The final step of the Digi Device Setup Wizard is to verify all of the information that was entered to this point. Double-check all of the information entered, and note that some values (Default Gateway and DNS Server) have been filled in. If something is not correct, press the Back button until the screen containing the information is displayed and then correct it. If all the information is correct, press the Next button. 16. The Setup Wizard will send all of the configuration information to the device server and display a status bar indicating the current progress. Once the wizard has sent all of the required information, the final screen displays that the device server configuration was saved successfully. It also explains how to change any of the configuration information using the web interface. The last screen also allows the Digi One SP to be registered on the Digi web site. Digi highly recommends that the device server be registered for proper technical support. Press the Finish button to end the Digi Device Setup Wizard. The device server is now ready for use with LAN devices. Use the IP address written down in step 9 and Port 2101 to communicate with the RadioRA system. The setup can be verified by following the steps in the Troubleshooting section of this. 9

RadioRA #127: Device Server Setup - Continued 17. If the Setup Wizard was not able to configure the device server properly, the following screen will be displayed. 18. Press the View Report button to view the Error Report, as shown below. As the highlighted line indicates, the Setup Wizard was unable to properly save the configuration settings because Waiting for device FAILED!. In this case, the error is due to the PC and the device server not being located on the same network segment or due to both devices having the same IP Address. Reset power to the device server, return to step 5 and repeat all steps, making sure to write down the IP Address of the PC's Ethernet adapter for use in step 9 and 10. If other errors are found in the Error Report, consult the Digi Software & Documentation CD for more information. 10

RadioRA #127: Troubleshooting If a connection cannot be made to the Digi One SP Device Server from the LAN device, there are two tests that can help in determining where the source of the problem lies. Both tests are run using the command prompt (also called the MS-DOS Prompt). Open the Command Prompt Screen 1. For Windows 98, press the Start button on the taskbar and select Programs > MS-DOS Prompt. 2. For Windows 2000, press the Start button on the taskbar and select Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. 3. For Windows XP, press the Start button on the taskbar and select All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. The Ping Test The ping test can be used to determine the source of connection problems to network devices. The ping test can determine if an IP Address of a device on the LAN is valid. It can also determine if a network device is on the same segment, depending upon the configuration of the LAN router. 1. Open the command prompt screen. Refer to Open the Command Prompt Screen above. 2. In the command prompt screen, type ping, a space, the IP Address of a network device, and then press the Enter key. The ping command sends 32 bytes of data, four separate times. The picture below shows what happens when the test passes. Note that all four requests resulted in replies from the network device at IP Address In the statistics section, note the percentage of lost packets is 0%. 11

RadioRA #127: Troubleshooting - Continued 3. The picture below shows what happens when the test fails. Note that all four requests timed out and there was 100% loss in the statistics section. 4. If the test fails, check the Ethernet cable connections at the PC sending the command and at the network device. Also, check the power supply connection to the network device. The Telnet Test The ping test can be used for any network device that has an IP Address. The telnet test can only be run on a network device that has a serial port, like the Digi One SP Device Server. If the ping test failed, then the telnet test will fail as well. The telnet test is used to verify a network connection to a device with a serial port. It is also used to verify the connection of the serial port on the device to another serial port. 1. Open the command prompt screen. Refer to Open the Command Prompt Screen above. 2. In the command prompt screen, type telnet, a space, the IP Address of the device server, another space, the port number of the serial port on the device server and press the Enter key. The IP Address of the device server was assigned in step 9 of the Digi One SP Device Server Setup of this. Port 2101 is the default port number for the serial port of the device server. The picture below shows the first step in attempting to connect to a device server with IP Address , port number

RadioRA #127: Troubleshooting - Continued The Telnet Test - Continued 3. After pressing the Enter key, the command prompt opens the telnet client. 4. Press the Enter key a few times, causing the RadioRA Serial Device to reply with the! prompt, which is displayed by the telnet client. The picture below shows what happens when the telnet test passes using Windows XP. 5. The! prompt indicates that a connection has been made to the RadioRA Serial Device through the device server. To finish the telnet test, click the button with an X (close button) in the upper right of the command prompt to close the telnet client and the command prompt screen. 6. If Windows 2000 or Windows 98 is being used, the! prompt will only show up on the first line. When typing in a command, such as "LMPI", the typed in text will not show up on the screen. Additionally, after pressing Enter, the RadioRA Serial Device to reply with the LMP command followed by fifteen 1's and 0's followed by the! prompt. Notice that the prompt appears to overlap with the LMP command when in fact two separate lines were sent from the RadioRA Serial Device. This behavior is a limitation of the telnet client and not a point of concern. 7. If the incorrect IP Address or port number is typed into the command prompt window, the telnet test will fail. The picture below shows a failed telnet test. To correct the IP Address, refer to the Digi One SP Device Server Setup section of this. 13

RadioRA #127: Troubleshooting - Continued The Telnet Test - Continued 8. If the serial port settings on the device server are not the same as those on the RadioRA RS-232 port, non-printable characters will be displayed in the telnet client, as shown below. To correct the port settings, refer to the Digi One SP Device Server Setup section of this. Setting the PC's IP Address If the IP Address of the PC running the Digi One SP Setup Software is not set, the Digi One SP can not be configured properly. In addition, if the Subnet Mask does not have 0 as its last digit group (i.e ), the Digi One SP can not be configured properly. An incorrect IP Address or Subnet Mask has a greater chance of occurring when using Windows 98 then Windows 2000 or Windows XP, so the focus of this section will be Windows 98. To correct the IP Address and/or Subnet Mask, the following procedure can be used. 1. Press the Start button on the taskbar and select Settings > Control Panel. 2. On the Control Panel screen, double-click the Network icon. 3. In the list of installed network components on the Network screen, select the item that has both TCP/IP and EtherLink (or Ethernet) adapter in the name of the component, as shown below. Press the Properties button to modify the IP Address and Subnet Mask. 14

RadioRA #127: Troubleshooting - Continued 4. On the IP Address tab, select the "Specify an IP address:" option. 5. Type a valid IP Address and Subnet Mask, as shown below. 6. Press the OK button on the TCP/IP Properties screen, and then on the Network screen to save the current IP Address and Subnet Mask. Restart the PC to save the changes. 15
