5 IP addressing: introduction v IP address: 32-bit identifier for host, router interface v interface: connection between host/router and physical link router s typically have multiple interfaces host typically has one or two interfaces (e.g., wired Ethernet, wireless ) v IP addresses associated with each interface a subnet = a group of IP addresses = a group of interfaces =

6 IP addressing: introduction Q: how are interfaces actually connected? A: we ll learn about that in chapter 6, A: wired Ethernet interfaces connected by Ethernet switches For now: don t need to worry about how one interface is connected to another (with no intervening router) A: wireless WiFi interfaces connected by WiFi base station Network Layer 4-6

7 Subnets v IP address: a.b.c.d/x subnet part - high order bits host part - low order bits vwhat s a subnet? can physically reach each other without intervening router device interfaces with same subnet part of IP address subnet network consisting of 3 subnets Network Layer 4-7

8 Subnets recipe v to determine the subnets, detach each interface from its host or router, creating islands of isolated networks v each isolated network is called a subnet / / subnet /24 subnet mask: /24 Network Layer 4-8

10 IP addresses: how to get one? Q: How does a host get IP address? v hard-coded by system admin in a file Windows: control-panel->network->configuration- >tcp/ip->properties UNIX: /etc/rc.config v : Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: dynamically get address plug-and-play Network Layer 4-10

11 : Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol goal: allow host to dynamically obtain its IP address from network server when it joins network can renew the lease allows reuse of addresses support for mobile users overview: host broadcasts discover msg [optional] server responds with offer msg [optional] host requests IP address: request msg server sends address: ack msg Network Layer 4-11
