Document Overview The VidyoGateway is a 1U rack-mountable server that connects VidyoPortal users with users on systems using the SIP and H.323 videoconferencing protocols. In this manual, systems that use these protocols are referred to as legacy systems. Welcome to Vidyo Video conferencing solutions that just work. Simply. Intuitively. Reliably. Inexpensively. From anywhere. This document describes how to use the VidyoGateway to connect with a VidyoConferencing system that includes legacy systems. It is written for system administrators who must set up and maintain a VidyoConferencing system. This manual includes the following topics: 1. Definitions 2. Network Topologies & NAT/Firewall Traversal 3. Configuring the VidyoGateway 4. Dial Plans Note: To perform the setup and configuration described in this manual, you must have admin access to your VidyoGateway and super admin access to your VidyoPortal. 1

Definitions The following terms are used throughout this document: AVC Advanced Video Coding. Also known as MPEG-4 Part 10 or H.264. See also H.264/AVC protocol. CIF protocol Common Intermediate Format. A video format used in videoconferencing systems that supports both NTSC and PAL signals. CIF is part of the ITU H.261 videoconferencing standard. It specifies a data rate of 30 frames per second (fps), with each frame containing 288 lines and 352 pixels per line. codec Short for compressor/decompressor, a codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. Some popular codecs for computer video include MPEG, Indeo and Cinepak. firewall A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. gatekeeper A management tool for H.323 multimedia networks. Depending on the demands of the specific network, the gatekeeper oversees authentication, authorization, telephone directory and PBX (private branch exchange) services, as well as call control and routing. H.239 protocol A standard for the use, control and labeling of two simultaneous channels of video in a single video conference. For example, it is possible to see a speaking person within a main video screen and see their computer screen with diagrams, documents, screenshots and so on. H.245 protocol A control signaling protocol in the H.323 multimedia communication architecture for the exchange of end-to-end H.245 messages between communicating H.323 endpoints/terminals. H.245 control messages are carried over H.245 control channels. H.264/AVC protocol Also called Advanced Video Coding (AVC). A simple and straightforward video coding that provides enhanced compression performance and a network-friendly video representation. H.264/SVC protocol Also called Scalable Video Coding. A new video compression standard that enables a video stream to be broken into multiple resolutions, quality levels and bit rates. Vidyo uses this technology in its videoconferencing products. H.323 protocol A standard that addresses call signaling and control, multimedia transport and control and bandwidth control for point-to-point and multi-point conferences. The H.323 protocol provides audio-visual communication sessions on any packet network. HD (High Definition) A video format with a 1280X720 resolution and a 16 to 9 aspect ratio. (There are other HD formats but this is the one meant here.) 2

Definitions legacy system In this manual, any videoconferencing system based on the SIP or H.323 protocol. MCU Multipoint Control Unit. A device in videoconferencing that connects two or more audiovisual terminals together into one single videoconference call. The MCU collects information about the capabilities of the systems at each of the videoconference endpoints and sets the conference at the lowest common denominator so that everyone can participate. NAT Network Address Translation. An Internet standard that enables a local area network (LAN) to use one set of IP addresses for internal traffic and a second set of addresses for external traffic. A NAT box located where the LAN meets the Internet makes all necessary IP address translations. Point-to-Point call (direct call) A videoconference that takes place between just two users. No additional participants can join a point-to-point call. prefix A unique identifier for a call service. QoS Quality of Service. A networking term that specifies a guaranteed throughput level. SD (Standard Definition) A video format with a 640X360 resolution and a 16 to 9 aspect ratio. (Traditional broadcast television SD has a different format. This is the one meant here.) SIP protocol Session Initiation Protocol. A signaling protocol used for controlling multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol (IP). TCS4 A special routing method for incoming H.320 video calls. TCS4 allows direct inward dialing to an endpoint on the IP network through the gateway when DID is not available. H.323 endpoints on the IP network register with the gatekeeper using extension numbers. When an ISDN terminal dials one of the gateway phone numbers followed by a TCS4 extension, the call is routed directly to the corresponding IP endpoint registered with that extension. 3

Network Topologies Vidyo recommends following these guidelines when setting up your VidyoGateway: Locate the VidyoGateway as close as possible to your legacy system(s), preferably on the same LAN. If the legacy systems are in dispersed locations, install the VidyoGateway on the same LAN as your VidyoRouter. If the VidyoGateway is on a QoS network give high priority to the traffic beteen the VidyoGateway and the legacy system(s). Specify lower QoS for traffic between the VidyoGateway and your VidyoRouter. NAT/Firewall Traversal Gateway calls between legacy endpoints are not supported if the VidyoGateway is behind a NAT/firewall and the legacy endpoint is on a different network. Gateway calls between the VidyoGateway and a legacy system behind a NAT/firewall are supported when the VidyoGateway is on a public network and you have configured your firewall to allow the standard H.323 or SIP ports needed for videoconferencing. For H.323, those ports are: TCP port 1720 for call signaling and call setup TCP port 1719 for gatekeeper registration Use dynamic UDP port ranging for ports You must define a range of at least Note: For information about specifying ports in the VidyoGateway, see VidyoGateway Configuration on page 7. 4

Network Topologies Example 1: Multiple Vidyo users connected to a single legacy device Example 2: Multiple Vidyo users connected to multiple legacy endpoints using a legacy MCU Example 3: Multiple Vidyo users connected to multiple legacy endpoints using the VidyoGateway 5
