Configuring the syslog server The NCM server includes a syslog server, which records messages sent from devices within the network. The syslog server starts on port 514 when you start the NCM server. However, if another syslog server is already running on your system, the NCM syslog server does not start and you cannot view the contents of the syslog file from within the NCM environment. NN

Chapter 2 Configuring the NCM server 23 If you want to view syslog messages from within the NCM environment, you must edit the current syslog server s syslog.conf file. On Windows systems, refer to the server documentation to determine the location of the syslog.conf file. Avaya recommends that you edit the syslog.conf file only if you understand syslog server functions and if you know the facility and level (or priority) of the syslog messages sent from the Avaya BCM devices. After you determined the facility and level values, edit the syslog.conf file and direct only those facility/level values that you want to view within NCM to /usr/cm/server/bin/syslog.txt. To disable or enable the syslog server 1 In the navigation pane, select Server Setup > SYSLOG Daemon. 2 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Properties tab. Figure 5 shows the Basic properties tab for the syslog server. Figure 5 Basic properties tab for syslog server 3 Clear the Enabled check box to disable the syslog server. NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

24 Chapter 2 Configuring the NCM server Configuring the FTP server With NCM 6.0, you can archive configurations from and send configurations to an FTP server. You can share larger files with an external server with greater security than when using TFTP. If you have an FTP server that can specifically handle these operations, you can configure the parameters in NCM as a time-saving measure. The FTP information is then in the corresponding fields when you use the specified FTP server in your archive and send operations. To configure an FTP server 1 In the navigation pane, select Server Setup > FTP Servers. 2 From the Palette tab in the context-sensitive pane, double-click the FTP Server icon. FTP Server should appear in the navigation pane in the FTP Servers folder. 3 Select the FTP Server and click the Properties tab. 4 Enter the FTP server information in the fields provided; you must enter the Hostname or IP Address and User Name. NN

25 Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server This chapter identifies key administrative tasks and provides recommendations for setting up user accounts, access permissions, and notifications. This chapter contains the following topics: Managing log files on page 25 Viewing server events on page 26 Configuring logs on page 27 Administering user groups and user accounts on page 28 Setting up notification on page 40 Using command line options on page 45 Managing log files You can record and view actions and activities occurring in the server and client from a centralized location. The log setup property allows you to configure the four log files. You can specify when logs rotate out, whether messages are written to the srvlog.txt file, or to a local or remote syslog server. The message content includes server messages, all messages to the client messages window, and all Audit Log events. There are four log files: svrlog.txt Displays events that appear on the server console syslog.txt Displays syslog messages as related to the syslog server if configured under Server Setup auditlog.txt Displays messages about NCM operations errlog.txt Displays all error messages from the server console NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

26 Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server These files are stored in the log directory. To limit file size, you can now truncate all log files by date. You can also use the log rotator to archive a limited number of log files. See Configuring logs on page 27 for more information. Note: NCM logging include no information about Avaya BCM alarms. NCM does not record Avaya BCM alarms. Viewing server events The NCM server records messages about its operation in an audit log file. You can view the NCM server s audit log, and you can also specify the type of information that you want to view. To view the NCM server audit log 1 Open the NCM Server window. 2 Select Log > Filter to view the filters that can apply messages that the server generates. 3 Choose the type of messages that you want the server window to display. Table 3 lists the type of information that you can display in the NCM Server window. Table 3 Server information types for the event log Types None Severe Error Warning Informative Description No messages appear. Only messages about severe errors appear. Messages about errors and severe errors appear. Messages about warnings, errors, and severe errors appear. Informative messages, warnings, and all errors appear. This is the default setting. NN

Configuring logs Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server 27 You can centrally record and view events that occur on the server and client. You can use the log setup property to configure the four log files. You can specify when logs rotate out and whether messages are written to the srvlog.txt file or to a local or remote syslog server. The message content includes server messages, all messages to the client messages window, and all Audit Log events. To configure the logs 1 In the navigation pane, select Server Setup > Log Setup. 2 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Properties tab. 3 In the Properties tab, click the tab of the log file you want to configure (Figure 6). Figure 6 Log setup property 4 In the ServerLog and SysLog tabs, select the logging location. The default is the srvlog.txt file. All server, client, and messages are sent to the srvlog.txt file with the correct timestamp and username. 5 Select the syslog check box to specify syslog as the logging location. You can choose to use the default settings or enter the IP address and port for the syslog daemon. If compatible with the syslog, select a facility identifier. When you choose syslog, server log information is sent to the syslog specified. The syslog receives all messages and logs them with the correct timestamp, facility, and username. NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

28 Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server Figure 7 Syslog properties tab 6 Select file rotation. File rotation determines how frequently files are rotated out and a new log created. The default is by date. If you clear the Date check box, you cannot configure the fields that follow. 7 Enter the number of days between rotations. The default is 30. After 30 days, the log is renamed and another log is created to log the information. 8 Enter the number of log files to archive. The default is 5. Administering user groups and user accounts As the NCM administrator, you are responsible for creating accounts for network administrators who are authorized to configure Avaya BCM devices. The number of users that you authorize depends on the unique requirements of your organization. For example, if your organization is relatively small, you might decide to control all network configuration yourself. If your enterprise is large, you might authorize many users. Using NCM s capabilities, service providers can manage and service multiple Avaya BCM networks. By assigning users into groups with specific assigned functions and then further controlling the access permissions for individual users within the user group constraints, providers have capacity to support multiple customers at one time. NN

Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server 29 With the NCM server, you can add user groups and user accounts. You can combine users who perform similar functions (and probably need access to the same set of items) in one group and assign access permissions to the group instead of to each user account. Note: You can have an unlimited number of user groups and users; your network capacity may be your only limiting factor. However, NCM allows only 5 or 20 concurrent users depending on your license. To add a user group 1 Start an NCM client session. 2 Log on as Administrator. 3 In the navigation pane, select Server Setup > User Groups. 4 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Palette tab. 5 Use one of the following methods to add a new group to User Groups: Double-click the Group icon in the Palette. Drag the Group icon from the Palette to the User Groups icon in the navigation pane. Click the Group icon in the Palette, and then click the Paste button. Note: Although you can choose the method you are most comfortable with, the procedures in this guide use the double-click method. 6 If necessary, open User Groups. In the navigation pane, you see a new user group, named Group1. See the next section for information about how to rename a user group. Figure 8 shows an example of the opened User Groups. Figure 8 Opened User Groups item NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

30 Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server Renaming a user group NCM assigns the name Group to each new user group that you create. You should rename groups to identify them. For example, if you support three customer networks, you might want to create three groups and call one Customer X_LAN administrators, one Customer Y_LAN administrators, and the other Customer X_BRU administrators. To rename a user group 1 In the navigation pane, right-click the user group item that you want to rename, and then select Rename. The Rename dialog box opens. 2 Type a name for the group. Figure 9 shows an example of renaming a user group to LAN Administrators. Figure 9 Renamed user group 3 Click OK. NN

Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server 31 Setting function security properties for user groups You can use the Function Security tab to grant or deny user groups access to particular features of NCM. To set the function security properties for a new user group 1 In the navigation pane, select the user group for which you want to set the properties. 2 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Properties tab. 3 In the Properties tab, click the Function Security tab (Figure 10). Figure 10 Function Security tab for user groups 4 Clear the permissions that you do not want the user group to have. By clearing permissions at the group level, you assign the same permissions to each user in that user group. Users cannot perform the selected operations and the icons that correspond to those operations are disabled in the toolbar. Note: The owner of the group, if different from the administrator, is able to override the permissions the administrator sets. For information, see Setting access permissions on user accounts on page 37. Executing Wizards functional security You can now use the Functional Security tab to grant or deny user groups access to run the wizards included in NCM 6.0. NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

32 Chapter 3 Administering the NCM server To enable the wizard functional security properties for user groups 1 Log on as Administrator. 2 In the navigation pane, select the user group for which you want to set the properties. 3 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Properties tab. 4 Under the Properties tab, select the Functional Security tab. 5 In the Tools row, locate the Execute Wizards check box. Figure 11 Execute Wizards check box By default, User groups are not able to run wizards. 6 To enable the use of wizards, select the Execute Wizards check box. However, if you do not select the Execute Wizard check box, a user logged on to the radius server does no have privileges to create, edit, or delete custom wizards. For more information about using the custom wizards feature to create, edit, and delete custom wizards, see Using NCM 6.0 to Manage Avaya BCM 6.0 (NN ). Setting access permissions on user accounts Each item in the NCM database has a set of associated access permissions. Access permissions are based on the assignment of two characteristics: access group and privilege. The access groups, which establish groupings of users, are owner, group, and everyone. By default, the owner of an item is the user who adds the item to the hierarchy. The group for an item is the user group (or groups) that is given access to the item. The owner of the item grants access to user groups. Everyone includes the entire set of NCM users. When you add a new user account to the NCM database, you become the owner of the user account and NCM assigns the default access permissions to the item. Table 4 lists the default access permissions. NN

Chapter 4 Using NCM to manage RADIUS devices 47 With Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) support, the NCM server can authenticate and authorize NCM users to an external RADIUS server. A RADIUS server is used as the password authentication method on the device if the NCM Account Management value, in the Configuration Data > Avaya BCM device name > Configuration > Administrator Access > Security Policies > Authentication Service Policy tab, is set to RADIUS. To enable and use RADIUS mode in NCM, at least one RADIUS-enabled device must be on the network you manage with NCM. This means that you must have at least one RADIUS server in the network that is configured with device privilege definitions. Note: The Password Change Wizard and the User Manager Wizard are disabled when RADIUS mode is enabled. NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

48 Using NCM to manage RADIUS devices Privilege levels NCM requires the RADIUS server to provide one or more privilege levels when the user authentication is accepted. Table 7 lists the privilege levels. These must be provided in big endian format (network byte order). Table 7 Privilege levels Privilege name Value Description NcmLogin NCM log on NcmBackup NCM backup function NcmRestore NCM restore function NcmImport NCM import function NcmExport NCM export function NcmExecWizards NCM executable wizards Workflow impacts When RADIUS mode is enabled, the RADIUS server verifies the access privileges of a user as that user attempts to perform any of the following activities. The RADIUS server authenticates the user and verifies their access permissions at each stage to ensure they have sufficient permissions to perform each stage of the following tasks: logging on using Wizards importing exporting re-importing backing up updating restoring creating and executing a scheduled job NN

Using NCM to manage RADIUS devices 49 Note: In local mode, User loses control over privilege access if Override Group is unchecked. The Override Group automatically modifies all the privileges that is assigned to the Group. If User has Execute Wizard privilege and disables Override Group option, the Execute Wizard gets unchecked for all the users in the group. But if the Group has Execute Wizard enabled, then even if one User disables Override Group option, the rest of the users in the Group will have the Execute Wizard privilege. Enabling RADIUS Complete the following high-level tasks to enable RADIUS mode in NCM: 1 Define the NcmLogin privilege on the RADIUS server; assign this privilege to all appropriate users. 2 Define NcmImport, NcmExport, NcmBackup, NcmRestore, and NcmExecWizard privileges; assign this privilege to all appropriate users. 3 Enable RADIUS mode authentication on the Avaya BCM network elements. 4 Define users in the RADIUS database. Note: Ensure that users assigned the NcmImport privilege are also assigned the corresponding privilege on the Avaya BCM device. 5 Launch the NCM client and log on as Administrator. 6 Enable RADIUS authentication (complete the procedure To enable RADIUS for NCM ). After you successfully enable RADIUS authentication, all subsequent log on attempts are authenticated by the RADIUS server. NCM 6.0 Administration Guide

50 Using NCM to manage RADIUS devices To enable RADIUS for NCM 1 In the NCM tree, select Server Setup > RADIUS Setup. The RADIUS setup panel appears. 2 In the context-sensitive pane, click the Properties tab. 3 To add a RADIUS server, click the plus sign (+). 4 In the RADIUS Servers table, click in each column of the table to enter the following attributes: Column Priority Name IP address Auth. Port Shared Secret Value Select a priority for the server (primary, secondary) Name of the server to be used for authentication IP address of the server to be used for authentication Port number of the server to be used for authentication Key required for the Avaya BCM to communicate with the authentication server NN
