1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router and IP Office Using Frame Relay over T1 - Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe a sample configuration for Voice over IP (VoIP) over a Frame Relay link between an Avaya IP Office 412, ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router and an Avaya IP Office 406V2. Testing was conducted at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 33

2 1. Introduction Figure 1 shows two offices of a small business connected via a Frame Relay. As illustrated in Figure 1, the Avaya IP Office 406V2 (Site 1) is connected to the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router via the T1 using Frame Relay. The Cisco 3725 is acting as a layer 2 Frame-Relay switch. The ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router is connected to the IP412 via the LAN1 interface Quality of Service (QoS) Considerations The ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router supports RFC1490 Frame-Relay encapsulation with no interleaving and fragmentation. Without interleaving and fragmentation, the serialization delay associated with the transmission of large packets can translate into jitter for VoIP packets and cause the degradation of the perceived voice quality. This is particularly a problem with low bandwidths. If this is an issue, the ADTRAN NetVanta 3305 Access Router, which supports interleaving, can be used instead. See item [3] in Section 11 for information on this configuration. 2 of 33

Equipment and Software Validated The following equipment and software/firmware were used for the sample configuration provided: Equipment Software/Firmware Avaya IP Office IP406v2 3.1(42) Avaya IP Office IP (42) Avaya 4620 IP Telephones 2.3 Dell PowerConnect 3448P switch ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router OS version E Boot Rom Cisco 3725 Access Router OS version 12.2(8r)T2 Software (fc1) 3. Configure IP Office at Site 1 This section describes the IP Office configuration at Site 1. This includes configuring: Gatekeeper parameters T1 parameters A Service for the T1 A Remote Access Service A virtual WAN port An IP Route An IP Line for Site 2 4 of 33

5 IP Office is configured via the Manager program. Log into the IP Office Manager PC and go to Start Programs IP Office Manager to launch the Manager application. Log into the Manager application using the appropriate credentials. There are two panels in IP Office Manager. The left panel contains the configuration tree. Click on these items to configure the system. 5 of 33

6 1. Configure the Gatekeeper settings. In IP Office Manager, double click on System in the in the left panel. Select the Gatekeeper tab. Modify the SIG DSCP and DSCP values as illustrated below. Click the OK button. 6 of 33

7 2. Configure the T1. In IP Office Manager, select Line in the left panel. Select the T1 used for the Frame-Relay link in the right panel. Select the channels that will be used for the link (Multiple channels can be selected via the shift or ctrl keys). Change the Type to Clear Channel 64K. Click the OK button. 7 of 33

8 3. Modify the Framing and Zero Suppression. Select the Advanced Tab. Choose the appropriate values for Framing and Zero Suppression (as illustrated below). These values must match what is administered on the ADTRAN 3205 Access Router (see Step 1 in Section 5.2). Click the OK button. 8 of 33

9 4. Create a Service. Select Service in the left panel. Right click in the right panel and select New. Select Wan Service (Note: This is not the default). Click the OK button. 9 of 33

10 5. Name the Service FR_link. No other items on this tab need to be changed. 10 of 33

11 6. Configure an IP Address and Subnet Mask for the service. Select the IP Tab and enter the IP Address and IP Mask. Ensure that the IP Address is on the same subnet of the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router s Frame Relay DLCI IP Address (see Step 4 Section 5.2 for details). Retain all other defaults. Click the OK button. 11 of 33

12 7. Create a WAN port for the T1 Line. Select WAN Port in the left column. Right click in the right panel and select New. Name the port LINEX.Y where X is the Line number (in this case 1) and Y is the first channel that is used for data on the line. Channels numbers start with 0. Configure the Speed to be multiplied by the number of channels used. This example used 20 channels. Select the Mode to be SyncFrameRelay. Note: The number of channels on the T1 cannot exceed the total number of data channels in the IP Office. 12 of 33

13 8. Configure the Frame-Relay parameters. Select the Frame Relay Tab. Set the Frame Management Type and Fragmentation Method as illustrated below. Note the ADTRAN 3205 only supports RFC1490. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. 13 of 33

14 9. Configure a DLCI. Select the DLCIs Tab. Right click in the DLCI box and click Add. Set the Frame Link Type (Note: RFC1490 is not the default), DLCI and CIR as illustrated below. The RAS Name is the one that was created in Step 5 of this section. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. Click the OK button on the DLCI dialog and then click the OK button on the WAN Port Form. 14 of 33

15 10. Create an IP Route that will use the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router (via the Frame-Relay link) as the Default Gateway. Select IP Route in the left panel. Right click in the right panel and select New. Enter the IP Address of the Frame-Relay interface on the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router in the Gateway field and set the Destination to be the Service created in Step 4 of this section. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. Click the OK button. 15 of 33

16 11. Create an IP Line for Site 2. Select Line in the left panel. Right click in the right panel and select New. Set the Line Number to be an unused number. Set the Incoming and Outgoing Group ID to be an unused number. Retain the defaults for the remaining fields. 16 of 33

17 12. Configure the IP settings for the line. Select the VoIP tab. Set the Gateway IP Address to be the IP Office 412 (at Site 2) LAN1 IP Address. Set the Compression Mode to be the same as the VoIP line created on Site 2 (See Step 3 in Section 4). Check the Enable Faststart, Allow Direct Media Path, Voice Networking and Fax Transport Support options. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. Click the OK button. 17 of 33

18 13. Save the settings to the Control Unit. In IP Office Manager, Press the Disk Icon, or go under File->Save. Press OK for the warning dialog box shown below. Select Immediately for the Reboot Mode and Press the OK button. 18 of 33

19 4. Configure IP Office at Site 2 This section describes the IP Office Configuration at Site 2. This includes configuring: An IP Route Creating an IP Line for Site 1 1. Create an IP Route that will use the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router as the Default Gateway. Select IP Route in the left column. Right click in the right panel and select New. Enter the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router Ethernet IP Address in the Gateway IP Address field and set the Destination as LAN1. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. Click the OK button. 19 of 33

20 2. Create an IP Line for Site 1. Select Line in the left column. Right click in the right panel and select New. Set the Line Number to be unique. Set the Incoming and Outgoing Group ID to be unique. Retain the default values for the remaining fields. 20 of 33

21 3. Configure the IP settings for the line. Select the VoIP tab. Set the Gateway IP Address to be the IP Office 406V2 (at Site 1) IP Address. Set the Compression Mode to be the same as the Site 1 VoIP Line. Check the Enable Faststart, Allow Direct Media Path, Voice Networking and Fax Transport Support options. Configure the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router This section describes the configuration for the ADTRAN NetVanta ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router LAN Side The following are the steps needed to configure the Ethernet Port for the connection to the IP Office 412 at Site 1. These include: Changing the Ethernet port to be a trunk Configuring an interface for the voice VLAN Creating an IP Route 1. Connect to the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router with its serial cable. Run a terminal emulator, such as HyperTerminal with settings of 9600Kb/s, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no parity. Set the flow control to none and change the emulation mode to VT Configure the Ethernet port to be an 802.1Q trunk. Router(config)#interface Ethernet 0/1 Router(config-eth 0/1) encapsulation 802.1q 3. Configure a sub-interface to be on the Voice VLAN with the same subnet as the IP412. Router(config)#interface Ethernet 0/1.30 Router(config-eth 0/1.30) vlan-id 24 Router(config-eth 0/1.30) ip address Create an IP route. Router(config)#ip route of 33

23 5.2. ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router T1 Side The connection to Site 2 via the T1 to the IP Office 406V2 includes the following steps: 1. Configure the T1 to match the parameters on IP Office 406V2. The T1 parameters in IP Office can be found on the Advanced tab of the T1 Line form (see Step 3 in Section 3). Router>enable Password: Router#configure Router(config)# interface t1 1/1 Router(config-t1 1/1)#coding b8zs Router(config-t1 1/1)#framing esf 2. Configure the channels on the T1 to be in the first tdm group. The speed of the channels is 64K. This corresponds to the IP Office Clear Channel 64 selection on the Channel Dialog of the T1 Line form. The timeslots are the channels on the T1 that are used for IP traffic. Router(config-t1 1/1)#tdm-group 1 timeslots 1-20 speed Configure a Frame-Relay interface. Enter a name (executed via the description command). Assign the Frame-Relay connection to the T1 line. Set the frame-relay type interface and lmi type to be compatible with the Cisco 3725 settings. This is done via the cross-connect command. The first parameter is the number of the cross-connect interface. The second parameter is the T1 interface. The third parameter is the tdmgroup created in step 2 and the last parameter is the frame-relay interface number. 24 4. Create a DLCI for the Frame-Relay interface. The DLCI number must be the same as the one defined on the IP Office (see Step 9 in Section 3). Configure an IP Address and Subnet Mask for the DLCI. Router(config)# interface frame-relay 3.1 Router(config-fr 3.1)#frame-relay interface-dlci 100 Router(config-fr 3.1)#ip address Create an IP Route that will route traffic destined for the IP Office 406V2 out the Frame- Relay link. Use the IP Address of the Service on IP Office that corresponds to the Frame- Relay link (see Step 6 in Section 3). Router(config)#ip route of 33

25 6. Configure the Cisco 3725 Router For this configuration, the Cisco 3725 acted as the network, so this section is for reference only. Testing The interoperability testing focused on verifying interoperability between the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router and Avaya IP Office. QoS was tested in both a high and low bandwidth environment. 26 of 33

27 7.1. General Test Approach The general test approach was to connect the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router to the IP Offices as described in Figure 1. Calls were placed to and from Site 1 and 2 and talkpath was verified. 8. Test Results All tests passed successfully. All products operated as expected. The QoS results are specified in Section 1.1 and should be taken into account during the planning phase. The ADTRAN 3205 Access Router does not support QoS, so configurations that rely on that feature should use the ADTRAN 3305 Router. 9. Verification and Troubleshooting 9.1. ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router Troubleshooting First check to see that all of the cables are connected to the appropriate ports on the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router and IP Office. Check to see if the interfaces are up on the ADTRAN NetVanta 3205 Access Router. The show interfaces command provides detailed information about the administered Ethernet, T1 and Frame Relay interface. Check the following: The T1 line protocol is up. The T1 is administered to use the frame-relay interface. This can be seen by the Encapsulation information for the T1 TDM group. The Ethernet port is up and acting as a trunk (indicated by encapsulation). The frame-relay interface has a DLCI (same number as the on the IP Office) with an IP Address and Subnet Mask Show Interfaces Sample Output Below is sample output for the show interfaces command. 30 9.2. IP Office Troubleshooting The System Monitor (available via the IP Office Administration CD) application is started via Start->Programs->IP Office->Monitor. To view the frame-relay information, select Trace Options under the Filters Menu. Select the Frame Relay tab and check the options as shown below. 30 of 33
