8 1 TELNET FUNCTION: OVERVIEW About Telnet Function The Telnet function enables you to change the settings of the equipment or confirm its information remotely by accessing from a client computer to the equipment using the Telnet protocol. With this function, you can perform some of the settings normally done on the control panel of the equipment or on the TopAccess menus. To Administrators To prevent the configuration settings from being changed illegally or similar, change the initial administrator password at the time of shipping before you use this product. Also, the administrator password should be altered periodically. The following models support the Telnet function: e-studio281c/351c/451c, e-studio202l/232/282, e-studio203l/233/283, e-studio352/452, e-studio353/453, e-studio520/600/720/850, e-studio523/603/723/853 e-studio2330c/2820c/2830c/3520c/3530c/4520c, e-studio5520c/6520c/6530c Telnet access to the equipment is protected with an administrator password. However, communications between client computers and the equipment are not protected with security systems. In this function you can access the equipment using IPv4 or IPv6. However, you can only change the settings related to IPv4. 6 About Telnet Function

Setting on the touch panel This section describes how to set up the Telnet function on the touch panel of the equipment. Press the [USER FUNCTIONS] button on the control panel. 1 2 Press the [ADMIN] tab and then press [PASSWORD]. 3 Enter the administrator password (6 to 10 digits) and then press [OK]. 4 Ask the administrator password of the administrator of the equipment. Select the desired items shown below. 7 8 ENABLE TELNET: Press [ENABLE] to enable the Telnet server. Press [DISABLE] to disable it. [PORT NUMBER]: Enter a port number for using the Telnet server. The number is normally 23. TELNET USER NAME: You can see the user name of the administrator for accessing the equipment with the Telnet function. Admin is set by default and this cannot be changed. Any user account cannot be added. [TELNET PASSWORD]: Set a password for accessing the equipment with the Telnet function. System is set by default. The password can be reset within 15 digits. Press [OK]. The screen returns to the NETWORK screen. Press [APPLY NOW]. NETWORK INITIALIZING disappears when the setting is completed. Setting up Equipment 9

14 3 USING TELNET FUNCTION Accessing Equipment 1 Enter the command below from the system command prompt. For example, when the IP address of the equipment is , enter the command below and then press the [Enter] key. 2 3 Enter Admin for the Username field and then press the [Enter] key. Enter a password ( System is set by default) and then press the [Enter] key. 4 The entered password is not displayed. The text below appears when the entered user name and the password are correct. This section *** varies according to the model name. If you enter an incorrect user name or password three times consecutively, Telnet access between the equipment and the client computer is automatically canceled. Restart the procedure from step 1. While one client computer is accessing the equipment with the Telnet function, no other client computers can access it with the Telnet function. 12 Accessing Equipment

15 3 USING TELNET FUNCTION Setting up Equipment To set up the equipment using the Telnet function, you can use either of the following two methods: entering commands as text on a command prompt screen in the Command Mode, or keying in digits displayed in a menu on the command prompt screen in the Menu Mode. If no setting has been entered from a client computer in the 5 minutes after Telnet access was made between the equipment and the client computer, Telnet access is automatically canceled. In this case, settings already entered are also canceled. Restart the procedure from step 1 of Accessing Equipment ( P.12) if you want to continue the setting. Command Mode About Command Mode When Telnet access is made from a client computer to the equipment, you will log on in the Command Mode. In the Command Mode, you can change the settings of the equipment by executing commands. Setting procedure in Command Mode Enter a command and a value as shown below from the command prompt screen of the client computer, and then press the [Enter] key. For the details of the commands, see P.14 Basic commands and P.14 Setting commands. For example, if you want to change the IP address of the equipment to , enter the command below and then press the [Enter] key. Enter the save command if you want to save the settings. When you enter the exit command, a message asking if you want to save the settings appears. If you want to save the settings, enter Y, or enter N if you do not, and then press the [Enter] key. When the settings are saved, Now configured with the new parameter information. appears. Setting up Equipment 13

16 3 USING TELNET FUNCTION Basic commands In the Command Mode, the basic commands shown below are available. The commands must be entered all in small characters. Enter only a command as basic commands do not have set values. Then press the [Enter] key to execute it. Command Description? or help Shows the Help menu for the Telnet function. / Shows the current setting information. Unchangeable setting items are shown as (Read-Only). menu Changes the menu from the Command Mode to the Menu Mode. save Saves the settings and ends Telnet access with the equipment. exit Ends Telnet access with the equipment. Setting commands In the Command Mode, the setting commands shown below are available. The commands must be entered totally in small letters. Enter a command and its set value. passwd Command Description Changes the password to be used for Telnet access within 15 characters. The password must be entered twice. e.g.)when the new password is abc123, enter as follows: netbios-name Changes the NetBIOS name of the equipment within 15 characters. Use only letters of the alphabet, digits and hyphens. address-mode Changes the setting method of an IP address. If a static IP address is used, key in 1. If you obtain an IP address with DHCP or Auto IP, key in 2. If you obtain it only with DHCP, key in 3. ip Changes the IP address of the equipment. The IP address is changeable only when the Address Mode is set at 1 (Static). subnet-mask Changes the subnet mask of the equipment. The subnet mask is changeable only when the Address Mode is set at 1 (Static). default-gw Changes the gateway of the equipment. The gateway is changeable only when the Address Mode is set at 1 (Static). If you want to disable it, key in pri-dns-svr Changes the IP address of primary DNS server. If you want to disable it, key in sec-dns-svr Changes the IP address of secondary DNS server. If you want to disable it, key in pri-wins-svr Changes the IP address of primary WINS server. If you want to disable it, key in sec-wins-svr Changes the IP address of secondary WINS server. If you want to disable it, key in telnet-port Changes a port number ( ) for the Telnet server. raw-printing Changes the settings for Raw TCP print service. Key in 1 if you want to enable it, or key in 2 to disable it. raw-port Changes a port number ( ) for Raw TCP print service. raw-bidirect Changes the settings for Raw bi-directional communication. Key in 1 if you want to enable it, or key in 2 to disable it. lpd-printing Change the settings for LPD print service. Key in 1 if you want to enable it, or key in 2 to disable it. lpd-banner Change the settings for printing the banner (header) page of LPD print job. Key in 1 if you want to enable it, or key in 2 to disable it. 14 Setting up Equipment

17 3 USING TELNET FUNCTION 3.USING TELNET FUNCTION Menu Mode About Menu Mode When you enter the menu command in the Command Mode, the mode is switched to the Menu Mode. In the Menu Mode, you can change the settings of the equipment by keying in the digits displayed on the menus. Once the mode is switched to the Menu Mode, it cannot be returned to the Command Mode. Setting procedure in Menu Mode In the Menu Mode, the Main Menu is displayed. The Main Menu has 4 menus as shown below. If you want to change the settings of the equipment, key in 2 and then press the [Enter] key. Key in the number of the menu whose settings you want to change, and then press the [Enter] key. If you want to return to the Main Menu, key in 0 and then press the [Enter] key. Setting up Equipment 15

18 3 USING TELNET FUNCTION If you want to save the changed settings or end Telnet access, key in 4 on the Main Menu and then press the [Enter] key. If you want to save the settings, key in 1 and then press the [Enter] key. If you want to end Telnet access without saving the settings, key in 2 and then press the [Enter] key. If the settings are changed, a message asking if you want to save the settings appears. If you want to save the settings, enter Y, or enter N if you do not, and then press the [Enter] key. For the details of the Function List for the administrator, refer to the following section of the MFP Management guide: Chapter 4 Appendix Function list (Administrator) NETWORK SETTING - NETWORK SERVICE - TELNET SERVICE Function Description User ENABLE TELNET Shows whether the Telnet function is enabled or disabled. NO PORT NUMBER Shows the Telnet port number. NO PRINT USER NAME Shows the user name of the Telnet function. NO Function List 17
