Greenplum DCA to x Upgrade Guide 1. Planning the Upgrade This guide is intended for EMC personnel responsible for upgrading the EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance from software versions to or software version to Assumptions for upgrading from to : This guide assumes that the current DCA software version is If the DCA is running a software version earlier than , you must install each interim upgrade in sequence until the appliance is at version Upgrading the DCA from version x, x or directly is not supported. Assumptions for upgrading from to (integrates security updates for Linux RedHat 5.9): This guide assumes that the current DCA software version is Upgrading the DCA from version x, , or directly to is not supported. Important: First, determine the required upgrade path for your DCA based on the above assumptions. For upgrade procedures, locate the appropriate EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance Software Upgrade Guide on Support Zone in > Support by Product > = Greenplum Data Computing Appliance > Documentation. Upgrade Overview The follow high-level tasks must be planned before a DCA Software upgrade. DCA Software Upgrade Tasks Upgrade Overview 1
Greenplum DCA to x Upgrade Guide Preface Important information The upgrade package is available in one or both of the following locations: Support Zone in > Support by Product > = Greenplum Data Computing Appliance > Downloads Upgrading to installs Greenplum Database binaries and Greenplum Command Center version If you upgrade the Greenplum Database version from a version earlier than 4.2.x.x, you need to follow the DCA Database Upgrade Procedure on Support Zone before starting the database. By default, new Greenplum Database binaries are copied to each server, but the symbolic link is not changed. The --db option will modify the symbolic link to point to the new Greenplum Database. Only use this option if you are upgrading within a 4.2.x.x version. For an overview, see Figure 1.1, Greenplum Database Code Upgrade Overview on page 3. In order to complete this upgrade, there should be ~10GB free on the OS partition of the Primary Master Server. Use the df -h command to check available space on /dev/sda2. Beginning with DCA software , some Greenplum Performance Monitor functionality has been replaced by Command Center and Health Monitor. Performance Monitor software is not removed, and can only be used with Command Center if a different web server port is specified during installation. See Setup Command Center on page 9 for details. Due to the upgrade to RHEL 5.9, this release of DCA is not compatible with Greenplum Database version 4.2.1; you must upgrade to Greenplum Database version With the release of DCA software version , the DCA system is automatically in a hardened state and also has further customizable security settings (see the DCA Security Configuration Guide for details). Therefore, there is no longer the need for Secured Mode and Unsecured Mode functionality. For releases after , you will not need to revert to an unsecured mode before upgrading. For however, you must revert from s to before upgrading. Upgrade Overview 2
Greenplum DCA to x Upgrade Guide Preface DCA Software and Greenplum Database Upgrade Process Upgrading the DCA Software and Greenplum Database are separate activities but you should keep both activities in mind when you are planning to upgrade either one. The Greenplum Database does not have any dependencies for the DCA Software version, but several DCA Software features depend on the Greenplum Database to be at a certain level. It is best practice to upgrade the Greenplum Database software independently of the DCA Software. Figure 1.1 Greenplum Database Code Upgrade Overview About the DCA Software The DCA software is a collection of software that runs on the DCA. The software contains an operating system, device drivers, Greenplum Database, and software settings. By updating the software, new versions of software are applied which contain fixes and enhanced functionality. Updated versions of the Greenplum Database are the only software component that is released independently. DCA Software and Greenplum Database Upgrade Process 3

Greenplum DCA to x Upgrade Guide Chapter 2: Upgrading the DCA Software Optional - Configuring DCA version or DCA version The network fault tolerance feature relies on a configuration file in order to monitor link aggregation groups. You do not need to configure the feature unless the DCA runs customized aggregation switch LAGs. If you need to address customization requirements, access the configuration file in /opt/dca/var/aggr_group.conf and change values according to the customer setup. The following table shows the default LAG values that are assigned to switch ports. To modify, change the value in the Default LAG Values column to the values the customer specifies. Table 2.1 Default LAG Value per Switch Port Switch Ports Default LAG Values Verify the firmware level Verify that the server s PowerEdge Raid Controller (PERC) firmware, BIOS and OMSA versions are up to date. See Update the PERC firmware, server BIOS and OMSA on page 14. Start Greenplum Database 1. If the Greenplum Database was upgraded from a version of 4.0.x.x or 4.1.x.x you need to follow the upgrade procedure listed in the DCA Database Upgrade Guide - Minor Version Upgrade. If the database was running a version of 4.2.x.x, this is not necessary. 2. Start Greenplum Database: $ gpstart -a 3. Check the mirror status and standby master server status. $ gpstate Verify the firmware level 8
Greenplum DCA to x Upgrade Guide Chapter 2: Upgrading the DCA Software Verify that the DCA master standby is smdw and there are zero (0) mirror segments acting as primary segments: Master standby = smdw Total number mirror segments acting as primary segments = 0. Setup Command Center Prior to DCA software , Performance Monitor Console was used to track performance metrics and cluster health. Starting in , Greenplum Command Center replaces Performance Monitor. Follow the steps in this section to set up Command Center. The existing Performance Monitor software is not removed during an upgrade. If the customer wishes to use Greenplum Performance Monitor and Command Center concurrently, specify a different port such as in step 2-e. Access Command Center over this new port. 1. If the upgrade was run without the --db switch, you will need to create the Command Center symbolic link. Verify that the greenplum-cc-web symbolic link exists: $ ll /usr/local/greenplum-cc-web If the greenplum-cc-web symbolic link does not exist, issue the following command as the user root to create it: # ln -s /usr/local/greenplum-cc-web /usr/local/greenplum-cc-web 2. Launch the Command Center Console setup utility as the user gpadmin: $ gpcmdr --setup You will be prompted for the following information: a. Provide an instance name for the Greenplum Database instance monitored by this console, for example dca_mdw. b. Specify whether the Greenplum Database master for this instance is remote or not. Select n to specify that the Greenplum Database master for this instance is on the local host, not a remote host. Console performance is best when the console and Greenplum Database master are on the same host. c. Provide a display name for the instance, for example Greenplum DCA. This name is shown in the console user interface. d. Provide a port number for the Greenplum Database master instance. The default is e. Provide a port number for the Command Center Console web server. The default is f. Specify whether you want SSL to be enabled.
