NETW 110 Lab 4 Using eth0 Configuration Mounting Drives and Devices Page 1 Objective At the conclusion of this lab, the student will be able to perform necessary post-installation hardware configuration duties. Journal Assignment From the man pages and online search, write down information, instructions, and options with respect to UNIX and LINUX for the following: TCP/IP Hardware (MAC) Addresses IPv4 and IPv6 Addressing Subnetting Subnet Mask CIDR ifconfig mount umount /dev/ USB Storage (ZIP and Memory Stick) PROCEDURE 1. Login with your general user account. In your home directory, make a directory named lab04 2. Logon as a superuser 3. Make a backup of the file /etc/hosts to /etc/hosts.orig Open /etc/hosts in vi Do not changing anything already in the file, but add the following after the last line: # Added on 2 January 2005 by Andrew H. Andersen oak.brookdalecc.net oak walnut.brookdalecc.net walnut apple.brookdalecc.net apple birch.brookdalecc.net birch chestnut.brookdalecc.net chestnut dogwood.brookdalecc.net dogwood elm.brookdalecc.net elm grapefruit.brookdalecc.net grapefruit hickory.brookdalecc.net hickory maple.brookdalecc.net maple orange.brookdalecc.net orange pine.brookdalecc.net pine redwood.brookdalecc.net redwood spruce.brookdalecc.net spruce Write and exit. Copy /etc/hosts to /home/username/lab04 4. When we installed Fedora, we assigned an IP address and subnet mask for eth0, the Ethernet adapter. Enter the command to check the current configuration for eth0. ifconfig eth0
NETW 110 Lab 4 Using eth0 Configuration Mounting Drives and Devices Page 2 In you journal, record the following information from the display: MAC Address (the hardware address of eth0. It is listed as HWaddr) IP Address Netmask Broadcast Address Interface Status (Up or Down) You can tell the interface is up since the word UP is at the beginning of line 3 of the output (before the word Broadcast) Type of broadcast We will now create a text file in the lab04 directory that redirects the output of the ifconfig command to a text file. We will now take down (turn off) eth0. Enter the command ifconfig eth0 down Enter the command to check the status (UP or DOWN) for eth0 and verify that the interface is DOWN. In you journal, record the interface status, and how you determined the status. Verify the interface is down by trying to ping any other computer on the network. In your journal, record the message on your display. Bring the interface back UP. Record the command to do this. Then verify that the interface is up and how you determined this with the ifconfig command and then the ping command to any other computer on the network. Send the output of the ping to a file named ping.txt as follows: ping c 6 oak > /home/andrewjr/lab04/ping.txt You can tell the interface is not up since the word UP is missing from the beginning of line 3 of the output (before the word Broadcast) We now wish to change IP Subnet mask and broadcast address for the adapter. Make sure that you are logged in with root privileges. From the CLI, enter the command for eth0 to: leave your IP address at xxx.3 change the subnet mask to change the broadcast address to Mounting USB Storage Devices (if available) Insert a USB ZIP drive into the port if one is available. You need to be logged in with superuser privileges. The USB port on your system must be version 1.1 or higher. Most devices will probably not work if your computers USB port is version 1.0 Enter the commands: modprobe ppa mkdir /mnt/zip Now enable the filesystem to associate a device with the hardware cd /etc vi fstab Press i ZIP drives use a SCSI drive number 4 or /sda4 In the next line, the device name after /mnt must be the same as the directory name that you created with mkdir in the /mnt directory. Since the
NETW 110 Lab 4 Using eth0 Configuration Mounting Drives and Devices Page 3 USB device will be used with both Linux and Windows, the file type in the following line is vfat. If you are only going to use Linux, you can make it ext2 or ext3. You can also use auto and let Linux make a guess. Auto is best if you will be moving files between a Windows PC and a Linux box. Open fstab in vi, move to the last line and enter the following: /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip auto user, ownernoauto 0 0 Make sure there is a blank line at the end of the file. Press ESC Press :wq Reboot When the system reboots, your system is now ready to read and write to the USB ZIP drive as soon as it is installed and mounted. Connecting to a ZIP drive in the USB port. To access the USB drive for the first time, you may have to enter two commands. modprobe ppa Now insert a ZIP disk into the drive and enter the command: mount /mnt/zip cd /mnt/zip You can now access the drive, open and save files, copy files, etc. To change a disk, enter the command: eject /mnt/zip To unmout the drive, enter the command umount /mnt/zip Connecting to an Internal ZIP drive. The following steps are required if the ZIP is not recognized whne a ZIP disk is inserted into the drive. To access an internal USB drive if one is available, you must enter two commands. If the ZIP weas installed when the OS was installed, there should be an entry in fstab. Depending on your distribution and system, it is mounted in one of two ways. If the first does not work try the second. Insert a ZIP disk into the drive and enter the command: mount /mnt/zip Execute the command ls l On some systems, you may have to identify a device and filesystem. To find out information on drives, enter the command cat /etc/fstab Look for the ZIP entry. On our computers, it is probably /dev/hdd4. If this is the case and you wish to use vfat, the mount command syntax is: mount /dev/hdd4 t vfat /mnt/zip One the ZIP drive is mounted, change to the ZIP drive with the command: cd /mnt/zip Before changing a disk, you should umount /mnt/zip, change to your home directory, change the disk, and mount it again. umount the ZIP Drive
NETW 110 Lab 4 Using eth0 Configuration Mounting Drives and Devices Page 4 IP Addressing In your journal, write the solution to the following IP Subnetting problems: 1. Given the IP network address , what subnet mask(s) will provide for a minimum of 100 subnets, each supporting at least 200 PC's? Using the subnet mask of your choice, what are the subnet addresses, the ranges of host addresses for each subnet, and the broadcast addresses of your subnets? 2. Comrade Network Engineer, of the Chernobyl nuclear-electric generating station has five nuclear reactors (that have not, as of yet, melted down). In each reactor, seventeen independently addressable Control Rod Drive Mechanisms move seventeen zirconium-clad hafnium control rods (one rod per CRDM), to control the reactor. Given that Chernobyl Power & Light has an assigned IP network address of , if each reactor needs its own subnet, and each CRDM requires its own IP host address, what subnet mask(s) will meet CP&L's requirements? Based on your recommendation for a subnet mask, what is the SCRAM (emergency shutdown) IP broadcast address for each reactor, comrade? 3. Exponential Growth, Inc., has an IP network address of /28, with 47 subnets. The maximum number of hosts they have on any one subnet is eleven. They plan to double the number of hosts per subnet by the year 2008, and they are worried about running out of IP addresses. They just called you in to analyze their IP network. Can you help them? 4. Given the following host addresses and subnet masks, find each subnet and its range of host addresses and write the subnet mask in dotted decimal notation: a /28 b /13 c /26 d /20 e /29 f /27 g /30 h /24 5. Given the following networks, numbers of subnets, and hosts per subnet, specify all possible subnet masks in both dotted-decimal and CIDR notation: Network Subnets Hosts/Subnet a b c d e f g h Final Steps Copy the following files to /home/username/lab04 /etc/hosts /etc/fstab /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
NETW 110 Lab 4 Using eth0 Configuration Mounting Drives and Devices Page 5 Change the ownership recursively for /home/username/lab04 and all its contents to your general username. Exit from su privileges. ftp to the class server Make a directory on the server named lab04 and upload all the files from /home/username/lab04
