Router Basic Commands & Configuration 4(b) Assign the IP address on the Serial interface of Router Console Cable R1 PC1 Objectives Be familiar with use of different Configuration Modes in Router Configure router's identification (name). Configure a message of the day (motd) banner. Use the Interface Config Mode to enter a description for an interface. Use the Interface Configuration Mode to configure interfaces. Configure IP address assignments for router interfaces. Configure subnet mask assignments for router interfaces. Copy the running configuration to the backup configuration. Background In this lab you will use the router's Global configuration mode and enter oneline commands that will be used for Router Level Configuration. The router's prompt in global configuration mode is "Router-name(config)#". Other configuration modes will be used for multiple command lines and detailed configurations as in configuration of interfaces. When working with the interfaces, the router prompt looks like "Router-name(config-if)#". You will also configure a message-of-the-day banner using the banner motd command in global configuration mode and enter descriptions for the interfaces on the router in interface configuration mode.

3 Configuration Step 1 Connect and Login to the router Connect to the router using console cable. Open Hyper Terminal, select the COM port in the CONNECT TO window, Click OK, Click on Restore Defaults on the COMx Properties (where x is your COM port number), Click on OK and hit enter twice. You shall get the router prompt or prompt for the password. Enter the password cisco if prompted. CCNA LAB MANUAL
4 Step 2-Enter privileged mode from user mode You shall have this prompt when you login to the router Router> Enter enable (abbreviated "en") at the command prompt. Enter the password of current mode. You will get the prompt with # sign and it is privileged exec mode Router Con0 is now available Press RETURN to get started! User Access Verification Password Router> Router>en Password Router# Explanation You use the enable command to enter privileged EXEC mode. Step 3 - Show the active configuration file Enter show running-config (abbreviated "sh runn") at the router prompt. Router#sh runn Building configuration... Current configuration 974 bytes end Router# Explanation The router will display information on how it is currently configured from the file which is loaded in RAM (Random Access Memory).
5 Step 4 - Show the backup configuration file Enter show startup-config (abbreviated "sh start") at the router prompt. Router#sh startup Using 974 out of bytes Router# Explanation The router will display information on the backup configuration file stored in NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM). Step 5 - Enter global configuration mode Enter configure terminal (abbreviated "config t") at the router prompt. Router#conf t Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z. Router(config)# Explanation To configure the router you must enter the global configuration mode. Notice how the router prompt has change after this command. Step 6 - Enter the help command Enter the help command by typing (?) at the router prompt. Explanation The router will respond with all commands available in global configuration mode. Router1(config)#? Configure commands aaa Authentication, Authorization and Accounting. xot Global XOT commands Router(config)#
6 Step 7 - Enter the help command for hostname Enter help command for hostname by entering hostname? at the router prompt. Router(config)#hostname? WORD This system's network name Router(config)#hostname Explanation You can get help with any command by entering the command followed by a space and a (?). Step 8 - Change the hostname of the router Enter hostname and your routers name at the router prompt. Router1(config)#hostname R1 R1(config)# Explanation This command will change the router hostname to your provided name. Step 9 - Enter a message of the day Enter banner motd then write your message starting and ending with hash sign(#). It will be your Message Of The Day at the router prompt. R1(config)#banner motd # This is test MOTD # R1(config)# Explanation This command will create a Message of the day banner that will display when someone logs into the router. Note that the message is bracketed by # which tells the router the start and stop of the message. Step 10 - Show information about the active configuration file Enter exit at the router prompt to go one level back, but to go back to privileged exec mode from any level press CTRL+Z Enter show running-config at the router prompt. R1(config)#exit R1#
7 %SYS-5-CONFIG_I Configured from console by console R1#sh runn Building configuration... R1# Explanation To check the running configuration you first have to exit out of global configuration mode using exit, then you will be at a privilege mode prompt and can issue the show running-config command. Note The configuration change you just made is in effect until the router is rebooted or reloaded. If you want router to save these changes to Startup-Config file, that router use to load configuration each time it starts, use this command Copy running Startup-config Step 11 - Enter global configuration mode Enter configure terminal at the router prompt. R1#conf t Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z. R1(config)# Explanation To configure the router you must enter the global configuration mode. Notice how the router prompt has change after this command. Step 12- Configure SSH Create a local user name R1(config)# username Ali password cisco Assign a domain name R1(config)# ip domain-name cisco.com This Command takes few a min to generate key R1(config)# crypto key generate rsa R1(config)# line vty 0 15 R1(config-line)# password cisco R1(config-line)# login local Configure vty ports for using SSH R1(config-line)# transport input telnet ssh
