Google Maps library requires v2.50 or above. Google Maps library allows you to add Google maps to your application. This library requires Android 3+ and will only work on devices with Google Play service. This tutorial will cover the configuration steps required for showing a map. The Maps APIs for Android have been updated in the latest release of the Google Play Services library and have been rolled out to Android devices with the Play Store. To test it out: Download Google Play services - From the IDE choose the Window Menu and then Android SDK Manager. Select Google Play services under the Extras node and install it: Create a new project 1. File -> New -> Android Application Project 2. You can leave all the options with their default values 3. Choose Blank Activity in the Create Activity screen 4. Ensure you have the latest version (v2) of the Google Play Services installed. Add the Google Play Services project into your Eclipse workspace. 1. Click File -> Import, select Android -> Existing Android Code into Workspace
2. Browse to and select <android-sdkfolder>/extras/google/google_play_services/libproject/googleplay-services_lib Add the dependency to Google Play Services into your project 1. Project -> Properties -> Android -> Library, Add -> google-playservices_lib
Update MainActivity.java to extend FragmentActivity instead of Activity Check that Google Play Services is available on the device at runtime to protect against error cases. Add the following line of code to the oncreate method. GooglePlayServicesUtil.isGooglePlayServicesAvailable(getApplicationCo ntext());
Update res/layout/activity_main.xml and replace the entire contents with the following source code: <fragment xmlns:android=" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" class="com.google.android.gms.maps.supportmapfragment" /> The map is controlled through the GoogleMap object, use findfragmentbyid to keep a reference to the GoogleMap from the layout. Add the following line of code to your oncreate method: GoogleMap map = ((SupportMapFragment) getsupportfragmentmanager().findfragmentbyid(r.id.map)).getmap() ; To use Google Maps API you need an API Key: 1. Go to (you may need to log into your Google account) 2. Click on Create Project if you see the option to start using the Google APIs console as follows:
3. In Services enable Google Maps Android API v2 and agree to the terms: 4. In the left navigation bar, click API Access. 5. Click Create New Android Key 6. Generate your SHA1 of your debug certificate use keytool: keytool -list -alias androiddebugkey -keystore ~/.android/debug.keystore -storepass android -keypass android v
Note: For Windows computers the.android directory is in your user directory 7. In the resulting dialog, enter the SHA-1 fingerprint, then a semicolon then your application's package name. For example: A2:1E:8D:98:38:5F:86:01:A2:F3:6B:2F:97:22:8E:C0:79:AC:38:23 ;edu.itu.map2demo After pressing Create you will see it added as follows:
If you have debug and production keys then add both in. 8. Your new API key will be a 40 character string like: AIzaSyAeDb8CEGBzhv_8Ap9VCjrh4Y6fUtZ0-Nw 9. Add the following tag into your AndroidManifest.xml just before the closing </application> tag <meta-data android:name="com.google.android.maps.v2.api_key" android:value="your_api_key"/> 10. Your application now also needs the following permissions in the AndroidManifest.xml <permission android:name="your_package_name.permission.maps_receive" android:protectionlevel="signature"/> android:name="your_package_name.permission.maps_receive"/>
android:name="android.permission.internet"/> android:name="android.permission.write_external_storage"/> android:name="com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.read_gservices" /> 11. Optionally you can include one or both of these permissions to enable auto-location android:name="android.permission.access_coarse_location"/> android:name="android.permission.access_fine_location"/> 10. Maps v2 uses OpenGL so the following uses-feature is also required <uses-feature android:glesversion="0x " android:required="true"/> Test your application and check the logcat output for any errors. If it is working try out some of the other GoogleMap options: mmap.setmaptype(googlemap.map_type_satellite); mmap.addmarker(new MarkerOptions().position(new LatLng(0, 0)).title("Marker")); mmap.setmylocationenabled(true); more details at ws Attribution Requirements: If you use the Google Maps Android API in your application, you must include the Google Play Services attribution text as part of a "Legal Notices" section in your application. Including legal notices as an independent menu item, or as part of an "About" menu item, is recommended. The attribution text is available by making a call to GooglePlayServicesUtil.getOpenSourceSoftwareLicenseInfo.
Upon testing you might get the following screen: If so you are NOT using the right type of Emulator. Test using a Google API emulator (3.0 or above), not the standard android one.
