Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu This chapter describes how to use the File menu in VirtualViewer Java. The chapter contains the following topics: Using the New Document Menu Using the Reload Document Menu Using the Print Menu Saving Documents Using the Info Menu to View Image Properties Inserting a Page from a Scanner Using the Next Page Menu Using the Previous Page Menu Using Mouse Wheel Scrolling Using the Close Document Menu Using the Reload Applet Menu Using the Exit Menu Using the Recent Document Menu Using the New Document Menu When using VirtualViewer Java in floating tabs mode, select File > New Document from the main menu to create a new tab in the Image Panel with an empty document called <Empty Document>. When using the applet in embedded mode, select File > New Document from the main menu to call an external JavaScript method. The JavaScript method can then be used to open a new browser window with another embedded applet containing an empty document. Configuring VirtualViewer Java with the New Document Menu To add New Documents to the File menu, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags Example 1.1: hasnewdocument Parameter <param name="hasnewdocument" value="true"> 13

Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu To add New Documents to the File menu to call an external JavaScript method, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags: Example 1.2: javascriptnewdocumentfunction Parameter <param name="javascriptnewdocumentfunction" value="empty Document"> Using the Reload Document Menu You can reload the document to view it as it was before you modified it. To reload the document, select File > Reload Document from the main menu. VirtualViewer Java reloads in the current window. Most viewers are configured to load pages at a relatively low resolution to speed up performance. However if you want to look at a more detailed version of the page, you can request High Quality Reload of the document to get better definition if it is available in the document. Using the Print Menu You can print to any resolution supported by your printer. Printing is compatible with any industrial or commercial printer that is supported by your operating system. Note: If you are experiencing problems trying to print, check that you have the latest printer driver installed. Printing Images To print images, do the following: From the menu, select File > Print to display the Print dialog box. VirtualViewer Java Print Dialog Box 1. In the Name field, select the printer where you want the document to print. 2. In the Page Range field, select All, Pages, or Selection. 3. 15 Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu Print Quality Preference You can set the Print Quality by selecting Preferences > Printing. On the Printing Preference screen, select Best (300 DPI), Better (250 DPI), Good (200 DPI) or Fair (150 DPI). Printing Multiple Documents In multiple document mode, you can select to print non-consecutive documents. The documents available to print will be displayed in a list box of the Print dialog box. For more information on setting multiple documents mode, see Multiple Documents Mode. Note: Please note that printing in multiple documents mode is not supported in the stand alone VirtualViewer Java applet. Configuring VirtualViewer Java with the Print Menu To show the print dialog box that allows you to print annotations and set the print quality, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code and set the value to true, between the <applet> and </applet> tags: Example 1.3: showsnowboundprintdialog Parameter <param name="showsnowboundprintdialog" value="true"> Printing Annotations by Default To select the Print Annotations check box in the Print dialog box by default, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code and set the value to true, between the <applet> and </applet> tags: Example 1.4: printannotationsboxchecked Parameter <param name="printannotationsboxchecked" value="true"> Configuring Print Auditing When the File > Print command is invoked, an external JavaScript function may be called if it is defined by your system administrator between the <applet> and </applet> tags in the following parameter: Example 1.5: javascriptprintauditfunction Parameter 15

Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu <param name="javascriptprintauditfunction" value="nameoffunction"> Configuring Printing Multiple Documents To print multiple documents from the Print Dialog box, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags: Example 1.6: printmultipledocuments Parameter <param name="printmultipledocuments" value="true" Note: Please note that printing in multiple documents mode is not supported in the stand alone VirtualViewer Java applet. Printing Large Documents Printing large documents, such as documents approaching or exceeding 100 pages, or documents set to a resolution of 300 DPI or above, requires additional memory resources. These additional resource requirements can affect the performance of both servers and clients. Servers Depending on the current Java Virtual Machine memory configuration for the Imaging server, the need for additional resources may cause an out of memory error. Increasing the Java Virtual Machine maximum heap size to the Imaging server during start up can help avoid memory errors. Specify the minimum and maximum heap size by passing the parameter -Xms and -Xmx to the Imaging server during start up, where the amount of memory is in megabytes or gigabytes you want to allocate to the Imaging server. Clients Each of the different browsers handles the increased resource demands uniquely. In some cases, when printing documents that require additional resources, the document may print with blank pages, fail to respond, or require the browser or computer to be restarted. Solution A workaround for this problem may be to download the document locally and then print it. If the document does not have any annotations or the document is to be printed without annotations, the original document can be downloaded and printed. However, if a document is to be printed with annotations, a TIFF version of the document can be downloaded and printed. 16

Chapter 1 - Using the File Menu Saving Documents Using the Save As Menu To save the document that is open in the current window, select File > Save as from the main menu. The stamp is constructed according to the following comma separated values: Menu Text Stamp Text Font name Font style (plain or bold) Font size Foreground Color Background Color Note: The background color is ignored. Configuring Image Rubber Stamps Image rubber stamps can be defined by your system administrator for VirtualViewer Java. To configure image rubber stamps, define one or more stamps that you would like to have available. You can define a rubber stamp with an applet tag as follows: Example 4.21: Defined Rubber Stamps <param name="snowboundstamp" value="snowbound, top.gif"> <param name="buildingstamp" value="building, The value field contains the following two comma separated values: 57

Chapter 4 - Using the Annotations Menu The text of the menu item The URL containing the image for the stamp The defined stamps must be included in the customstamp tag to be displayed in the Annotations > Image Rubber Stamp menu. For example: Example 4.22: customimagerubberstamps Parameter <param name="customimagerubberstamps" value="snowboundstamp, buildingstamp"> This parameter will look for the stamps defined and add them to the menu as in the following example: Annotations > Image Rubber Stamp > snowboundstamp Annotations > Image Rubber Stamp > buildingstamp Please see the next topic Chapter 5, Using the Preferences Menu. 58

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu This chapter describes how to use the Preferences menu in VirtualViewer Java. The chapter contains the following topics: Using the Ruler Menu Turning Anti-aliasing On Turning Anti-aliasing Off Using the Options Menu - Setting User Preferences High Quality Reload Using the Ruler Menu You can enable the ruler to keep track of where you are in an image. The ruler helps you to line up an exact position in an image. You can use the horizontal and vertical rulers simultaneously. The horizontal and vertical rulers can also be selected separately to allow you to view one or both. Once the rulers are visible, they can be added, moved, and also removed. When the rulers have been added to an image, VirtualViewer Java will look like the following: Horizontal and Vertical Ruler 59

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Adding or Moving a Horizontal Ruler 1. From the menu, select Preferences > Ruler > Add/Move > Horizontal from the main menu. 2. Drag your left mouse key over the image. 3. Let go of the mouse key when positioned in the proper location. Adding or Moving a Vertical Ruler To add a vertical ruler, do the following: 1. From the menu, select Preferences > Ruler > Add/Move > Vertical from the main menu. 2. Drag your left mouse key over the image. 3. Let go of the mouse key when positioned in the proper location. Adding or Moving Both Rulers To view both the vertical and horizontal rulers, do the following: 1. From the menu, select Preferences > Ruler > Add/Move > Both from the main menu. 2. Drag your left mouse key over the image. 3. Let go of the mouse key when positioned in the proper location. Removing the Vertical, Horizontal, or Both Rulers 1. To remove the horizontal ruler, select Preferences > Ruler > Remove > Horizontal from the main menu. 2. To remove the vertical ruler, select Preferences > Ruler > Remove > Vertical from the main menu. 3. To remove both rulers, select Preferences > Ruler > Remove > Both from the main menu. Configuring Persistent Ruler The Persistent Ruler function allows rulers to remain in the image panel from page to page while viewing a document until they are removed. To configure the Persistent Ruler function, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your applet.html code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags. If true, rulers will remain in the Image panel from page to page while viewing a document until removed. The default value is false. 60

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Example 5.1: persistentrulers Parameter <param name="persistentrulers" value="true"> Turning Anti-aliasing On You can increase or decrease the visible jagged edges of images. Anti-aliasing is a software technique used to diminish step-like lines that should be smooth. Anti-aliasing surrounds stair steps with intermediate shades of gray or gray scaling for 1-bit images, or color for color images. This process is a useful way to fill in text. Note: Even though anti-aliasing may make images less clear, it reduces the jagged appearance of lines. You can alias images by using the Anti-alias tool. To turn aliasing on, select Preferences > Anti Alias > On from the main menu. Example of an Aliased and Anti-aliased Image Turning Anti-aliasing Off You can increase or decrease the visible jagged edges of images. Aliasing is a process by which smooth curves and other lines become jagged. This can happen if the resolution of the graphic file is not high enough to represent a smooth curve. You can alias images by using the Anti-alias Off tool. To turn aliasing off, select Preferences > Anti Alias > Off from the main menu. 61

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Using the Options Menu - Setting User Preferences VirtualViewer Java provides a way for user preferences to be maintained and saved for subsequent sessions. Preferences are passed to the server in an XML format via the content handler interface. Selecting a lower DPI (dots per inch) will speed up printing. Selecting a higher DPI will increase the quality of the printed page. Most preferences are entered by selecting Preferences > Options from the main menu to open the Options Tab. The only preferences that are not set in the Options panel are the toolbar location preferences. The toolbar location preferences are set by simply dragging the toolbars to the desired location in the VirtualViewer Java window. VirtualViewer Java Options Tree Setting the Options Tree The Options Tab features a left-panel tree that allows you to select which type of options you would like to set. The Options tab contains the following set of categories: 62

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Printing Rubber Stamps Annotations Zoom Toolbar Selecting an item from the Options Tree will open the appropriate options for that category. Selecting the Options Buttons The four buttons at the bottom of the Options panel do the following: Save: Sends the current preferences to the server for saving. Restore Defaults: Clears out the preferences for the active Options tab and reverts to the preferences set by the system administrator in the applet tags. Restore Saved Preferences: Restores the preferences back to the state of the most recent save. Return to Image: Returns to the image that was viewed before you selected Options. Selecting Printing Preferences From the main menu, select Preferences > Options from the main menu and then Printing from the Options tab to display the Printing Preferences panel. From the Printing Preferences panel, you can select your preferred print quality: Best, Better, Good, or Fair. The Printing Preferences Panel Selecting Rubber Stamp Preferences From the main menu, select Preferences > Options and then Rubber Stamps from the Options tab to display the Rubber Stamp Preferences panel. The Rubber Stamp Preference panel allows you to add and maintain custom rubber stamp annotations. 63

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu To add a Rubber Stamp, click New Stamp, and fill out the fields for the stamp. The system displays a preview of the stamp at the bottom of the panel. When the fields are filled out, click the Apply button to apply the properties of the stamp. Note: Rubber stamps that are configured by the system administrator cannot be modified in the Rubber Stamps Preferences panel.. The Rubber Stamp Preferences Panel Selecting Annotation Preferences From the main menu, select Preferences > Options and Annotations from the Options Tree tab to display the Annotations Preferences panel. The Annotations Preferences panel allows you to set preferred foreground and background color, font (if applicable), and line weight options for each annotation type (For example, rectangle, filled rectangle, etc). The preview panel shows how an example annotation might look under the current configuration. 64

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu The Annotation Preferences Panel Selecting Zoom Preferences From the main menu, select Preferences > Options and Zoom from the Options tab to display the Zoom Preferences panel. The Zoom Preferences panel allows you to specify your preferred fit of an image when a page is first loaded into VirtualViewer Java. You can also specify the position of a page to be either Center or Top Left when a page is configured to be zoomed-in. 65

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu The Zoom Preferences Panel Selecting Standard Toolbar Preferences From the main menu, select Preferences > Options and Toolbars from the Options Tree to display the Standard Toolbar Preferences panel. The Standard Toolbar Preferences panel allows you to configure the order and number of buttons on the standard toolbar. From the Standard Toolbar screen, you can add a button corresponding to any of the menu items available in the main VirtualViewer Java menu. The toolbar is modified in real time as you make modifications in this panel. The list in the left panel shows the buttons that have already been added to the toolbar. These items can be dragged within the list to reorder the buttons. They can also be checked or unchecked to be displayed or hidden. Other available items corresponding to each of the menus can be added on the Available Buttons panel shown on the right. Double clicking an item in this tree will add the selected item to the toolbar. 66

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu The Standard Toolbar Preferences Panel User Placement of Thumbnails and Toolbars You can select the placement of the standard toolbar, the annotation toolbar, the thumbnails panel, and the status bar by dragging and dropping. At any time during the application, you can click on the drag handle of these panels and drag the panel to the desired location on the top, bottom, left or right border of the window. The Thumbnail Panel can only be placed on the left or right border of the window, and the status bar can only be placed at the top or bottom of the window. The other toolbars can be placed at any border. The placement of the panels is sent in the preferences data that is stored and retrieved from the server. Subsequent launches of the applications will place the toolbars in the user s preferred location. Configuring When Preferences Are Sent to the Server To set when Preferences are sent to the server, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your HTML code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags. 67

Chapter 5 - Using the Preferences Menu Example 5.2: preferencespersisted Parameter <param name="preferencespersisted" value="exit"> Valid values to set the preferencespersisted parameter are preferencessavebutton, exit, and buttonandexit. Configuring When Changes to Preferences Take Effect To set when Preferences take effect in the application, your system administrator needs to insert the following parameter into your HTML code, between the <applet> and </applet> tags. Example 5.3: preferencestakeeffect Parameter <param name="preferencestakeeffect" value="immediate"> Valid values to set the preferencestakeeffect parameter are preferencessavebutton, exit, and immediate. High Quality Reload The High Quality Reload feature enables you to request a high resolution version of a textbased document, such as PDF, Word, etc. This feature is useful when the server is configured to serve documents in black and white or relatively low resolution. When you are viewing a document in the server s default resolution, you can press CTRL-R to request a high-resolution version of your document. For example, the server is configured to deliver a PDF in 1-bit color (black and white) and 150 dots per inch (DPI). You view a PDF and receive an image. After selecting CTRL-R, you view the same page in 24-bit color and 300 DPI. The DPI and color depth of the high quality reload are defined in the highqualitybitdepth and highquailtydpi parameters: Example 5.4: highqualitybitdepth and highqualitydpi Parameters <param name="highqualitybitdepth" value="24"> <param name="highqualitydpi" value="300"> Please see the next topic Chapter 6, Using the Page Manipulation Menu. 68
