Software testing A.A. 2018/2019

Testing Testing is intended to show that a program does what it is intended to do and to discover program defects before it is put into use. When you test software, you execute a program using artificial data. You check the results of the test run for errors, anomalies, or information about the program s non-functional attributes.

Validation Vs. defect testing - Validation testing: to demonstrate to the developer and the customer that the software meets its requirements. There should be at least one test for every requirement in the requirements document - Defect testing: to discover situations in which the behavior of the software is incorrect, undesirable, or does not conform to its specification.

Is testing trustworthy? Testing can only show the presence of errors, not their absence (Dijkstra et al., 1972) Testing cannot demonstrate that the software is free of defects or that it will behave as specified in every circumstance. It is always possible that a test that you have overlooked could discover further problems with the system.

Testing as part of software verification and validation Testing is part of a broader process of software verification and validation. Verification and validation are not the same thing, although they are often confused. - Validation: Are we building the right product? - Verification: Are we building the product right?

Prototypical software testing stages 1. Development testing, where the system is tested during development to discover bugs and defects. System designers and programmers are likely to be involved in the testing process. 2. Release testing, where a separate testing team tests a complete version of the system before it is released to users. The aim of release testing is to check that the system meets the requirements of system stakeholders. 3. User testing, where users or potential users of a system test the system in their own environment. For software products, the user may be an internal marketing group who decide if the software can be marketed, released, and sold. Acceptance testing is one type of user testing where the customer formally tests a system to decide if it should be accepted from the system supplier or if further development is required.

Development testing types - Unit testing, where individual program units or object classes are tested. Unit testing should focus on testing the functionality of objects or methods. - Component testing, where several individual units are integrated to create composite components. Component testing should focus on testing component interfaces. - System testing, where some or all of the components in a system are integrated and the system is tested as a whole. System testing should focus on testing component interactions.

Unit testing Unit testing is the process of testing program components, such as methods or object classes. Individual functions or methods are the simplest type of component. Your tests should be calls to these routines with different input parameters. When you are testing object classes, you should design your tests to provide coverage of all of the features of the object, i.e. : - test all operations associated with the object; - set and check the value of all attributes associated with the object; - put the object into all possible states. This means that you should simulate all events that cause a state change.

Example You need to define test cases for all of the methods associated with the class StringMethods such as touppercase, tolowercase, split, reverse, equalignorcase. Ideally, you should test methods in isolation but, in some cases, some test sequences are necessary. For example, to test the method equalignorecase you need to have executed tolowercase.

Unit testing in Python PyUnit is an easy way to create unit testing programs and UnitTests with Python. Note that docs.python.org uses the name "unittest", which is also the module name. unittest supports test automation, sharing of setup and shutdown code for tests, aggregation of tests into collections, and independence of the tests from the reporting framework. The unittest module provides classes that make it easy to support these qualities for a set of tests.

unittest core concepts: Test fixture: represents the preparation needed to perform one or more tests, and any associate cleanup actions. This may involve, for example, creating temporary or proxy databases, directories, or starting a server process. Test case: is the smallest unit of testing. It checks for a specific response to a particular set of inputs. unittest provides a base class, TestCase, which may be used to create new test cases. Test suite: is a collection of test cases, test suites, or both. It is used to aggregate tests that should be executed together. Test runner: is a component which orchestrates the execution of tests and provides the outcome to the user.

Text fixtures and test cases The test case and test fixture concepts are supported through the TestCase and FunctionTestCase classes The former should be used when creating new tests, and the latter can be used when integrating existing test code with a unittest-driven framework. When building test fixtures using TestCase, the setup() and teardown() methods can be overridden to provide initialization and cleanup for the fixture.

Example: Python code for the StringMethods class

Example: Test fixtures and test cases

Example: StringManipulationTestCase

Example: StringEqualityTestCase

Test loaders, suites, and runners The TestLoader class is used to create test suites from classes and modules. Normally, there is no need to create an instance of this class; the unittest module provides an instance that can be shared as unittest.defaulttestloader. Using a subclass or instance, however, allows customization of some configurable properties. Test suites are implemented by the TestSuite class. This class allows individual tests and test suites to be aggregated; when the suite is executed, all tests added directly to the suite and in child test suites are run. A test runner is an object that provides a single method, run(), which accepts a TestCase or TestSuite object as a parameter, and returns a result object. The class TestResult is provided for use as the result object.

Example: test loaders, suites, and runners
