Java in MapReduce Kevin Swingler Scope A specific look at the Java code you might use for performing MapReduce in Hadoop Java program recap The map method The reduce method The whole program Running on the cluster 1
Running MapReduce on Hadoop Here is the scenario we are covering today: Data is stored in HDFS on a Hadoopcluster It doesn't matter how many nodes there are or how the data is split We want to write a program to process all of the data in a file, which is spread across the cluster Try to minimise the movement of data: code goes to data We will write map and reduce functions in Java Java and MapReduce To run a MapReducejob on a Hadoopcluster, you do the following: Design the Map Reduce job: what data is read and what is calculated? Write a map function and a reduce function to perform the job Wrap those functions in a short program Create a jar file with the code in it, submit it to Hadoop 2
apache.hadoop API There is a set of classes in the hadoopapi, which we will make use of to run the MapReduce jobs We will only scratch their surface here They make the passing of results between map and reduce easy I'll highlight them in red Flow of Data -Text File Sum data associated with each key (x,y shown) Text File x,2,3 y,5,6 :,:,: 0:x,2,3 Map emit (key, sum) x:5 Reduce emit (key, sum) X:47 Y:53 Result File x,47 y,53 :,:,: Data is sent from the file to the Map function a line at a time The Map function emits the result of a calculation as a key value pair Reduce performs a calculation on the data in each 'group' defined by the key output from Map 3
Map Function The map function has three parameters: key = Offset in bytes within the file value = Text row read from file context= hadoopcontext to write results to It doesn't return anything, but writes a (key, value) pair to the context Its job is to extract the required data and the key that the reducer will use to group the data Reduce Function The reduce function has three parameters: The key associated with this group of data (as produced by Map) A list of values associated with that key context It generally leaves the key untouched and performs a calculation on the list of values (aggregates them) It writes to the contextthe key and aggregated value 4
Example: Sum Scores Red 10 Blue 5 Red 23 Green 3 Red 78 Blue 2 Mapper Class public static class MyMapper extends Mapper<Object, Text, Text, IntWritable> private IntWritable num = new IntWritable(); private Text word = new Text(); public void map(object key, Text value, Context context) StringTokenizer itr = new StringTokenizer(value.toString()); word.set(itr.nexttoken()); num.set(integer.parseint(itr.nexttoken())); context.write(word, num); Creates a new mapper class, which extends the hadoop class Mapper<KEYIN,VALUEIN,KEYOUT,VALUEOUT> The class names between < and > define the classes used for passing keys and values in and out. (Some code is removed for clarity -don't use in practice) 5
Mapper Class public static class MyMapper extends Mapper<Object, Text, Text, IntWritable> private IntWritable num = new IntWritable(); private Text word = new Text(); public void map(object key, Text value, Context context) StringTokenizer itr = new StringTokenizer(value.toString()); word.set(itr.nexttoken()); num.set(integer.parseint(itr.nexttoken())); context.write(word, num); Red 10 Red 10 Blue 5 Red 23 Green 3 Red 78 Blue 2 Reducer Class public static class MyReducer extends Reducer<Text,IntWritable,Text,IntWritable> private IntWritable result = new IntWritable(); public void reduce(text key, Iterable<IntWritable> values, Context context) int sum = 0; for (IntWritable val : values) sum += val.get(); result.set(sum); context.write(key, result); Creates a new reduce class, which extends the hadoop class Reducer<KEYIN,VALUEIN,KEYOUT,VALUEOUT> The class names between < and > define the classes used for passing keys and values in and out. (Some code is removed for clarity -don't use in practice) 6
Reducer Class public static class MyReducer extends Reducer<Text,IntWritable,Text,IntWritable> private IntWritable result = new IntWritable(); public void reduce(text key, Iterable<IntWritable> values, Context context) int sum = 0; for (IntWritable val : values) sum += val.get(); result.set(sum); context.write(key, result); Red 111 Red 10 Blue 5 Red 23 Green 3 Red 78 Blue 2 The Rest of the Program public class xysum public static void main(string[] args) throws Exception Configuration conf = new Configuration(); Job job = Job.getInstance(conf, "Job name"); job.setjarbyclass(.class); job.setmapperclass(mymapper.class); job.setcombinerclass(myreducer.class); job.setreducerclass(myreducer.class); job.setoutputkeyclass(text.class); job.setoutputvalueclass(intwritable.class); FileInputFormat.addInputPath(job, new Path(args[0])); FileOutputFormat.setOutputPath(job, new Path(args[1])); System.exit(job.waitForCompletion(true)? 0 : 1); 7
The Combiner We have ignored the combiner so far Its job is to attempt to reduce the amount of data that flows from map to reduce by running a reduction step on each map node In our example (as is common) the combiner function is the same as the reducer function Running the Job 1. Connect to the Hadoopserver via SSH 2. Make sure the files you want to process are in HDFS 3. Copy your java files to the Hadoopserver 4. Compile your java files 5. Make a jar file from your java class files 6. Run Hadoop, passing in your jar file name 7. View the jobs via the web browser 8. Access the results files from HDFS 8
Some Other Points Note the use of IntWritable and Text These are classes that allow easy serialization (writing to the context between map and reduce) Others include LongWritable, FloatWritable, ArrayWritable You can write your own too, by implementing the Writable interface 9
