Understanding Business Process Services Chapter 1 The Documentum platform enables you to automate business processes, such as an insurance claims process or an engineering development process. Most business processes involve routing one or more documents through a series of activities, such as reviewing a document, checking it into the repository, or approving it. In many processes, one or more of the activities is performed by people or applications outside of the organization. For example, a contract negotiation process might entail sending drafts and proposals back and forth between the two parties. Business Process Services (BPS) enables you to exchange documents and information with people outside the organization, thereby extending automated business processes to include external participants. Note: Business Process Services derives its name from the fact that its services are designed to support business process automation through integration. However, you can use Business Process Services to send and receive documents independently of Documentum business processes. Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 9

Preparing for Business Process Services Installation Chapter 2 This chapter contains instructions for preparing host machines to install and configure the legacy Business Process Services (BPS) functionality included in Process Integrator in the Documentum 6.5 environment. You must run the BPS installer to migrate from BPS to Documentum 6.5 to continue working with the legacy BPS functionality in the Documentum 6.5 environment. Supporting software requirements Business Process Services is a client application that runs on the user s local Microsoft Windows computer and connects to Content Server using Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC). The various components of the legacy Business Process Services functionality included in Process Integrator, depend on additional supporting software, which must be installed in order for the application to work properly. The following requirements are valid for using existing custom inbound activity templates and installing and manually configuring inbound services and listeners: All machines on which any Business Process Services component is installed require Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC). The Business Process Services installation program installs DFC automatically. Machines on which you install the HTTP listener, JMS listener, or message processors must have a supported application server or servlet container. Refer to the Release Notes for a list of supported application servers. Machines on which you run message handlers typically need access to at least one Documentum Content Server, version 6.5, and Documentum repository. Most handlers interact with Content Server. Message handlers run on the same machine as the message processor that passes messages to them. If you plan to install multiple instances of the SMTP listener on the same application server host, you must allocate individual ports on which each instance listens. Refer to the documentation for Apache JAMES for information on how to do this. Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 11
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation Business Process Services requires a properly configured TCP/IP network with sufficient capacity to support Content Server and client applications. The network must be configured to allow communications between hosts that exchange information. For example, if HTTP listener outside the firewall must communicate with a remote message processor inside the firewall, the network must allow this. It is typical to use HTTPS for such communications, but this is not a requirement. Preparing a UNIX host If you install the legacy Business Process Services functionality included in Process Integrator on a host machine that has other Documentum software installed on it already, Business Process Services uses the basic information from the existing installation. For example, it uses the existing dmcl.ini file, if one exists, to locate a DocBroker. This section describes preliminary tasks that you must complete before installing Business Process Services on a UNIX machine with no previously installed Documentum software. Installation directories On UNIX, the following directories must be created before installing and must be properly referenced by the environment variables described in Setting environment variables, page 12: The DFC program root directory is the directory designated by the $DOCUMENTUM_SHARED environment variable. The DOCUMENTUM environment variable is used by the installer to create the DFC user directory. For information on how these directories are used by DFC, see the Documentum Foundation Classes Installation Guide. Setting environment variables On UNIX hosts, the DFC program root and other path names are designated in environment variables that you set up before installation. For information on how these variables are used by DFC, see the Documentum Foundation Classes Installation Guide. Set these variables in the.cshrc (C shell) or.profile file (Bourne or Korn shells) of the installation owner. Alternatively, set the variables in a file called by the.cshrc file or.profile file or in other fashions permitted by UNIX. 12 Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation Table 1. Required Environment Variables Environment Variable Description Required Values DOCUMENTUM DOCUMENTUM_ SHARED The full path of the DFC user root (and Content Server root, if it is installed on the application server host). The full path to the DFC program root. Any directory in the installation owner s environment Any directory in the installation owner s environment Installation owner user account The user account that you use to log in before installing Business Process Services becomes the installation owner for Business Process Services. The installation owner s user name must consist of letters, numbers, dashes ( ) and underscores (_). The first character must be a letter. All characters must be ASCII characters. The installation owner s password must consist of letters, numbers, dashes, underscores, and periods. Restricted characters Do not use the following characters in path names accessed by Documentum product installers:! \ / : *? ʺ < > Do not use spaces in the name of the Documentum installation directory. For example, do not use c:\documentum Products\ or /Documentum Products as the name of the installation directory. Configuration names During installation, you are asked to provide a configuration name and, depending on the application server or servlet container, a virtual directory or application name. The configuration name is used in naming the XML configuration file for the installation. You can provide any arbitrary name as long as it is unique. By providing different Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 13
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation configuration names, you can install multiple instances of the listeners on a host. If you reinstall the software and use the name previously given to a configuration, the installer overwrites the existing configuration file. The virtual directory or application name you provide is used in the URL for addressing the inbound HTTP listener and the remote message processor. On Tomcat, the format for HTTP listener is: On Tomcat, the format for the remote message processor is: On WebLogic, the format for the HTTP listener is: On WebLogic, the format for the remote message processor is: On WebSphere, the format for the HTTP listener is: On WebSphere, the format for the remote message processor is: Upgrading from Inter Enterprise Workflow Services Inter Enterprise Workflow Services (IWS) is a Documentum product that provides a limited subset of the services provided by Business Process Services. There is no upgrade path from IWS to Business Process Services. If you have IWS installed, document any workflows or customizations you have created in which IWS participates. You can then recreate the customization and workflow functionality under Business Process Services. For information on customizing and programming with Business Process Services, refer to the Documentum Business Process Services Development Guide. Planning for global registries A global registry is a central repository used to make certain types of objects available to DFC instances throughout a Documentum installation. The global registry serves two purposes: 14 Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation Deploying service based business objects (SBOs) SBOs associate service names (BOF interface names) with implementation classes that extend the DfService class and implement IDfService. SBOs are required by some out of the box Documentum applications and may be required by your custom applications. For detailed information about SBOs, see the Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC) Development Guide. Storing network location objects Network location objects define a Web client user s location on a network. Network locations are used by Content Server to determine from which storage area content files are served to an end user. Implementing a global registry for your installation means that: A repository is designated as the global registry when it is installed or upgraded. DFC installations on client hosts are configured so that DFC can connect to the global registry repository. DFC instances on Content Server hosts must also be configured to contact the designated global registry repository. All DFC and BOF based clients on a particular host use the same global registry repository. The repository designated as a global registry must project to the connection brokers known to the DFC instances that connect to the global registry. The dmcl.ini file on a DFC host must contain an entry for the connection broker to which the global registry repository projects. Do you need a global registry in your system? When a global registry is enabled, you can deploy service based objects automatically from the central repository designated as the global registry, and network locations created in the global registry are available in distributed configurations. Enable the global registry during repository configuration if you intend to deploy SBOs from that repository or if you intend to use network location objects. There is no limit to how many repositories may be configured as global registries; however, it is recommended that you have only one global registry in your production environment. To set up a global registry: 1. Determine the repository that will function as the global registry. It is strongly recommended that you have only one global registry in your production environment. However, you may need more than one global registry if you have applications that have very different user access levels. For example, you might have a customized client application that uses a particular set of SBOs where only a limited group of users have access to the application. In this case, you may want to set up a Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 15
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation global registry for that application and application server. A second global registry can then be used for a Webtop application that serves the general population of users. 2. When the selected repository is created or upgraded, designate it as a global registry. 3. During repository configuration, provide the user login name and password for the global registry user. The user exists in all repositories, but in the Inactive state and without a user login name or password. This is the user that DFC client instances will use for repository access. If you designated a repository as a global registry, the installer prompts you to enter a user login name and password for this user. The user is created in the Active state, with repository access limited to Read permission in the /System/Modules folder. This makes the business object framework services in the /System/Modules folder accessible to the user. 4. When you install DFC on client machines, provide those DFC installations with the global user login credentials. This applies to Desktop installations on end user computers, to WDK based clients such as Webtop on application server host, and to the DFC instance on Content Server and remote Content Server hosts. 5. Ensure that the global registry repository projects to connection brokers known to the DFC instances that must access the global registry. The dmcl.ini file on a DFC host must contain an entry for the connection broker to which the global registry repository projects. Setting up a repository as a global registry During repository configuration, you are asked whether to designate the repository as a global registry and the global registry user is created in the repository. The global registry user, who has the user name of dm_bof_registry, is the repository user whose account is used by DFC clients to connect to the repository to access required service based objects stored in a global registry in the repository. This user has Read access to objects in the /System/Modules only, and no other objects. This user is created in all repositories, regardless of whether the repository is configured as a global registry: If you configure the repository as a global registry, you provide the user login name and password for the user and the user state is set to Active. This can be any arbitrary user login name and password. You must then provide the user login name and password to DFC clients during DFC installation on client hosts. Do not use the repository owner s credentials or the installation owner s credentials. 16 Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide
Preparing for Business Process Services Installation If you do not configure the repository as a global registry, the user is created with default values for the user login name and password and the user state is set to Inactive. If you later enable the repository as a global registry, use Documentum Administrator to change the user state to Active and provide the user with a user login name and password that you choose. Refer to the Documentum Content Server Installation Guide for instruction on enabling a repository as a global registry during repository configuration. Accessing the global registry The identity of the global registry, if any, is a property of the DFC installation. Different DFC installations can use different global registries, but a single DFC installation can have only one global registry. The dfc.properties file contains the following properties relating to accessing the global registry: dfc.globalregistry.username=dm_bof_registry The name of the repository. The repository must project to a connection broker that DFC has access to. dfc.globalregistry.repository=<repository> The user name part of the credentials that DFC uses to access the global registry. dfc.globalregistry.password=<password> The password part of the credentials that DFC uses to access the global registry. The DFC installer encrypts the password if you supply it. If you wish to encrypt the password yourself, use the following instruction at a command prompt: java com.documentum.fc.tools.registrypasswordutils password In addition to efficiency, local caching provides backup if the global registry repository is unavailable. By default, DFC preloads all SBO implementation classes from the global registry to the local cache. That is, DFC downloads these classes, regardless of whether or not any application has tried to instantiate them. DFC does this only once. Thereafter, it downloads an implementation only if it changes presumably an infrequent event. Restarting DFC does not cause it to lose the contents of its local cache. This provides Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 17

Chapter 3 Installing and Manually Configuring Inbound Services and Listeners This chapter contains instructions for installing all software components of Business Process Services to continue working with the legacy BPS functionality in the Documentum 6.5 environment. Additionally, if you want to create custom listeners, you will need to follow these installation instructions. A single installer handles installation of all legacy Business Process Services components. You select the components to install on a particular host, and the components are installed. In addition, the Business Process Services handlers are always installed. Run the installer on each host where a component of Business Process Services must be installed. After you complete installing the software, see Chapter 6, Manually Configuring Process Integrator for information about modifying the Business Process Services configuration file. To install legacy BPS functionality: 1. Log in to the target host as the installation owner. The installation owner is the user whose account is used to install the software. If you are installing the HTTP listener, the JMS listener, or a remote message processor, log in as the Tomcat or WebLogic installation owner. 2. Download the Business Process Services software: Business_Process_ Services_ _aix.tar, Business_Process_Services_ _solaris.tar, or Business_Process_Services_ _windows.zip, and uncompress it into a temporary folder. You should have received instructions through regarding how to download products from Documentum s download site. The URL below takes you to the download site login page. If you cannot locate your password, use the password finder at the bottom of the page. Your user name is your address. Download Site: 3. 31 Manually Configuring Process Integrator Chapter 6 This chapter explains how to set parameters in the XML configuration file installed with Process Integrator to control how Process Integrator software components route and process messages. The configuration settings relate to inbound messaging. No configuration is required for outbound messaging. The chapter contains the following main sections: About configuration files, page 31 Configuring message processors, page 32 Configuring repository connections, page 33 Configuring message handlers, page 35 Configuring message filters, page 36 Configuring JMS listeners, page 39 Enabling non SSL communications, page 40 Creating aliases for connections and handlers, page 40 About configuration files Each machine with Process Integrator listeners installed on it has a configuration file that specifies how it handles incoming messages. No configuration is required for outbound messaging. Configuration file settings control: Which message processors the listener uses to process incoming messages Which message handlers are available to its local message processor Which Documentum repositories it can log into Which queues and topics the JMS listener attaches to Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 31
Manually Configuring Process Integrator Whether the HTTP listener and message processor accept messages posted to it without SSL The configuration file resides in the following directory: DOCUMENTUM/config/bps, where DOCUMENTUM is your Documentum user directory (C:\Documentum by default). The name of the files is config_name.xml, where config_name is the configuration name you entered when you installed the listener. The schema for configuration files, config.xsd, also resides in the /config/bps directory. When a Process Integrator listener receives a message, certain properties of the message identify the target Documentum repository and the message handler that incoming messages identify the name of a connection and a handler. The message processor looks in its configuration file for the details about the connection and handler. Configuring message processors When a Process Integrator listener receives a message, it passes the message to a message processor. The message processor, in turn, connects to a Documentum repository and invokes the appropriate message handler to process the message. The listener s configuration file specifies whether it uses its local message processor or forwards it to a message processor on a remote machine. Since the message handlers run on the same machine as the message processor that invokes them, you normally disable the local message processor for listeners that run on machines outside the firewall, replacing it with one or more remote message processors. The <processors> element in the configuration file specifies which message processors are available to the listener. The listener passes the message to the local message processor if it is active. If it is not active, or if it returns an error indicating that it cannot process the message, the listener steps through its list of remote processors. It sends the message to each in turn until one of them processes the message successfully. This approach provides a failover technique for message handling. When you install a Process Integrator listener, the listener Servlet also includes a local message processor. By default, the <processors> element of the configuration file includes an entry for the local message processor: <processors> <local name="default"/> </processors> If you do not want the listener to use its local message processor, remove the <local> element, but not the <processors> element. 32 Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide
Manually Configuring Process Integrator To add one or more remote message processors to the configuration file, add a <remote> element for each one inside of the <processors> element: <remote name="host_alias_name"> <url> </remote> where Host_alias_name is any arbitrary name used to refer to a host and application is the name of the web application that contains the Process Integrator listener Servlet. WebLogic refers to this as the web application. Tomcat refers to it as the virtual directory. If the element for the <local> message processor is still in place, the listener will use a remote processor only when the local message processor returns an error. If you remove the <local> element, the listener selects a remote message processor in every case. For example, this configuration file specifies that the listener should use its local message processor if it can, then use the remote message processor on the machine accelera.com if the local message processor fails: <processors> <local name="default"/> <remote name="faraway"> <url> inbound/remote</url> </remote> </processors> Configuring repository connections When a Process Integrator listener receives an incoming message, the message identifies the message handler to use for processing and the target Documentum repository (either directly or through an alias; see Creating aliases for connections and handlers, page 40). The message processor that handles a message must translate the connection name from the incoming message into an actual session with a Documentum repository. The <connections> element lists the valid connection names. For each name, there is a <docbase connection> element that provides the login information for a Documentum repository. More than one name can refer to the same repository, perhaps through using a different login account. The information in the <docbase connection> element corresponds directly to the information encapsulated by the IDfLoginInfo interface in DFC. <docbase connection name="connection"> <docbase name>docbase</docbase name> <user name>username</user name> <password>password</password> <domain>domain</domain> </docbase connection> Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 33
Manually Configuring Process Integrator where: connection is the name for the connection, which either appears as a property of an incoming message or results from resolving an alias that appears in the message (see Creating aliases for connections and handlers, page 40). docbase is the name of the Documentum repository to which the message processor connects. username is the Documentum user ID that the message processor uses to log in to the repository. password is the password for the Documentum user ID. domain is the domain against which to authenticate the user credentials, if required for log in. Note: Depending on your security needs, you may need to encrypt the passwords in the configuration files. Process Integrator installs a utility for password encryption in the directory DCTM_PROGRAM_DIR/bps/shared/bin. On Windows, the utility is encryptpass.bat On UNIX, the utility is encryptpass.sh When this command line utility runs, it prints a string that represents the encrypted password to the console. You can then copy and paste the string into the <password> element Process Integrator automatically encrypts the password in the default.xml after Process Integrator installation. Ensure that the encrypted password is prefixed with DM_ENCR_TEXT. The usage and syntax for the utility are identical to the usage and syntax for the dm_encrypt_password utility that is installed with Content Server. For information on usage and syntax, refer to Documentum Content Server Administration Guide. The following example of the <connections> element identifies two repository connections. Each incoming message will indicate which connection to use for processing that message by using the <docbase connection> name or an alias that resolves to that name. <connections> <docbase connection name="salesrepository"> <docbase name>salesrepo</docbase name> <user name>bpsmsg</user name> <password>bpsmsg_pass</password> <domain>corporate</domain> </docbase connection> <docbase connection name="support"> <docbase name>supportdb</docbase name> <user name>guest</user name> <password>guest</password> <domain>custnet</domain> </docbase connection> </connections> 34 Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide
Manually Configuring Process Integrator Configuring message handlers When a Process Integrator listener receives an incoming message, the message identifies the message handler to use for processing and the target Documentum repository (either directly or through an alias; see Creating aliases for connections and handlers, page 40). The message processor that handles a message must translate the message handler name from the incoming message into an actual BOF service to invoke. The <handlers> element lists the available message handlers and identifies the BOF service that corresponds to the handler. Each message handler is described with a <handler> element. In addition to giving the service name, the <handler> element can provide values for message handler parameters. The format is: <handler name="handler"> <service name>dbor_service_name</service name> <params> <param name="name" value="value"/> </params> </handler> where: handler is a name for the message handler, which either appears as a property of an incoming message or results from resolving an alias that appears in the message (see Creating aliases for connections and handlers, page 40). dbor_service_name is the name under which the handler service based object (SBO) is registered in the global registry. For Documentum sample handlers, this is com.documentum.bps.handlers.handlernameservice name is the name of a parameter of the message handler SBO. value is the value to pass for the parameter when invoking the SBO. The parameter names and values form (name, value) pairs that are passed to the handler in an IDfProperties object. The incoming message itself may also include properties that are passed to the message handler as parameters; see Addressing inbound messages to Process Integrator listeners, page 47 for more information. A configuration file can include any number of message handlers. Different aliases can refer to the same handler, enabling you to invoke the same BOF service using different parameter settings. For example, the following <handlers> element configures two handler names that invoke the same standard Documentum message handler with different parameter values: <handlers> <handler name="sales inquiry"> <service name>com.documentum.bps.handlers.linktofolderservice </service name> Business Process Services Activity Template Migration Guide 35
