Introduction To JAVA Programming Language JAVA is a programming language which is used in Android App Development. It is class based and object oriented programming whose syntax is influenced by C++. The primary goal of JAVA is to be simple, object-oriented, robust, secure and high level. NOTE: This course is for basic concept of Java in line with our existing Android project, which is a continuation of the Android and XML classes. First, let s look at the project structure created and maintained in Android studio for JAVA. The Java directory contains three main packages, the first is the java code for the application itself which contains a file called MainActivity.java, and the other two packages are the root packages for testing classes (A Java class file is a file containing Java bytecode that can be executed on the Java Virtual Machine. A Java class file is usually produced by a Java compiler from Java programming language source files containing Java classes). Below is an image to further explain the directory. 1 The image above explains the Java directory and the files in it. For the purpose of this we will be working with the MainActivity.java file.

2 Let s look deeper into the MainActivity.java class and get to understand the codes and what they do. A package is a namespace that organizes a set of related classes and interfaces. Packages are used in Java, in-order to avoid name conflicts and to control access of class, interface and enumeration etc. A package can be defined as a group of similar types of classes, interface, enumeration or subpackage. Using package it becomes easier to locate the related classes and it also provides a good structure for projects with hundreds of classes and other files.

import keyword is used to import built-in and user-defined packages into your java source file so that your class can refer to a class that is in another package by directly using its name. So in the image above we are importing the packages we need to make use of their corresponding classes. This is where the MainActivity class is declared. A Class can be defined as a template/ blueprint that describes the behaviour /state of an object. An Object is an instance of a class. public is a Java keyword which declares a member's access as public. Public members are visible to all other classes. This means that any other class can access a public field or method. When the MainActivity comes to the screen, the framework calls a series of what are known as life cycle methods. These are call back methods and they are marked with the override annotations. our MainActivity class contain three methods which are; oncreate, oncreateoptionsmenu and onoptionsitemselected 3 Let s review each method oncreate Method: this method is called automatically and the first and most important thing it does is to call a

method called setcontentview which references activity_main.xml layout file. Also there we created a button and we assigned a snackbar event to it (snackbar provide lightweight feedback about an operation. They show a brief message at the bottom of the screen on mobile and lower left on larger devices). 4 oncreateoptionsmenu and onoptionsitemselected methods: oncreateoptionsmenu is used to create a menu and the onoptionsitemselected is called whenever an item in your options menu is selected. void, onoptionsmenuclosed(menu). Let s run the app on our virtual device and notice some things in our app

Click on the message icon/button marked above. 5

Notice it shows the default Replace with your own action. Now let s replace this message with our message. To change the snackbar message. Return to the MainActivity.java file on Android Studio 6

7 # Change the Replace with your own action to Welcome to my Android app. Let s run the app again to confirm the change has taken effect in our app. Click from the menu icons and patiently wait for the virtual device to run.

Click the message icon/button 8

Notice that our change was successful. Let s click on the icon on the top right of the screen 9

10 It shows the setting menu When you click on the settings menu, notice that nothing is happening. Let s build a basic setting activity/menu where users can explore and express preferences for how the application behaves. Note: This is to build a basic settings activity to show some of the things we can do with setting. Navigate to the app menu on the left in Android studio Right click, then choose New, then Activity, then Settings Activity

It will show this page 11

12 Notice that the Hierarchical Parent is blank as shown above. Click the button highlighted above, and choose MainActivity

Click Ok 13

14 This means that MainActivity will be the parent of the Settings Activity and when users click back from the Settings they end up in the Main Acitivity. Click Finish It takes a moment to load and you will notice SettingsActivity and AppCompactPreferenceActivity have been added to our Java folder (The SettingsActivity.java extends the AppCompactPreferenceActivity.java class).

15 In other to complete our SettingsActivity setup, we will add an intent object to our MainActivity Let s navigate to our MainActivity.java file We will add an intent Object to our onoptionsitemselected method to be able to navigate to our SettingsActivity We will add some codes to the if statement

16 Type the following codes in the if statement block as shown in the image below Intent intent = new Intent (this, SettingsActivity.class); startactivity(intent); Explanation: Intent in Android is a package of instruction to the framework. Here we are using it to include SettingsActivity class as an activity. So we created an Intent Object and we gave it a name of intent (notice that the class start with uppercase I while the object name starts with lowercase I ) Then we instantiate the Intent object by passing two arguments (the context - this and a java class definition - SettingsActivity). Finally, we start the activity by calling a method named StartActivity and pass in the intent object. Let s run the application again Click from the menu icons and wait for the app to run on our virtual device Click on the icon on the top right of the screen

Click Settings 17

It shows our Setting Activity/menu 18

We can explore each item on the menu to see options that are available. If you click on General, you ll see this 19

20 If you click on Notifications you ll see this The goal is to show you all the different kind of preferences we can use in our application. Congratulations we have come to the end of the class. Thank you for participating.
