1 Course: Honors AP Computer Science Instructor: Mr. Jason A. Townsend Course Description: The material for this course is the equivalent of one to two semesters of an entry level college program. The emphasis is on programming methodology, algorithms, and data structures. Object Oriented Programming will be introduced early and used often. This course will prepare students to take the AP Computer Science exam at the end of the year. The prerequisite for the course is a C or higher in Geometry A / Honors Geometry, or permission of the instructor. Materials Textbook: Fundamentals of Java, Comprehensive Edition, Lambert, Osborne. Software: BlueJ compiler in the PC windows environment. Notes can be taken on paper or in a Word document. Pens/Pencils should be brought to class. Portable storage devices are not required, but can be very helpful. Grading Each unit will consist of the following: Written quiz Written test Short and long term programming assignments A few short written assignments Grades will be based on total points using the following scale: H A B C D F 0 59 Grades of.5 and higher will automatically be rounded up. A written final will be given at the end of first semester. The second semester final may be replaced by the AP exam or an in class project.

2 Student Expectations -Keep a detailed set of notes. -Ask questions and participate in class discussions. -Make attendance a priority. -Be in class on time everyday. -Respect the equipment in the computer lab. ( see computer usage agreement ) -Challenge yourself and THINK! This is an honors class. You are expected to be creative and push yourself beyond your comfort level. Class time will be given to work on programming assignments, but students are encouraged to use the lab outside of class and to work independently at home. Reading the textbook is not suggested, it is required. This is an AP course. The AP exam may be taken in May for college credit. All students are encouraged to sign up for one of these exams, but they are not required for credit in this course. Make up quizzes and exams will be given in the event of an excused absence. Make ups will be given before school or after school on Tuesday only. From November to February additional days after school will be offered. No make ups will be given during the school day. Attendance Policy In the event of an excused absence, students may make up any missed homework, quizzes, and tests. Students will have one week from the day of return to complete any missed items. Example: if a student returns on a Tuesday, they have until the end of the day the following Monday to make up any items. Exceptions will only be made in the event of an absence of more than three consecutive days. Anything not made up in the given time frame will be counted as a zero. Any assignments, quizzes, or tests missed due to an unexcused absence will also be counted as zeros. Classroom Guidelines You will come to class on time. Two tardies per semester will be excused. On the third and any subsequent infractions, there will be consequences at the discretion of the instructor. Other than a calculator, no electronic devices should be seen or heard in the classroom. All phones, headphones and games should be put away before entering the room. Any violations of this policy will result in the loss of the item until the end of the day. Repeat offenses will require a parent to retrieve the item. The classroom is a professional learning environment, students should dress accordingly. All school dress code guidelines will be strictly followed. Students who cannot abide by these regulations will not be admitted to class.

3 AP Computer Science Computer Lab Usage Agreement For the course we will be using two pieces of software on a daily basis. BlueJ Microsoft Word Students will save all work within their k drive folder on the server. Back up work can be saved on portable flash drives. At no time will the student open any applications other than the above listed software without explicit consent of the instructor. This includes, but is not limited to Microsoft Explorer or any other web browser. Additionally, students will not download any non Word or BlueJ files from any external sources. Students will also refrain from opening any folders or files which are not their creation. Any attempts to access or circumvent district information or computer options will be a violation of this policy. All students will be responsible for taking care of the lab equipment. Infractions of this policy will result in the following steps: Student will be removed from server interaction for one week Students will lose computer access in the class for one week Students will be dropped from the class I have read the above information and agree to the policies of this class Student Signature Parent Signature Date
